Lyrics:
I was staring at the sky, just looking for a star
To pray on, or wish on, or something like that
I was having a sweet fix of a daydream of a boy
Whose reality I knew, was a hopeless to be had
But then the dove of hope began its downward slope
And I believed for a moment that my chances
Were approaching to be grabbed
But as it came down near, so did a weary tear
I thought it was a bird, but it was just a paper bag
Hunger hurts, and I want him so bad, oh it kills
'Cause I know I'm a mess he don't wanna clean up
I got to fold 'cause these hands are too shaky to hold
Hunger hurts, but starving works, when it costs too much to love

@@warhammer1 I’ll b honest I just said prove it to say it lol, but I feel there is this idea that pop has to be things that are in the mainstream or have tropes of that that has been in the mainstream when there’s hyper pop and fusion like p4rkr or (if ur into it) 100 gecs and especially Charlie xcx. I don’t listen to Fiona Apple like that, I just listened to her for the first time when I wrote that comment, but she has aspects to her sound that have mainstream appeal that u could say is pop like. Especially compared to what is looked at as modern pop.

To the user who commented that she believed this song was promoting anorexia, the lyrics are not literal. Her hunger is referring to an infatuation she has for a man that she has clearly idealized and put on a pedestal without fully knowing who he really was, "just a little boy". She is hurt by this realization and although she loves him and is still longing for him, she knows he will hurt her if she is with him. This is why she says "hunger hurts, but starving works, when it costs too much to love". She must starve herself from the love she desperately wants from the person because she knows she will be hurt in the end. I've felt this and it's genuinely miserable. This whole song has such hopeful and empowering sound, and this video is so playful and whimsical, it's hard to believe that the message of heartache and longing is able to be conveyed so clearly. So beautiful. :'-)

No her lyrics were entirely literal she developed an eating disorder after she got raped and she was around 12 or 13 outside of the Dakota apartments where she lived. She starved herself to be less attractive because an evil guy and she in her own words wanted to get rid of the bait, it's a sad and terrible thing.
@Jake-io1vu
@Jake-io1vu 5 жыл бұрын
You're all right. The lyrics have an element of truth because she has struggled (still struggles?) with anorexia, and she used that experience in her writing to convey struggles in love, too. I don't think the song is PROMOTING anorexia, either way; she taps into that experience, but I don't think she's proud of it or suggesting that anyone else do it.

I'm a big fan of PTA's films and it's come to light that he was abusive in his relationship with Fiona. I figured this album was around when things might have wrapped up, so I'm surprised he was directing the music video(s) when this could very easily be written about, or inspired by him/his actions.

I saw this as one who was pretending to leave with her for one last little dance, and acting like he'd hold her baggage, but was really just like the rest and wasn't willing to give that life up and leave with her to a new place. Almost like the last of his kind on the way out that got close, but still wasn't willing to take on HER baggage and move on with her. Something like a long term relationship that ended, which in retrospect is painted almost as a ruse (which probably isn't fair to the other party). It's an interesting scene, since he's not giving her any baggage at all, he's supposed to just carry and accept hers. Maybe he's not a child, perhaps he just didn't think she was worth the burdens which she brought into his life.

"Hunger hurts but starving works when it costs too much to love." I think this means that yeah sure loneliness can be painful but if being with someone requires you to give up too much of who you truly are, then it's better to wallow in the pain of loneliness rather than sacrifice too much of yourself.

I'm one of the boys here. at 2:42 then 2:50. We had two or three weeks (not really sure anymore) dance training with PTA before we shoot this around 2pm. I was a small boy with a larger suit. Luckily, it didn't look bad on video and in fact, I looked taller. Didn't know PTA and Fiona were together that time and my mom pulled me out of the location right after we did the video. It was fun and also tiring at the same time. I can still remember some dance steps though, just the easy ones lol

"I'm a mess that he don't want to clean up". By the age of 25, I was CONVINCED that I was unlovable (based on my depression and past history) and I'd be a spinster for the rest of my life. At 27, I met the man of my dreams and someone that I don't deserve (after 17 years of marriage). We married and had kids. I'm still a mess (at almost 45 years old) and will always be, but the right person will see that you're worth the trouble. And so are they. We all can be ugly and we all have demons we battle (God knows I have mine), but you have to believe that you are worth it. What you bring to the table counts. Never settle.

