Caring for his friends and admired as an older brother figure in his class, Sylvain is a perpetual skirt-chaser and often attempts to woo women with sweet words to a fault, with the most notable example including Ingrid's grandmother when he was only eight. He is fond of women but his easygoing, shallow, womanizing behavior stems from the fact that he feels unable to form proper romances, and so he dates around without any particular commitment. This does lead him into trouble (which Ingrid reluctantly has to help him resolve) and misunderstandings, such as Flayn insisting on avoiding him out of his notoriety, whereas Sylvain only wanted to pass along a message from Byleth.
This skirt chasing philanderer may appear shallow and carefree, but there lies depth behind his almond eyes.

Sylvain has a weird divide in the community. There’s the “he deserved his abuse because of what he does” and the “he’s a precious baby who hasn’t done anything wrong”. Both of these are wrong, what Sylvain does is understandable, but it doesn’t make it right, nor does it make the abuse he went through deserved. He represents the cycle of abuse, he was abused, so he struggles with self worth, put that on top of the fact almost everyone in his life only treated him as a crest, an object, he feels like that’s the way he should go about treating others. I think Sylvain is one of the most nuanced characters in 3H, hell, in all of Fire Emblem. He’s someone who embodies the awful nature of abuse and how someone who has suffered through it is susceptible to inflicting it on others, he’s someone who is both empathetic and hate-able. One of my personal favourites in the series.

@Wil E That's because Claude isn't very well developed. He feels very flat because he basically revolves around 2 concepts: schemes and anti racism. There's very little else to his character. I'm not sure about the context of this support tho since I haven't unlocked Ingrid/Claude in any of my runs. I'll have to check online for the details.

How does the 'deserve abuse because of bad behavior'' in any way make sense tho? He was abused by his brother long before he became a womanizer. His father views him essentially as breeding stock like a prized stallion. He treats women poorly as a result of this shaping his childhood. Not the other way around. People who say this about Sylvain must not even understand his character, because his bad behavior is an unfortunate, but understandable result of his circumstances. It's a bad cycle: he was viewed negatively by his brother, treated poorly by his father, viewed as a stud horse by women, so in turn he became rather indifferent towards women and doesn't get emotionally attached when bouncing back and forth between his conquests.

But Claude is basically a naive idealistic, even worse than Dimitri because he believes all problems will magically go away by opening up country borders. And I'm like ... How does that eliminate every problem in society? And how do you plan to make that work?

He just believes that ignorance and racism, which ruined a lot of his life, will fade away because Fodlan/Almyra have literally never had anything besides a simple hostile relationship. Their world hasn't witnessed the failure of multiculturalism in the West, how people self-segregate throughout any supposedly integrated society, if anything his perspective is understandable and tragic even if it's misguided. Dimitri is a fundamentally terrible leader, in his Ingrid support he talks about how he can't make the hard decisions and Ingrid literally tells him he's too soft hearted to be king. If Byleth and Gilbert weren't there advising and planning for him he would have run Faerghus into the ground.

@@Anonymous00616 Dimitri is a naive leader but he's not a terrible leader. When he's consumed by vengeance then he would be, but that's obviously not his full character. His support with Ingrid is about his soft hearted ideals, but he's said on more than one occasion that although he hates killing, he knows it's necessary at times. He definitely doesn't have a problem making hard decisions but he believes he's in the wrong to do so. Claude's idea basically ignores self autonomy and pride and nationalism in one's own country. Nobody in their right mind would say that countries should just eliminate state lines or national borders. Who would believe that? Countries are separate for reasons. It's beyond naive to believe you should form a united Fodlan just to eliminate racism and discrimination. Edelgard forcefully does this: believing that all countries should have zero autonomy and just be united under her rule and her decisions. And while I don't believe Claude would have resorted to war to achieve his goals, his ideals are no less naive or poorly conceived.

Sylvain one of my favorite characters in 3 houses. You rarely see the playboy type having reasons for their actions, which is a welcome change. Also I made him my dancer for the utility and healing. Boy, he can dodge. He can be good as a trickster with his good spell list and high in speed and strenght.

3:15 I disagree on the "Sylvain would never notice that" bit. In his Mercedes supports that you just mentioned he is shown getting emotional because of Mercedes's actions (presumably for not treating him like an object and him relating to her issues). I think this is the fundamental problem with supports in Fire Emblem; all character development is essentially erased after the supports.

