I often think of Eddie Murphy in Bowfinger running through the “happy premises” agreed upon by he and his therapist, including “even though I feel like I might ignite, I probably won’t.” This says to me that there has been much discussion between he and his therapist about this particular topic and the best they could settle on, which feels accurate because that’s pretty much as close as any of us can get.
@YakovTow Жыл бұрын
you know, all the cases that you described are very similar to the consequences of using ether. People who have been using ether for a long time (now it is quite unpopular, but it is extremely easy to make or get it) can become quite flammable and literally burn out!! And they also smell very sweet:3 at least until the moment when they burn down

For the Robert Bailey case - have you ever heard of the short film Six Shooter with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson? There's a part of it where they talk about a particularly gassy cow, and actually the fact it's from a film isn't relevant at all, my point is: to deal with cows that have trapped wind, and prevent them from literally blowing up, farmers have to vent the gas by poking a hole in the side of the cow, to release the methane. And since methane is flammable, they'll usually ignite the end where the methane is coming out, just to have a visual indicator. The flame from this is blue. I have no idea how, logistically, this guy would've got a hole in his abdomen, or then gotten a flame near it, but all I can imagine from the way there's specifically a hole with one source of flame in this story is that Mr Bailey had some sort of Six Shooter flaming methane vent incident...?
@babbittybabbitt11 ай бұрын
Certain problems in the bowels, etc. can cause fistulas (holes) in the abdomen that go from the organ to the outside, so it seems possible that he had a fistula, gasses were escaping through it and were ignited somehow. Though you'd think they'd notice that lol

I have a few theories on SHC, loss of blood flow to adipose tissue could cause a rotting of portions of body fat that could break down into low moisture, highly flammable fat and gasses. This could seep through the skin and create a "candle" style burn.

And they said that like one of the first types of plastic made was very flammable ( I think tabletennis balls were still made from this?) But people wore like clothes made of this type of plastic and there are like stories of dresses catching on fire and all and burning entirely. So yeah my theory is flammable clothing in the Victorian era

Update 2024. There has been another case, in Russia, where I live. It happened on the night of January 8 in Moscow, in the apartment of one of the houses on Shokalskogo proezd. A guy woke up from a terrible scream in his apartment and saw his wife, engulfed in flames, running down the corridor. Terrified, the man threw a blanket over her, put her out and quickly called an ambulance. By then the woman was already unconscious. The victim was urgently hospitalized at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute with burns to 65 percent of her body. The woman could not be saved: she died without regaining consciousness.

Spontaneous combustion puts a whole new meaning to “going out with a bang” But In all seriousness my personal theory would be some sort of gas buildup either from breathing in gases from the environment and combustion inside the body or gastric pressure that somehow doesn’t erupt the organs and creates an explosion that ingulfs the body

I normally don't give my life story in comments, but I feel this is applicable. So when I was 4, my father fell asleep drunk with a lit cigarette. He caught on fire and ended up with 3rd degree burns on 30% of his body. Now, my mom didn't know how to explain to me what had happened, so she just said "it just happens sometimes". That was all fine and dandy until I was watching a show as a kid that went over weird phenomenon and one of them was SHC. I'm sure you can imagine my conclusion. For YEARS I was terrified of SHC. Like, paranoia levels of terrified. I was convinced if I slept, it would happen and that led to me sleeping in my mom's bed because I thought that if I was next to her, she could stop the flames if they started. I even slept in the tub sometimes so I could just turn the shower on if it happened. Eventually I learned the truth of the situation but yeah. Moral of the story is don't smoke cigarettes when you're drunk and don't let seven year olds watch weird tv.

what I get from his words is that the flame was lit with alcohol as fuel leading me to think that some other cause was what lit the initial spark as a fire needs oxygen fuel and heat, commonly this heat is derived from friction however it is my belief that the heat from the stomach acid must have been mixed with some friction from some other foods and oxygen that somehow got inside his stomach, most likely through drinking alcohol that would bring oxygen bubbles through with it and eventually was enough to cause a fire resulting in smoke being made and rupturing through his stomach and also choking him on its fumes. The blueness of the flames could be explained by some minerals in the food he ate that could change its colour. I must say that I have barely any idea what I am talking about but I'm just using what I remember from science classes.

In your "pictures" you show a fake pile of ashes, but if you show the actual picture of the scene, there are some famous ones, it makes it obvious that the person was siting, or whatever, and the center of them was consumed by the fire. So by not showing that you can make it seem that they just burst into flames or something, which they didn't. They just burned like a candle.
