Fun fact: speaking of bad marketing, Radiant Dawn was launched to the west a week before Mario Galaxy 1. Such a terrible time for a niche title to compete vs a major title.

The fanbase was divided for a long time as soon as Awakening released, because a lot of "casual" fans entered the series. There was a long period in time where fates and awakening were out but Echoes wasn't. Even when Echoes wasn't released, the fan base was sort of still at odds about the new mechanics and supports until Three Houses. There are probably still aspects about the new Fire Emblem games that "classic" fans hate (probably the avatar).

Personally it was the really good demo that got me into the series. as a kid who couldn't afford to get all the new releases, trying out all the demos in the Nintendo eshop was my main way of figuring out which games I really had to beg my parents to buy for me.

FE 9 and 10 had so much bad luck with its realease timing and for me those two are the best two games in the Franchise to date ( and if one has a copy he can even make money they are sold für around 300€ here) I just LOVE the Story in 9 and 10 that was Story Peak for FE even the new games dont come close.

Awakening is truly deserving of being called the savior of the franchise. FE12 was not a bad game and lacking an international release just hurt the series and was a poor decision. It did, however, built the foundations for Awakening to find its success where FE12 failed.

What hurt New Mystery was that it came out during the end of the DS’s lifecycle. Unless a game was going to sell well, Nintendo didn’t think it was worth localizing. Given that Fire Emblem was suffering from dwindling sales at the time, Nintendo didn’t think was worth localizing, but still allowed the game to release in Japan. Still sucks that it never came out to the West though.

I remember getting into FE thanks to both SSB Brawl & Ike, so then I got Awakening about a year after it came out. I'm so *GLAD* this was the entry that made me fall in love with this franchise. I put over 100 hours on my 1st save file. I understand why some people may be sick of hearing this line, and I know Awakening does have it's flaws, but I still feel like you have to admit that thanks to this game's success the franchise can give you more FE stuff you may or may not enjoy more in the future entries. If one single game can revive an almost dying franchise, I feel like you did *something right* here.

A lot of FE games before awakening were really really held back by sparse marketing, bad timing, etc. Even that idea of not releasing FE12 in the west that you mentioned. FE12 could very well have continues the upward trend from Shadow Dragon as the japanese sales were comparable. And from what I remember, the series wasn't 100% planned to end, it was more like "If this does worse than the last game then we end the series" which honestly seems inevitable with all the advantages awakening had, which is why I take issue with the whole "Awakening saved the franchise" thing that keeps getting repeated

Awakening was my introduction not just to fire emblem, but tactical strategy games in general. It’s certainly not my favorite, but it’s the most important one for me. These games have given me so much entertainment, and it’s all thanks to Awakening.

The Eshop demo is what had me sold on the game. I remember on launch day I went to several retailers to get a physical copy of the game, but everywhere I went they didn't have it. A quick google search and I found out they were having shipping issues. So I said fuck it and just bought it off Eshop that day. What is so amazing about this game is that they put everything into this game because they thought it was going to be the swan song of the series, little did they know it was going to be the phoenix of the series.

Imagine, proper advertising and marketing actually saved a franchise after a huge project with a bigger scope and larger development team flopped. Shadow Dragon was actually a fairly decent success as a back-to-basics approach with its smaller scope and development team, but it wasn't exactly enough to undo RD's damage and as such IS chose to focus on trying on selling better in their home market of Japan, hence the decision to not localize it (kinda similar to what Konami is currently doing atm afaik). It also sold decently in its home region but failed to meet the benchmark number they wanted, thus Awakening being set to be the final entry.

Awakening had created a lot of debate in the community even so I don't think the community has ever disagreed as much as it does today. Because of the bad reviews that Engage received even before its release for having a "light" scenario Many people have decided to just denigrate Engage I don't think the condition of the game can drop to this level once again just because of this But I can't contradict that with each opus I'm afraid that it will put us back in the same situation It was a very good video to remind me of those ptsd

Now question is whether FE will face another crisis in future or not. Probably no because we have FEH to pump money for the franchise but just thinking lol. Another question for FE is whether it will be developed by different companies. 3H has set an example and if the franchise is to expand and make more games at the same time probably more companies will be involved since IS gets their hands full. So which developers will be invited to make new FE? Sorry just thinking random things after watching this video lol

Honestly, I'm glad that Fire Emblem is more mainstream thanks to Awakening's success. It's one of the first strategy game series ever created, and offers something different to that of a typical fantasy RPG. While the inclusion of Casual mode (which actually debuted in New Mystery rather than Awakening), which disables the permadeath feature that made Fire Emblem stand out from its competitors, may be controversial to hardcore fans, it did allow more casual gamers to get into the series by making permadeath optional. While I started with Awakening (after learning about the series through Smash) and I do play the modern titles on Casual mode, that hasn't stopped me from playing the GBA titles and Radiant Dawn, which don't have the feature. Awakening may have its narrative problems due to it being an amalgamation of the past games, it's still regarded as the savior of the franchise, and having solid gameplay (it's also really easy to break the game thanks to the second seal system, which is always a blast to do). Heck, even Intelligent Systems is baffled by Awakening's success. While not my favorite game in the series, that honor goes to Three Houses and Engage (still trying to decide which of the two I like better), I still really like the game and am glad it exists. Now Nintendo considers Fire Emblem as one of their major IPs, and it wholeheartedly deserves it.
