As a person who lives real close to that refinery it was terrifying. We’ve had a fire there not that long ago but it looked like maybe a bit bigger than a normal flaring. The refinery put it out to the public as a normal flaring. We’ve had leaks there before as well. My family decided if anything else worse happens we would like to be as far away as possible. So right before the sirens went off we packed our bags and drove up to my grandmother’s house. Some updates the fire is now almost completely gone but the fire fighters are having trouble turning off the leak. The refinery came out and apologized for ruining peoples weekend but others are not satisfied with that and they are speaking out. We are a very small town who are proud to be living here and we feel the only downside to all of this is the fact the refinery is not the best kept as we see something much smaller than this every year.

Start asking the real questions. What refining units were/are affected? What chemicals are in those units? Is the refinery going to release the Material Safety Data Sheets for all of the chemicals that have been released and or burnt? Pretty sure that this is a Renewable Diesel site. They take vegetable oils and animal fats and turn them into a direct replacement for diesel from petroleum. About the list of concerning chemicals: - Likely there is acid involved, but this is true for a very large number of chemical processing units. - Coke is a byproduct of petroleum processing, and a very good chance that is produced here also. It is basically what is leftover after you remove all other useful materials from the oils. - Ammonia - not sure about that one. Never heard of that being used in a petroleum plant though

Funny how people much much younger than the refinery regret their decision to live next to it. There it is, by the freeway, other refineries, a busy shipping area adjacent to the old moth-ball fleet (now mostly gone), and wetlands full of mud and mosquitoes. It seems like an ideal neighbor to everyone except those who don't like the discounted price they got on their home nearby. It reminds me of the complaints I used to get that the noise at the drive-in movie was too loud from people who moved in next to us and the industrial parks, freeways (three of them; Hwy 4, 680, and 24 now 242), Buchanan Field airport, and Central San(itary). I mean, these all make sense together. The advantage to homes nearby is simply to get a lower cost. If the refinery wasn't there, the real estate with a gorgeous view of the wetlands, straight, and bridge would cause those homes to be torn down and rebuilt to look like waterfront homes in Berkeley or San Francisco. I can see one of the refineries from my porch in Pacheco, and at night it looks like a fairy castle. But I'm glad not to be too much closer, and I wish I couldn't hear two of the freeways. But the price was right, so I'm not complaining. I'm rather pleased for all the jobs refineries create, plus the fuels. I'd hate to have to pay tariffs to get them elsewhere. Everybody be careful out there, and try not to be lookie-loos on 680 or Hwy 4 as you go by. I hope the response teams are careful, too. And the neighbors. The responders and refinery workers have dangerous jobs, but they make our lives possible in so many ways.

Paid $6.19 per gallon for diesel as I drove back to neighboring state Nevada, where diesel is $3.35. I grew up near that area and was attending a funeral, where yet another old friend has died of cancer. Many, many cancer sufferers and survivors were at the funeral, including myself.

Years ago a richmond refinery caught fire. The firefighters were on the ball and put it out. They found after the fire hundreds of gallons or refined gasoline under a cracking tower that had to have been placed there to increase the damage.

Yeah, I grew up in the area, and was there yesterday attending the funeral of yet another friend who passed from cancer. This particular person was from a wealthy family, and her husband currently has cancer as well. Many attendees were cancer survivors, including myself. I know of a few who also currently have cancer. Many moms died in my neighborhood, when I was growing up in Rodeo. My aunt was a rancher who lived next to the coke plant on Hwy 4 and also died of cancer.
