On the topic of fires, here are some things I learned about living in Colorado bc the Marshall fire stopped a few miles away from my home: wood chips spread fire fast so great for your garden but if you are in high fire area consider a gravel perimeter around your home and maybe gravel on property edge and then wood chips in beds and around plants. You can spray wood chips and plants with a retardant called Komodo. Something to consider if you have wood chips and can spray it on perimeter. Next was that fire spread rapidly along wood fences. Consider adding sections that are not wood next to house or they do make fences out of fire resistant woods now you can use (Maybe for your new fence Janey someday). You can stain preexisting wood fence with fire retardant as well. I keep a go kit, fire blanket, have important documents in portable fire safe, have two big fire extinguishers on the property now. The Marshall Fire changed how I thought about this because I always felt it was a mountain problem and it ripped through our suburbs in hours with no warning for families to escape.

My daughter’s house was 2 blocks away on 2 sides from the fire in Louisville. Scary stuff. They were in MInnesota visiting me at the time so didn’t have to go through evacuating etc. Thanks for the tips I will pass them on to my daughter. :)

Hi Janey, just have to say I adore your channel. I am a novice gardener in Petaluma and revamped my whole front and back yard this Spring. I binge watched your videos and planted quite a few of the plants you have planted and recommended over the years. I felt confident with my selection and happy to say my yard looks fantastic. You have so much to do with that. Thank you for making these videos. The reason I’m writing to you today is to let you know how much I appreciate you talking about drip and what you are choosing to start out with for the plant. This would have been helpful and a good starting point for me as well. Also, you taught me drip in your Oak tree flower bed. That was a great video for beginners too.

It’s really refreshing to watch a garden channel in my zone. It’s a challenging zone to plant in, and you have to be ready for lots of disappointments! It’s easy to plant a beautiful, lush, green garden in a moist, warm climate!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing how you tapped into the existing hose to hook up the new plant to drip. We just bought 15 drought-resistant plants from our water sanitation district and need to hook them up to drip and this video was so helpful to get us started. ❤

This is such an important topic for our area! I live in Brentwood, on the literal edge of town with crop fields behind my fence. Last week we had a 250+ acre fire come within feet of my home and had to evacuate. The firefighters and first responders were amazing and had it under control within hours and no homes were damaged. Something I think is important to mention is defensible space around your property. Making sure tall weeds are cut down, plants and trees are well maintained/trimmed, flower beds are kept clear of dry/dead material, etc. We realized that we needed to take the weed eater to the field side of our fence where things had gotten too tall and the farmer's tractor can't get to. Stay safe and cool during the high temps this week!

I planted the El Niño last fall. It was a small mail order plant. It is already pushing 5’ tall. It has not bloomed yet, but I am looking forward to the blooms. I planted it by the street at the entrance of a new path and flowerbeds I made this year. I noticed all the delivery drivers just park in the street and walk across the grass so I made a path for them and others to use. It gave me a perfect excuse for more planting areas. After 16 years in our home, our front yard has a lot of shade in the middle of that path through the trees.

Hi Janey, In garden zone 10 inland SoCal 🌸 I use a lot of drip lines ! A GREAT TIP I learned from my engineer husband is to heat up the tip of the skinny “spaghetti line” with a long neck lighter for just a second or two , al around it -- It makes inserting the coupler soooo much easier !! 😅 Treesa

Now I know what that plant is called. I saw a smokebush in Moab, Utah last summer while I was on vacation, and I had to stop the car just to get a closer look. It was in full bloom and it was stunning. I am so excited that you added it to your garden, and it looks amazing next to the juniper. 💕

I thought that chitalpa was a cross between two plants - desert willow and catalpa. Native plants on their own but I didn't think that it would be considered a native plant. That being said: I love it!

Love the Winecraft smoke bush, I bought one last fall. It really does well in the heat and hot sun in Windsor, Ca. I can't say the same for my Lorepetalum which is at the opposite end of the flower bed. I'm going to try spraying it with wilt stop and if that doesn't help I'll move it. This week is predicted to be triple digits, today it was 107! Ugh! I'm enjoying your best for the west plant selections, really helpful. Your property has come a long way since last fall, looking SO GOOD!!

