I remember several of the old Federal Vibratone 450s (early version) at my second elementary school sounding similar to the Vibratone horn/strobe at 5:12, but on Continuous. It was an old Gamewell FlexAlarm system from 1971.

Electromechanical horns are really better notification appliances than the high-pitched coach whistle sounding alarms. The deeper tone travels further, and they don't need to be quite as loud to be as noticeable. Too bad they tend to go bad like that. This 500Hz tone stuff looks promising though.

Quite the wide variety of alarms there. Schools I have been in had trualerts, spectralert classics, and now voice evac at my high school. Sadly I haven't experienced the older horns in person. I honestly like watching you go around testing various systems, good job.

My elementary school (that I attended in the late 80’s) had Faraday Vibratones and they were LOUD!! I lived almost half a mile away and could hear them from my house! Luckily none of the classrooms had them, they were all out in the hallways. But you could feel them through the floor and definitely through the cinder block walls!

The Vibratone at 5:18 seems to be defective. Not good. Needs to be fixed! Probably the horn has the pitch adjusting screw tight bc it sounds like the sounder plate can't vibrate freely, so it makes a hissing type of sound, and then snaps.

kfc28371ify it's something the fire fighters use as well. It mimics smoke so the detector will go off because it smells what it thinks is smoke.

kfc28371ify The device holds a can of artificial smoke which is literally a compressed alcohol based concentration. By me placing the bowl around the base of the detector it sprays the mix into the sensor. The photoelectric eye sees the particulate and registers it as smoke.

Dave You can apply online at many places depending on what areas have openings. College/technical experience is a plus. Will eventually need to be NICET certified plus have a current fire alarm license in the state in which you work if they require it. Some do not all.