@@LadyViolet1 What I mean is it's progress. Maybe in a few games down the line they'll do coding for that affects the actual storyline or at least character lines. As for examples - if Lorenz has done Marriane supports he'll make a comment on how beautiful she is at the end of Battle of Eagle and Lion (several other characters also have lines depending on supports for this particular scene.) Sylvain's line about Smiling in Marriane's support come sup in Marriane's support with Ashe. Hanneman's support changes the subject matter depending on if it's pre or post Jeralt's death when you start the rank.

I love Sylvain. His quote during Byleth's B? support that you showed in the video is one of my favorites. I love how he can go from being really serious, harsh, and cynical (almost dangerous looking in a way) to messing around like nothing happened. I truly don't believe that line was a joke and I think that's what the game devs intended us to think. He's a much angrier character than most people notice, which is fascinating to watch. Especially if you never recruit him, you could be fooled into thinking his personality is very shallow and stupid and archetypal, when really he's a subversion of that archetype.

A lot of people judge Sylvain for being a pervert with no respect for women without realizing that he was abused by his older brother when he was kid and his father told him that he must find a woman and marry her so he can birth a precautionary heir to the Gautier Family, nothing more. His friend Ingrid was also told to bear children for her family along with Mercedes, Marianne, Linhardt, Caspar, Bernadetta, Ignatz, Felix, Edelgard and Dimitri. Sylvain's male friends are meant to breed with a women so she can birth them heirs while his female friends are like a dog after winning the dog show, to breed more and more heirs for their families until the end of time. One of the few reasons why I choose to ship him with either Dorothea or Byleth is because these two are commoners who aren't bound by aristocratic traditions and they offer him a chance to have a normal life. Sure Byleth and Sylvain end up having children in the end, but at least they chose to start a family. Sylvain is a lot like Denji from Chainsaw Man. Both are teenagers who are criticized by Twitter and SJWs for being perverts without realizing that they come from abusive families and just want a normal life with a girlfriend they can spend the rest of their lives with. This is what happens when you let the #Metoo movement go too far.

Something to note about Sylvain is how deceptively weak/slow he is at first, as his base strength only counteracts 1 point of weight, making an iron lance bring his speed down to 4. (Heck, in my azure moon Maddening run, he's getting strength screwed and even Ingrid has better strength than him now) In my first run, I made Sylvain a Paladin and eventually a Great Knight. He wasn't very good because of how slow he was, but he could one-round enemies with a brave lance before they could hit him back.

Sylvain is one of my fav charas if not he is my favorite. When I played my first route (golden deer) he asked to get into my class bc I am in fact female. He became the MVP so fast I recuted him in every other route too and every time, he was/is the MVP. Also I don't think his flirting is that bad. Its just words he doesn't chain up girls and does the unspeakable, if you know what I mean. Futhermore everyone knows he is playing with girls and they should know that if you get involved with him, its a possibility that he'll break your heart.

One of my favorite things about Sylvain is how actually hateful he can be to Byleth, both in support and if you face him on the battlefield. It’s just a nice touch and a good way to show Sylvain’s darker side. It also helps that after all the Corrin asskissing in fates, it’s a breath of fresh air.

I think Black Magic Sylvain is actually really underrated; his shaky growths can be easily fixed by any Black Magic class past Mage, which bumps it up to a more respectable 40%. He’s also a good candidate in Blue Lions for the early game Spirit Dusts you get, since Mercedes will have plenty of Mag to do her job, and Annette is best as a Rally bot until late game where she can run Crusher/Bolt Axe Wyvern strats. The usual Mag +2 and Fiendish Blow also help. His spell list, while not the most varied, gives him some high damage spells to compensate for his slightly lower Mag, and will ensure he rarely runs out of uses even as a Dark Knight. He’ll also have pretty decent defense and speed on average, meaning he can tank Phys units with low Res and demolish them on counter attack, and might double enemies due to Fire’s low weight, but will at least usually be able to avoid being doubled himself. Finally, if you manage to recruit Lorenz into your army, you can get the Thyrsus as soon as Ch 7, giving him 4 range on all of his spells. This also has the excellent benefit of often providing the upgraded linked attack bonus he has with both Ingrid and Felix, as long as he stays relatively close to the enemies they’re dealing with. Plus his Faith list gives him free Physic utility in a pinch, and Seraphim for dealing with monsters. Swift Strikes is good and all, but the Blue Lions are really lacking a unit who can bait out long range archers and deal back meaningful damage without dying; Sylvain serves that role well and provides a lot of good utility while also dealing consistently strong magic damage

In my Blue Lions play through, I made Sylvain a Dark Knight and he was actually pretty good. Physic was fun, no one could hit him, and I could easily use Swift Strikes or the Lance of Ruin whenever I needed

@@stevenliang3213 thats why I never put him into the cavalier or paladin classes. I made him a dark knight without it. putting him through the mage classes for fendish blow or through the brigand class to war master or wyvern classes. he was by far the most mvp in all my playthroughs.