The first time I remember seeing smoke bushes was nearly 20 years agp on a business trip in Salisbury England. They were planted along a walking paths and had been pruned to form small trees. Their trunks were nearly a foot in diameter with beautifully gnarled bark They were in full bloom and looked incredible.

I live in the Phoenix area. Because of the extreme heat I’m loosing most of my plants that were suppose to survive in this climate. My established plants that are common for my area are doing fine. It’s so discouraging seeing them struggle and die. Last year I used shade cloth but I had surgery this year and wasn’t able to protect them. I’ve tried some of the proven winners plants and they fried. The Plumgo plant doesn’t do well here unless it’s in complete shade with a little morning sun. I have an east/west yard. Front East/back west. I love your channel but some of the plants in the Best for the West doesn’t survive for me. I’m in zone 9b.

There is a native Fla smoke tree (often called old man beard) I grew one in a pot about 30 years ago. And have not found it in garden center since. That variety was considered endangered and could mostly be found along area of Central Florida what was commonly called the ridge, which ran from Claremont all the way down past Lake Wales, and Sebring. I do know of 3 smoke trees or old man’s beard trees that are growing in Lakeland area. My tree did well for me until after a couple moves. It got neglected and it passed. I have never tried growing a “ smoke bush” nor have i seen this plant in any form in any garden centers around Central Florida .

Central Washington is also a very high fire area. We’ve already had several this year, though they have managed to keep them fairly small. But we often have fires that are over 100,000 acres. All the way up to over 400,000 acres. It is high desert here. Less than 9 inches of precipitation per year, almost constant wind and hot summers. Though not as hot as farther south, generally only a few days over 100, but a lot in the 90’s. Humidity is often in the 15% range or lower. Zone 6a where I am. Snow in the winter and I have personally seen -9 F There last 2 winters.

Oh the wildfires 😣 We lived in Northern CA for several years (West Sac/husband was superintendent at El Macero, then Vacaville/husband was superintendent at Silverado in Napa) and the wildfires every summer were terrifying. The rest of the country associates California with earthquakes. I always say that the wildfires are the real CA natural disaster to fear! We were in N. Ca from 2008 to 2014.

Hi Janey - Karla here from zone 9b Southern CA/Sunset zone 18. First of all, I appreciate your thoughtfulness for topics in your videos. Considering wildfires is something that a lot of gardeners don't consider until you live through it. My question is if you would recommend getting the Perfecto Mundo Azalea in the larger container? I got four from PW in the smaller container and one is doing well, but three struggled with the heat so I transferred them from my flower bed to shaded planters. The one in the bed has dark green glossy leaves - the other three lost leaves and stems are still pliable but bare. They all were amended with Espoma for Azaleas and regularly watered. Thank you!

Okay. I have a silly question. I noticed that all gardening channels when they are hooking up drip. They refer to the amount of water. And they say one gallon per hour and we run it 15 minutes or 30 minutes or whatever. So if you run it for 30 minutes and it's a one gallon per hour. How come the shows just don't say a half a gallon for thirty minutes?

That's very interesting that these plants are fire resistant.....but how? What makes them fire resistant? Especially the smoke bush which looks like it would act like kindling with those frizzy blooms! I would have imagined that a spark would light that thing up like a firecracker! I'd love to know a bit more about the WHY and HOW of it all......google was no help at all.

Watch the smoke bush, it will make so many poofy seed heads all summer long that look a lot like tumble weeds and will roll in the wind scattering seeds everywhere. A neighbour has one and I am constantly cleaning up baskets full that blow down the road and into my garden bed. I despise them more than Japanese beetles and that says a lot.

I’m in 9b Texas and I don’t think they sell smoke bush here. We use loropetalum for a purple leaved plant here although I’d much rather have smoke bush. I know they do grow in North Carolina where it gets very hot and humid so I’m wondering if it’s the night time temps that make the difference. It stays in the 80s in Houston over night.

A Chitalpa doesn't appear on the Lady Bird Johnson list of North American native wildflowers since, even though both its parent plants are natives, it is a man-made hybrid. I read it originated in a botanic garden in Uzbekistan I wonder if it is beneficial to native polinators since it doesn't appear in nature?
