Spend some time with instructor Jim Miller learning the story of two geological events that created the dramatic rocky landscape of Minnesota's North Shore. One tells the tale of red hot lava flows that spilled out onto a barren landscape over one billion years ago, and the other is the story of mile-thick sheets of ice that carved out the great basin of Lake Superior over the past two million years.

Very interesting. I knew there is a healed rift, but I didn't know even a quarter of the story. I'm a huge geology buff, with emphasis of marine geology and plate tectonics. Thank you so much for posting this.

A great lecture marred only by technical difficulty with the sound. Would love to hear it over again with great sound. Will I have to throw out my old 1994 book, "Geology of the Lake Superior Region"? Also it would be wonderful to know if there are any geologic reference phone apps when hiking in complex geologic terrain.

Is the rift the reason for the laurentian divide? I grew up there and always wondered how the divide formed.

Dear Mr Miller, Everybody loves a good puzzle, including myself. I also like a good lecture and I very much appreciate all of the field work that's been done. It makes solving a puzzle a lot easier but what doesn't help is whenever somebody claims a theory like tectonics is a paradigm. Its nothing but a crutch. A copout. A bag of verbs and condescending answers to avoid a real explanation, Alfred Wegener matching up the flanks of the Atlantic was the job of a five-year-old. building a theory on just those two shorelines well that was downright Reckless and lazy and for everybody to just accept it is quite scary. Anybody who took a geology class and paid good money to learn tectonics should demand a refund I'm here to blow it out of the water with empirical evidence you see Alfred Wegener dropped the ball and there's no stopping me I'm already in the other end zone
