Sometimes things go easy. This isn't one of those times, but I'm not going to let it stop me. I'm changing out the rockshaft seals for the 3 point hitch on the Oliver 1855 project.

My Oliver mechanic friend Joe had told me tales of how hard some of those arms are to get off, but I never witnessed it. That was quite a fight, but you prevailed in the end. Seems like you always find a way. Thanks for another great video.

Thanks Charlie! It ended up being easier than the 1655. You have to drive out the bushing with the shaft to get it out to put in the press. I still had to heat that one with my 75 ton press pushing on it to get it free.

I think I'm going to on this one. I'm definitely going to make sure the plug for oil return turns before I put it back on.

Chris, great job of showing the seal replacement and the inside of the High Pressure Lift housing. Just a suggestion while you have the housing on the stand: point out in another video how the rockshaft external follow up linkage works and what happens when the cast part of the linkage seizes to the shaft. The non cab tractors seemed to be the worst for rust in that area, and we used to add a grease fitting to the casting to prevent future problems. That little item caused many gasket failures at the rear of the HPL housing, as well as overheating the type 55 hydraulic oil.

Thanks for the suggestion, I should be able to add that to a future video.

I’m pretty sure that tube is the return line for the three point valve under the top cover. As you may recall last year when I worked on my 1855 hydraulic unit, taking that arm off was the only part that went easy. Thank goodness I didn’t have to waste all that time cleaning up. Thanks nature, you make the best oil dry! ❤️ Also, don’t try to balance on your balls, that’s not healthy.

If my old age rattled brain remembers correctly that screen assembly with the holes in it was a diffuser. I remember we had to install them because the oil returning was causing "Eddys" which was allowing the hot oil to be directly sucked into the pump. This was more prevalent in the returns from hyd. motors and the like. The diffuser stopped that problem. As I said, that is a memory from long, long ago from a shop far away.

That makes sense. Probably why they had the cooler oil return there instead of up front too, to get it mixed in better.

Somewhere in an undisclosed location at the farm is an oil can that was buried underground when it erupted into flames while applying a slightly flammable liquid… (sometimes it’s easier to hide the evidence than deal with the repercussions) lol