TBH, I'd say Sylvain was shining most as the Dark Knight, but that might change - while Great Knight could be seen as highly encouraged due to his potentials, blooming talent in reason is better than no talent in armor and IMO, he's not as much supposed to be total powerhouse as jack of all trades that will become a powerhouse later. While his build can be more magic or physical oriented based on cavalry or mage progression, around 2 chapters after timeskip he'll typically become a Dark Knight allowing him to murder low defense units while deleating armored enemies with magic, while having a handy physic in case an ally is at risk, which will play nicely into BL hard hitting structure where he'll clean up after Dedue's counterattacks, allowing Dedue to utilize his passive while allowing Dimitri, Anette and Felix to one-round their enemies without being left behind in EXP himself, only to become a physical Lysinthea afterhe gets his signature lance combat art.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Silvain having a reason hidden talent in reason because his VA is a Magician, it was confirmed in an interview Joe was in I would also personally recommend the Dark Mage class line for Silvain in the mid-late game area. Despite the low movement he has access to 7 total spells and Heartseeker can certainly help his shaky hit rate too, and Poison strike can really help him in more of a chip-damage roll to compensate his lower magic growth, due to it being a % based skill it will scale as the game progresses too

When Three Houses came out Sylvain was the first character I was looking to recruit, and is easily among my favorites in the game. One of my favorite hidden gems about Sylvain is found in his lost item,The History of Sreng,that shows that even though he’s having the responsibility of being the future head of his house forced upon him,he’s serious enough about the approaching task and studies up on their history in order to one day form better relations with the people of Sreng since it’s constantly at a point of conflict being so close to Gautier territory.

@@kaelanmcalpine2011 I wouldn't worry about him "not using his relic well". Not having Lancefaire just means missing out on 5 damage. Unless you're doubling/Swift Striking. Then it's actually problematic. The Relic is still ridiculously good enough to cover for it. War Master's issue is the lack of mov. Why Wyvern Lord/Paladin is better is just because they let you get around much faster/accomplish more across the map comparatively.

@@tacticalstampede5678 I don't know about Paladin, I made him and Ferdinand into one (technically Sylvain was a Great Knight but I realized last minute that he needed armor ro be up) in Crimson Flower and they probably were the least contributing members compared to say Wyvern!Edelgard, Falcon!Bernie or Felix. Though extra movement is definitely an advantage, I just wish it didn't come at the cost of a massive speed penalty, though I do understand there's ways around that, I made Bernie into an assassin before she became a Bow Knight in BL to try to counteract that.

Ayy its my favorite character! I was waiting for this one! I agree with a lot of things you said about Sylvain, especially about his supports. They are by far my favorites in the game to listen to. But despite him having so many I wish he could go further with a lot of them. Because his support with Marianne, for example, was really good I think. But it ends with them saying they'll go into town at some point for Marianne to show off her smile. I just wish they took it past B, along with other supports. He's just such an interesting character to see unfold, he's really not what you'd expect him to be at first glance.

I still don't understand how Sylvain is a controversial character when his actions are very clearly given a reason why he acts that way and its shown how his background has shapes him. It's not justified but its understandable. He's definitely one of my favorites and someone who turns outs as one of the best in any of my playthroughs. He makes a hella great Dark Knight and he even learns physic to be a decent healer. However I tend go make him a wyvern and make use of him learning swift strikes. Though I do tend to make him a mage as some point to buff his res a bit.

It's quite a shame, because they did such a good job building his character. And his is one of the few that makes sense to be fleshed out in supports because he'd have to trust you to even go into family abuse. But even if you don't go into his supports it's quite clear in BL route that he cares quite deeply for his friends and will go the mile for them so I don't see how that wouldn't allow some leniency towards him.

Good spotlight though I do believe one support he has that gets seriously overlooked at is his support with Dedue. In this support we see how self aware Sylvain really is and how his poor reputation can be treated as a double edge sword where on one side no one respects him but on the contrary due to that he has nothing to lose if he associates with people from Duscur. One of the biggest praises I can give Three Houses is how much it flips archetypes on their heads, while also making the reasoning behind character behaviors tie into the problems of the world itself. Most of the characters have problems directly related to the Crest system and the flawed political state of the continent, which *really* helps solidify Fodlan as a living, breathing world. Sylvain is a shining example of why I think this way.