This song spoke so much to me when I was in high school and I used to cry to it and pity myself all the time....I was so in love with a guy who was my best friend and I thought he liked me too. I was afraid to tell him and get rejected so I never did, he got a girlfriend when we were 16 and it broke my heart. I didn't know what to do with myself. He fell in love with her and tossed me aside so it wouldn't upset her. It crushed me. Fiona really grasped my upset and anger towards him in this song and many others she sang, her albums were the soundtrack to my heartache for a couple of years. Now I can look back and laugh at how much the first heartache seems like the end of the world when it isn't. Thank you Fiona

Can remember learning about how my first serious boyfriend had cheated and literally raised fist and shook it and that Sky and Wailed So Loud and for So long that people from over a mile away had heard it and called 911 along with 27 others that day! And it was in a neighborhood where it was far from common. Then I felt my knees grow weak and legs crumpled underneath my body like so much wadded up used tissue paper. Had to be carried to the couch where laid for the next 80 odd hours before even got up for a restroom break and to get something to drink. And after all of those overwhelming feelings of being unable to fathom continuing on in the Sham of a future he'd robbed us of and it seems so ridiculous and hard to even accept that it really happened the women are today. Can even laugh about it now and what a little shit head he was back at aged 17 he thought he was God's gift to the young ladies in our immediate area of the state anyhow. Lol

My heart was broken several times when I was a young man. Most severely in 2004, when I was a bit older than you are now. I gave up on love, moved on. The hurt stayed with me and shaped me as a person I'm sure but eventually it did fade and I forgot about love and found happiness in other things. Then I fell in love again in 2015 and felt just like I did as a teenager. That relationship imploded quickly and I've been a complete mess ever since, worse, or at least longer, than I ever was as an adolescent or 20-something.

Honestly this song is really resonating with me right now. Hunger hurts but starving works when it costs too much to love. Basically if you give a lot of yourself and the other person does not return the same love then it costs too much to love. Basically love should build you up because both people are contributing to it. Also I like the line where she says I thought he was a man but he was just a little boy. I also can relate to feeling like a mess someone does not wanna clean up. Fiona Apple´ś lyrics are so good. I haven´t listened to this since high school!! But in high school I used to listen to this album and another one on repeat.

[Verse 1] I was staring at the sky, just looking for a star To pray on, or wish on, or something like that I was having a sweet fix of a daydream of a boy Whose reality I knew, was a-hopeless to be had But then the dove of hope began its downward slope And I believed for a moment that my chances Were approaching to be grabbed But as it came down near, so did a weary tear I thought it was a bird, but it was just a paper bag [Chorus] Hunger hurts, and I want him so bad, oh it kills 'Cause I know I'm a mess he don't wanna clean up I got to fold cause these hands are too shaky to hold Hunger hurts, but starving works, when it costs too much to love [Verse 2] And I went crazy again today Looking for a strand to climb, looking for a little hope Baby said he couldn't stay Wouldn't put his lips to mine and a fail to kiss is a fail to cope I said, "Honey, I don't feel so good, don't feel justified Come on put a little love here in my void," He said "It's all in your head," And I said, "So's everything" but he didn't get it I thought he was a man but he was just a little boy [Chorus] Hunger hurts, and I want him so bad, oh it kills 'Cause I know I'm a mess he don't wanna clean up I got to fold cause these hands are too shaky to hold Hunger hurts, but starving works When it costs too much to love Hunger hurts but I want him so bad, oh it kills 'Cause I know I'm a mess that he don't wanna clean up I got to fold because these hands are just too shaky to hold Hunger hurts, but starving works me When it costs too much to love Oh, hunger hurts but I want him so bad, oh it kills 'Cause I know I'm a mess that he don't wanna clean up I got to fold because these hands are just too shaky to hold Hunger hurts, but starving, it works When it costs too much to love, hmm hmm

Then I reflect on how I've intruded and been intruded upon and get way too sad. I just want to feel everything and all the birds I see are just paper bags and my hands can't be held. Too shaky. My parents used to play this song all the time when I was a kid and for the last couple weeks I’ve been listening to her on repeat. Or just an easy Sunday afternoon with my dad playing music videos on KZbin.

tamcon72 I think putting boys in grow men suits is a metaphor for mens emotional immaturity. The dancing is all the games and rituals she has to go through with men. All this dancing around and then just as she's ready for a relationship, they all just hurry off suddenly disinterested. Then at the end one last hope. The suitcase is her "baggage" but this time she wisely decides to carry it herself. Nice video and the metaphors are good albeit obvious.

It’s insane how Paul Thomas Anderson pretty much inspired all the lyrics to this album, bringing her immense pain, was smart enough to know it and portray it beautifully in all the music videos he directed, was kind enough to say beautiful stuff about her, and then went around to abusing her and forcing their relationship to die. I’m sure she didn’t help, but he sounded like a real jerk in both the lyrics and the things she would say about him later on. The only song I can think of that isn’t about him is probably Love Ridden.
