The problem with bjj is that coaches just show positions and the students are left to figure out the basics by themselves, which can take a fucking long time. John Danaher changed that by using his academic mind to create a new way of teaching bjj. He systematized the sport/art and teaches it in depth and divided by topics, like a college curriculum.
@sanansa45673 жыл бұрын
But if you don't live in that area (New York CIty), wouldn't it be faster/cheaper to hire an advanced BJJ practitioner to teach you 1 on 1 to learn the basics?

@adamkhan44513 жыл бұрын
It has to do with time as well. If you you are a purple belt for 6 months and get promoted to brown np matter how good you are that's too fast. Some teachers do it, but for john to say let him do his time as a purple and keep improving don't skip the belt just because he's good. 1 yr as a purple belt is short. Its supposed to be like 3.
@cthulhu-jitsu74043 жыл бұрын
@@adamkhan4451 isn't that a bit at odds with giving Travis Stevens a black belt in 18 months? And for that matter, Danaher himself says he values technical ability and performance in sparring as his number one criteria. I think beating 5 high level black belts should definitely qualify.
@blakesimons93783 жыл бұрын

@cthulhu-jitsu74043 жыл бұрын
@@blakesimons9378 I'm aware of this, but it wasn't simply black belts from another school. Coach Zahabi stated clearly that these were internationally ranked black belts. @blakesimons93783 жыл бұрын
Cthulhu-Jitsu personally if that’s Zahabi’s criteria for a level up then he should’ve still given him the belt and not worry about what another coach thinks, have some security in your system. Surprised not enough people are saying the Gracie University in Torrance, CA. The way the classes are organized and structured makes it the best learning experience for any beginner. You’re not just learning the position, you’re learning the basics/techniques to apply a good foundation when you start, Rener and Ryron’s ability to breakdown everything to the T is very effective for all belt levels

Now that danaher death squad has moved to Puerto Rico, is RGA still the best school in the world?
@DagmarSLNY3 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to comment on the position that it is the "best in the world" but the standards of RGA have always been high. Matt Serra was Renzo's first US black belt and when he sent him down to Gracie Barra in RD n Brazil, as a purple belt the instructors there called him asking who the hell he was because the black belts there were having a difficult time sparring with him and John was only a blue belt at the time. There are plenty of black belts and brown belts there that have trained under Danaher that follow his teaching philosophy and methodology. The old guard of the DDS did not move with Ryan and John. It's basically Nicky, Garry and Craig. I also don't see most of them staying at the PR academy for more than a few years. John is in his mid fifties so he may retire there but Gordon is the main impetus for the move for income tax reasons and is transitioning to MMA. It's just as likely as not that the rest will move on to their own academies after a few years with the exception of Nicky, but even that's not guaranteed as he may come into his own as an adult and not want to stay rooted in PR.

Talking about two different things sport and sub only. The best sport BJJ school's a Gracie Barra, GFTeam , Checkmat/Alliance respectfully. The best academy that caters to Nogi/Combat/Submission Jiu Jitsu which is a very niche/small group of individuals would be IMO. 10th planet, Renzo Gracie , INSERT MMA Academy here Respectfully. The two have to be distinguished. You cannot have one without the other!
