I ran some numbers. Since I we can’t see Louise max hp I assumed roughly 35. While GABY’s victory was certainly low odds, it wasn’t particularly low odds. With 9 crits and 17 hits, roughly 34% crit rate so close enough, GABY kills Louise in 13 rounds on average. At 33% hit rate Louise has a 13.8% chance hitting 2 or fewer times in 13 rounds.

How do you figure GABY takes 13 rounds of combat to deal 35 damage? 9 crits and 17 hits would take 13 rounds of combat, but it would deal 44 damage, not 35. By my math GABY averages 3.48 damage/round, which would take roughly 10 rounds of combat to deal 35 damage. Louis has a 30.7% chance to hit 2 or fewer times in 10 rounds of combat.

It's just the writing people didn't like. No one argues the actual gameplay or presentation is bad. It's far and away the best game in the entire series in that regard. The story and how the characters are written are just kind of whatever at best, and groan worthy at worst.

Do you have actual control of your character during combat in this game?

No. You have tactical control of them during battle by choosing where they move and who they attack during your turn, but the actual fights themselves play out automatically. Note the Hit & Crit chances? Those show how likely it is for the unit to successfully land a hit and how likely they are to land a critical hit (which deals triple the normal damage). But if you enjoy Strategy-RPGS, it's definitely worth giving FE a shot. :)
