Lithium-ion batteries are changing the world. They are now used in electric cars, bikes, scooters, electric forklifts, power tools, energy storage systems and numerous other applications. They are the 20th century’s default energy storage medium. Li-ion battery packs consist of several battery cells and a battery management system. The system ensures precise charge and discharge currents.
However, due to the increased energy density, fire becomes a common concern associated with their usage. In general, Lithium-ion batteries operate between a range of +15 and +45°C. Stability of the battery cell and thus the safety of the electric device or system largely depends on cells operating within this range. If temperature exceeds a critical level, thermal runaway occurs.
Protection from thermal runaway has attracted much attention recently since its quite challenging to control the rapid and powerful energy release without a fire incident occurring. Consequently, FirePro & Partners have initiated and continue to perform relevant fire suppression tests to better understand how we can protect Li-Ion related applications across industries.
