I was his student in Allahabad University for 2 years. He was different from other teachers and he taught us everything except what was there in our course books. Although he was our teacher of English Literature, he seldom spoke English in the classroom. He treated us like his junior friends and we never realised that he's such a great poet, because he seldom talked about his poetry in Urdu. I could learn about his greatness when he earned the Gyanpeeth Award in Literature. I could realise his greatness when I heard Iqbal Bano (famous Pakistani singer) sing his Gazal in New Delhi sometime around 1991. The Gazal was "Shaam e Firaaq Ab Na Pooch". It was a great privilege to be his student. It was also great to hear Iqbal Bano.

Firaq was a great son of a great subcontinent, India. In November 1984, on the news of the death of Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Firaq opined that now it will take people half a century to understand Faiz. I wrote his remarks on the book, Nelson Pediatrics, lying in front of me on my office table in Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi Medical College, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. I was Professor of Pediatrics.
