Sherry Fillmore.......Also, something called "Flame Tamers". They are round discs that are made from 2 pieces of metal on top of each other with an air space inbetween that were used years ago on gas stoves under pots to keep the flame from getting the pot too hot and burning the contents. I have 2 of them from my grandmother's house that she used to use and I still use occasionally! God Bless!

Was also going to suggest a multipurpose ceiling pulley system off which laundry could be hung (up high or low) and/or pots hung above stove. Especially for a constant stock or warm water pot.

@@LLjean-qz7sb Oh yes, I remember those flame diverters, as we used to call them in The Netherlands. Very handy, and in different sizes. When I grew up we cooked on gas, using them all of the time. My present home doesn't offer gas cooking, unfortunately, for a flame under the pan is what I far more prefer than electric cooking. I'm sure these flame diverters are still for sale in bric a brack recycling centers, and that sort of trade. There must be plenty of those, for they last a long time, all made of iron. Also, I think that those ceramic terracotta saucers used under plant-pots, can be used, when placed on top of each other, with airspace in between. Although there's always a risk of cracking when they're getting very hot, or in a sudden change of temperature. These terracotta plant-pots are used by people in Britain, who can't pay their heating-bill. These pots are placed over a low flame on the gas stove, keeping the kitchen warm. It's something, at least, not ideal when it freezes. There's much poverty in Britain, but no one talks about it openly.

I watched an off grid video where a man had a regular toilet installed in his place, he had a water container above the toilet to fill its low flow tank, and the sewer pipe went outside his place to a 2 ft by 2 ft concrete topless box he'd made. He kept it filled with compost. You'd flush as normal, it went into the box, he kept his covered with wood, and after several weeks of composting, he'd clean it and put the compost in a separate pile for a year. You could then use it like regular compost.

It's a nice stove! I think the stone fireplace would have a better ambience but the practicality of a stove outweighs the gains in appearance. Can't wait to see how much power you can generate! I was looking at average laptop power draw and it's much lower than I expected, so I imagine it won't need to be extravagant. Thanks for another great video!

You touched on this briefly, but it caught my attention. I always consider tv screens a black hole of death in a room in terms of ambience or distraction. In Hawaii we cover them with sarongs ☺️ to keep them from taunting us on a nice day. To solve this problem I have moved onto a projector and I would highly recommend one with with a movable/ retractable screen, so that the tv/ monitor screen doesn’t linger or taunt you when it’s mostly off. I am sure you won’t be needing a TV often, but it is nice to have an option for entertainment now and again.

Not sure that you will find much info on that stove online. The Flame Veiw stoves are made by the Margin Stove Ltd. Its a group of old order Amish located in Drayton Ontario. We used to sell them at our stove shop. If i remember correctly for start up up open the spin dampers on the ash pan doors and the slider on the face above the door and the slider damper at the back in the open position. Once the fire takes hold you close the spin dampers. If using a probe thermometer in the pipe run the stove up towards 5-600 degrees and then close the front damper half way. Once the stove starts to climb in temp close the rear slider damper. When you do this the smoke has to you down around the firebox and will re-combust giving you your secondary burn. From there you can close down the front air slider to control heat output and length of burn. Most people we sold those stoves to are happy with them and still using them, so i am sure you got a great deal on it. Hopefully you have all the chimney products already, as there is some wait times to get some things right now.

Shawn, could you create a small dam in the stream and incorporate a small turbine? That’s a really nice Wood-stove. My great grand parents had an old tin heater. Today, it seems archaic, but compared to a fireplace, it was the Cadillac of the time for peanuts of a price. Our first wood stove was a small pot belly one from the old CCC camps of the depression. We had to cut wood about 10” long and then all we had was a maul. Around 1979, we got a Fisher Papa bear replica kit and me and my Dad welded it up, got a foundry cast iron door, we thought we were in luxury then, lol. We could cut logs at least 2 feet long, it was boiler plate, it would hold a fire all night, and with fire bricks, it would last forever. Still have that stove and the one I made later when I built my house in 1987. We also got a log splitter, and graduated from a Poulan micro max chain saw to a powerful homelite then added a bow to it later. It’s funny, until you get something better, you don’t realize what was lacking in what you had. It was tough growing up like that but made us self sufficient and hard working. Today’s kids hav “NO CLUE”! I didn’t have it anywhere near as tough as my Dad, born in 1926, but looking back, that’s what made him so tough and self sufficient. Thanks for taking us along for the adventures, you’ve got a massive task on your hands with this cabin, but eventually you’ll have it done. Then we can watch you enjoy the fruits of you labor.

I'm glad that stove came at a good time to give you a right bit of cheer during your efforts. One of the greatest things mankind did was realize the need to use and control fire. It kept us alive through the winters, and allowed us to cook, which in turn increased our brain power and strength through better food intake. I got in an interesting discussion in these comments about how man differs from animals. I don't think any other animals use fire. This beauty of a stove will go a long way toward your comfort and well being even now. This will carry you through the darker part of the year. I'm sure Cali will appreciate a nap right next to it. During the Great Depression (nickname, 'the Dirty Thirties' on the Canadian Prairies), the cost of gas and maintenance was so expensive that people 'removed the engine, windows and sometimes framework and hooked up a horse to pull it' (info from Wikipedia). Richard Bennett was the Canadian Prime Minister from 1930 - 1935 and was blamed for the poverty in the country. In the USA they were called Hoover Carts or Hoover Wagons after President Hoover. For those who would like to know, Popular Mechanics produced a two part article on the subject of Hydro-electric power (on a small scale), I think in the late 1940's. Also the article was reproduced in two issues of "Mother Earth News" in the 1970's. What Shawn was describing is called 'head", ( a minimum of 6 vertical feet) to create the pressure needed to drive the water wheel, etc., to drive the generator. This is also necessary for using a hydraulic ram to pump water. When using a water wheel there is another thing that is involved and that is the flowing horse power of the stream itself, and other factors to obtain the power to generate electricity with water. There is a very involved formula and process to calculate the stream horse power. Search out these articles, they are very educational. That is a really nice stove too. -)