My (tied for) favorite boy! I love Sylvain sooo much, and he was best boy until Yuri came along and tied him. SO HYPED FOR THIS SPOTLIGHT! Also, I think that as far as Sylvain being a womanizer, there’s an important factor that a lot of people miss, and Mangs only touched on it briefly. The more you dive into Sylvain’s supports, the more you see that he treats women like objects because he believes that’s all they’ll ever see him as: an object, a means to an end. He’s afraid to develop any type of emotional attachment to a girl because he doesn’t think that any woman would ever look beyond his crest and want to form an emotional connection with him. Therefore, he’s actually quite a tragic character, even beyond the stuff with his brother. EDIT: I got to the end, and saw he talks about it more 👌

At first Sylvain looked like the typical flirt architype to me and I was expecting Inigo right off the bat. The typical flirt that acts happy on the inside while also trying to cheer people up so he doesn't have to feel sad. Once you see the supports you see a darker side that gives him depth. Also Sylvain can actually get girls successfully and is a lot more cynical compared to the flirt architypes. Apparently in the Jap version he found a cross dressing man to also be attractive while the other versions he finds a scarecrow dressed up to be sexy.

toshio1334 I believe they changed that not to remove the reference to Crossdressing (I mean Forrest was a character) but because it was stated to be embarrassing. At least that’s what I would assume.

Sylvain is one of the deeper characters in the game. I really like him a lot, and like you said compared to like Sain he has real reason as to why he is the way he is with women.

I'll always defend Sylvain. He's such a well written and nuanced character with a lot of depth. Even just looking at his roster sheet shows that, he's presented as a shallow womaniser yet he has a budding talent in reason and loves tactical games and art. Getting to peel away his facade to see the real character underneath is why I use him so much each time I play the game. (and I know that he's best used as a Great Knight or Wyvern Lord but I somehow always make him a dark knight haha)

Amazing as always Mangs 😃👍 When I just first started 3H, I played as Female Byleth and accidentally recruited him without knowing what the hell I was doing 😂 and he ended up surpassing Ferdinand by a huge leap, I’m assuming just bad rng on Ferdinand’s side but he was very lucky when I put him into a bunch of the magic classes, mostly to skill grind, and he actually did better than I’d thought! As for what character(s)for the next spotlight: the big hungry muscle boy Raphael (personal favorite), king of Dad puns Alois (another personal favorite), the girl who desperately needs a freaking hug, Marianne( Jesus Christ please give this girl a hug!), or the best healer in the game Mercedes(as much as I really love her, I am wondering why she an option for S-support for the females, I ain’t judging of course, but it felt a little off when I saw the options) Can’t wait for another spotlight!

@@AkameGaKillfan777 that's cool, but my sylvain got cucked by stat growths in general. He kept on getting 2 stat growths per level. By endgame he barely reached around past 30 points in one stat whilst my whole blue lions team averaged around 35+. Besides dedue, mu, and Dimitri. One thing I did like tho was the fact that he had so much damn hp, almost 100 lol.

Great video Mangs! Sylvain is a great character to analyze for videos like this. He's got so much depth and he's very likable even while you roll your eyes at some of his dialogue. I will always vouch for dancer sylvain. He learns some good reason spells, as well as physic, and his attack and magic growths are fairly balanced. The bad speed from the cav line really hurts him, and with so many other good physical units in BL especially, its nice for him to have his own niche. Besides, he has a lot of good supports, and making him a dancer makes gaining support points a lot easier.

People don't like Sylvain? That's surprising. I initially disliked him, assuming him to just another slacker trying to get laid, but after reading all his supports, I'm surprised at how thoughtful and progressive he can be if he tries, as you said. His support with Dedue was amazing. I thought it was basically going to be: "Stop flirting. You're inconveniencing his Highness." "No." "Okay." But man, did his comments about the individuals not being responsible for the majority's crimes and that someone else was probably behind the Tragedy was surprising. .

I disagree with the statement Sylvain won't be combat equal to Felix. Sylvain, once WK and WL will surpass Felix as a BK / Assassin/ Sniper by far. Swift strike allows him to kill assassins and SMs with death blow and forged lance. Something felix wouldn't be able to do until Hunter Volley or praying for crits. He's also way better enemy phase with Alert stance /+ and weapon triangle since he would be trained in both axe and lance.

I actually ended up liking Sylvain a lot, and rather early on, too. At first, yeah, he was just a fuck boy, but then his C-supports with Dedue and Annette show that he's rather intelligent and reasonable. He just has a major projecting issue.
