Now won't you listen honey, while I say How could you tell me that you're goin’ away Don't say that we must part Don't break my achin’ heart You know I've loved you truly many years I’ve loved you night and day How could you tell it to me honey can’t you see my tears Now listen while I say After you've gone and left me crying After you've gone there's no denying You’ll feel blue, you’ll feel sad You’ll miss the bestest pal you ever had There'll come a time, now don't forget it There'll come a time when you'll regret it Someday when you’ve grown lonely Your heart will break like mine and you’ll want me only After you've gone, after you've gone away After you’ve gone, after the breakup After you’ve gone, you are gonna wake up And you will find that you were blind To let somebody come and change your mind After the years that we’ve been together The joy and all the tears in all types of weather Someday when you’re downhearted You’ll long to be with me right back where we started After you've gone, after you've gone away [piano] Oh babe, think what you’re doin’ You know my love for you will drive me to ruin After you've gone, after you've gone away

...and for comparison the original lyrics: Now won't you listen honey, while I say How could you tell me that you're going away Don't say that we must part Don't break *your baby's heart* You know I've loved you for these many years Loved you night and day Oh honey baby can you see my dear Listen while I say After you've gone, and left me crying After you've gone, there's no denying You'll feel blue, You'll feel bad You'll miss the *only* pal you ever had There'll come a time, *well* don't forget it There'll come a time when you'll regret it Oh babe, think what you're doing You know my love for you will drive me to ruin After you've gone, after you've gone away After you've gone and left me crying After you've gone, there's no denying You'll feel blue You'll feel sad You'll miss the only pal you ever had There'll come a time, well don't forget it There'll come a time, when you'll regret it Oh babe think what you're doing You know my love for you will drive me to ruin After you've gone, after you've gone away

Lots of people report that they've been inspired by her and emulate her. Even Kanye West. And that's to their credit, right? It's what we should do when we find someone great.

That's the version that made me fall in love with this old old classic. Didn't know it really until I heard your version many years ago. So happy to have it in somewhat better audio quality than before.

The Bioshock version is my favourite. I wish they'd release the version without the old record player distortions added.

I really wish this existed as something more than someone's old cellphone or handheld camera footage. There is even a professional camera there. To think the higher quality video of this is just languishing somewhere makes me sad.

In a reply to my lyrics above, FAR gives the exact lyrics of Marion Harris’ original recording of the 1918 Creamer & Layton song. I tried to look into whether FA took her lyrics from somebody else in particular. There have been many variations over the years. I found two versions of the original sheet music, each copyrighted in 1918. One can be found at sheetmusicsinger, the other at digitalcommons. There’s an extra verse, more or less the same in each version of the sheet music, missing from Harris’ recording. FA’s performance has a completely different extra verse, close to what Ella Fitzgerald sang in 1962 (I can’t find anything like it earlier). Before the extra verse, one version of the sheet music matches Harris exactly except it has “dearest pal” where she has “only pal.” The other version is much closer to FA’s performance (but not Ella’s), including “my aching heart” and “bestest pal.” My guess is that the sheet music version that is closer to the popular recording by Harris was the later of the two. If that’s right, then (before the extra verse) FA is closer to the original than Harris was!

Now she is weird, but a supremely talented chanteuse...ooze , but like ze two ziz, lol. That is an incredible version that goes from the lovely, traditional classic , to the repressed/summoned rage lines, and then back to traditional with elements of rage, much like the women in my life often did. She sold the song one way, bought it back, and sold a different way. Those are my acid observations..Lovely standard
