@@Carlos-fh8wk You don't know that. My only point is that it doesn't take a national wrestling champion to be as accomplished as he is. The problem with bjj is that coaches just show positions and the students are left to figure out the basics by themselves, which can take a fucking long time. John Danaher changed that by using his academic mind to create a new way of teaching bjj. He systematized the sport/art and teaches it in depth and divided by topics, like a college curriculum.
@sanansa4567
@sanansa4567 3 жыл бұрын
But if you don't live in that area (New York CIty), wouldn't it be faster/cheaper to hire an advanced BJJ practitioner to teach you 1 on 1 to learn the basics?

yeah from the amount of champions yes, but renzo has a more effecient system, ryan won adcc with less than 7 years of training, eddie cumming who started bjj at 26/27 was submitting blackbelts and going at it with tanquinho with only 4-5years of training, and others like nicky ryan, taza etc are competing and going at it with high level blackbelts with +10 years of training, so in terms of the quality of instruction, Renzo is the place to go

Correct if competitions equals best Jiu jitsu. There are many many skilled Jiu jitsu masters who don’t compete, but if you roll with them, you couldn’t submit them almost ever. Perfect example Ryron Gracie at metamoris 20 minute no points sub only against Atmos Champ. Best “BJJ” school doesn’t equal most competition athletes.

Having purple belts submitting black belts at competitions is just sandbagging. I compete in the NYC area and RCA is just known for sandbagging, they don't promote their students. There are a lot of schools like that where the owner brags " my blue belt can kill your brown belts" and then the blue belt has a black belt in judo and has been doing BJJ for 7 years, the funny thing is I know a blue belt who has a Judo black belt and has been training for 7 years lol

@@raymondr2821 That's the point, none are. It's the very definition of BJJ that "freakish athleticism" is not going to win you matches. A purple belt subs 5 high class black belts and shouldn't be promoted because he's "not good enough"? Don't most people get called out for sandbagging for that?
@adamkhan4451

It has to do with time as well. If you you are a purple belt for 6 months and get promoted to brown np matter how good you are that's too fast. Some teachers do it, but for john to say let him do his time as a purple and keep improving don't skip the belt just because he's good. 1 yr as a purple belt is short. Its supposed to be like 3.
@cthulhu-jitsu7404
@cthulhu-jitsu7404 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamkhan4451 isn't that a bit at odds with giving Travis Stevens a black belt in 18 months? And for that matter, Danaher himself says he values technical ability and performance in sparring as his number one criteria. I think beating 5 high level black belts should definitely qualify.

Cthulhu-Jitsu a high Black in one gym is a purple in another. You need to match what is in your gym. That’s what makes BJJ unique.

@@blakesimons9378 I'm aware of this, but it wasn't simply black belts from another school. Coach Zahabi stated clearly that these were internationally ranked black belts. I believe he even made a point not to mention their names to avoid embarrassing them. Again, this would be sandbagging if anyone else had done it, and I seriously doubt we'd be defending anyone else the way Danaher is being defended here.
@blakesimons9378

Cthulhu-Jitsu personally if that’s Zahabi’s criteria for a level up then he should’ve still given him the belt and not worry about what another coach thinks, have some security in your system. And my thoughts are, if people don’t like Danaher’s style or promotion system, then leave! Go to another gym where you will get promoted at the pace you want. But, while the belt color may go up, the quality will go down

Now that danaher death squad has moved to Puerto Rico, is RGA still the best school in the world?
@DagmarSLNY
@DagmarSLNY 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to comment on the position that it is the "best in the world" but the standards of RGA have always been high. Matt Serra was Renzo's first US black belt and when he sent him down to Gracie Barra in RD n Brazil, as a purple belt the instructors there called him asking who the hell he was because the black belts there were having a difficult time sparring with him and John was only a blue belt at the time. There are plenty of black belts and brown belts there that have trained under Danaher that follow his teaching philosophy and methodology. The old guard of the DDS did not move with Ryan and John. It's basically Nicky, Garry and Craig. I also don't see most of them staying at the PR academy for more than a few years. John is in his mid fifties so he may retire there but Gordon is the main impetus for the move for income tax reasons and is transitioning to MMA. It's just as likely as not that the rest will move on to their own academies after a few years with the exception of Nicky, but even that's not guaranteed as he may come into his own as an adult and not want to stay rooted in PR.
