If it's a broken gas main its safer to let it burn and try to protect the surrounding property until the gas can be turned off

I don’t think they were trying to put the fire out. They were spaying water on the building and other exposed objects to keep them from having more damage as the gas is turned off.

@@hermanvankampen6047 I specifically said the fire brigade was NOT trying to put out the fire but were putting water on exposures to prevent further damage to the building and prevent damage to exposures that can be set on fire by radiant heat or damaged by the heat. I have seen a natural gas leak burn with a meter of flood waters on it.

@@enid0mom And so I added that the fire itself can only be extinguished by shutting off the gas pipeline from 2 sides by the gas company. These press, as it were, 2 "balloons" in the pipe, which close off the pipe. Gas is supplied from 2 sides through a pipe.

Strange how people are always complaining about how long it takes to attend fires but never put their brain into focus what could be the reason why . Maybe fire appliances from this area were on another shout and additional support had to be brought in from surrounding areas .If the traffic is anything like the UK ,the attendance times for these appliances would be longer .And with cutbacks in this country happening all the time our Brigades are facing the same problems even now with increased attendance times due to the lack of personnel and appliances.

You cant magically close a gas valve, even so the firedepartment has no tools to do this (they dont even know where the shuttoffs are located). To close the valves the company who owns the gaslines has to join in on the action. Considering its a small gas line (300mbar) closing it off should be fairly easy, if it is a distribtion line (which is what it looks like) closing it of isnt so easy because the distance between shutoff points is fairly large.

Even if the one burst gas line is so the from the fire who is still very slow With us there are at least 10 hoses in use and what I see so 1 to a maximum of 2 tired strale of water ? Honestly, that's not how you extinguish gas fires. I have already had the fire after 20 min and the gas turned off a few moments later
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 8 ай бұрын
You must be joking: you don't extinguish a fire in a gas mains... You only protect the surroundings if surrounding structures are at risk. Extinguishing a gas mains fire is just impossible as it will continue to burn as long as there is gas in the pipes. The first truck is at scene around 5:30: the siren can be heard before and stops. The fact there's not a huge amount of water being dumped on it most likely has to do with the building: they want to be absolutely sure it's clear inside: as you can see, the window frames at some point catch fire as well. If the windows burst (and I admire how well those windows put up), you've got a rapidly expanding problem and since quite a lot of the historical inner center of Amsterdam has structures that contain a lot of wood, they want to make absolutely sure their actions won't make it far worse. It could also be the first attack was already present inside the building way before we could see evidence of it.

In Britain the rules are on scene in 8 minutes for life threatening emergencies, but the reality is that you would be lucky in a big city if more than one unit arrived within 15 minutes. And it can be a lot longer, even in a big city: if you call for an emergency ambulance for a serious but not immediately life-threatening injury (such as a broken bone or dislocation) it's not unusual to be told that you will have to wait 2 hours or even more.

@@Doc_Rainbow It's worth remembering that the BBC series cherry-picks things which makes the ambulance service look good, you can be sure that the ambulance service themselves are sending the crews-with-TV-people on 'media positive' calls, and I can absolutely guarantee you that those who are calling for a "little chat" wouldn't normally get anything other than a call-back by phone and possibly a referral to their GP (family doctor). Or if an ambulance was despatched, it would be days later - given that they're happily filming calls where the patient has been waiting 12 hours for an ambulance, you can bet that normally those calls would have just been allowed to fade away.
