Here's a cover of the theme from the first stage of Fire Shark released in 1990 on Sega Genesis! Fire Shark is a game I'd never heard of before, but when I got tipped off about the soundtrack, I was pleasantly surprised to discover it sounded like a Mega Man song run through an Iron Maiden filter, pretty epic stuff loaded with excellent twin harmonies at almost all times!
For tracking this song, I tried to lean into what I felt was a pretty Iron Maiden-esque arangement by playing drums more in line with something that Nicko McBrain might play. And even though I generally play uptempo bass more accurately with a pick, I went for no pick which I discovered was a good idea as a few of the bass parts late in the song have some string skipping that would've been rough with a pick. The main melodies I played on guitar, however, to channel the crazy phasey sound of the main lead melody from the OST, I added a pretty crazy Surge XT patch as an extra texture. Finally, to not go too Maiden on the arrangement, rather than add power chord heavy rhythm guitars, I wrote some minimal keyboard parts to fill in the arrangement with strings.
Overall, this was a real gem of a song to discover, and I had a blast putting it together, particularly hearing all the harmonies arranged on guitar! Definitely one of the more fun things I've encountered running this YT page are discovering songs like this that I probably otherwise would've never encountered, let alone learned to play!
