Thanks, Gary, for showing the process. And pitfalls. The lessons we learn through adversity stick the most. I’ve always remembered two thoughts: 1. Experience is something we gain right after we needed it. 2. Experience teaches us to recognize a mistake when we are making it again. Now I just need a milling machine for surfacing glue-ups. I love your videos almost as much as I admire your attitude!

Thank you very much Ken. I like you thoughts on lessons learn and could no agree more. I use my milling machine with fly cutter a lot for flattening these thin boards. It does the job and does not take all that long. Since it is CNC controlled I can have it doing one part while I cut another piece at the band saw. If they would have had a drum sander at Rockler back in 2021 when I was building an information desk I would have bought one then. I just could not wait the 3 months at the time. Maybe someday but I get by without it and I really do not have the room for one. Thanks for watching and your comments. Much appreciated. Gary

...it's a keeper...👍...no two wood grains are identical, and neither are flaws...but the wood grains come together to produce something beautiful, and the flaws add character... It's a gorgeous bowl...very well done! Matt

Gary, that bowl looks just fine ... just call it the "fiasco bowl" instead of a "dizzy bowl". I like that, with all your experience, you aren't afraid to try something new, nor are you afraid to show and admit that it didn't go as planned or intended - but you still finished it with something usable and attractive.

Trying new methods is how we advance in design and production. So you tried a NEW method, it didn't quite work, the first time. You learned a lot and the bowl still came out alright. I would call this generally a success. ;-)

Thank you Robert, yes I think it looks pretty cool. Not to make excuses but I am used to my CNC software that I have used for a long time. The way the stuff is designed for laser's does not follow the standard in CNC but I was aware of the 3 options that they do have. Not going to fool me again so for sure I have learned something. Thanks for watching, Gary

Definitely display this bowl. In addition to being very cool, it is an experiment with a new and interesting technique. A good first step and a good lesson learned. Bike Memory Spoiler Alert: As a 12-year old, I as going full tilt down a steep gravel road. I decided to show off to my friends by crouching with my feet up on the bike seat. This went well for about 15 seconds, whereupon I hit some loose gravel and, according to eye witness accounts, I had the most spectacular wipeout anyone had ever seen. My friends were discussing how to get me to the hospital when I stood up in a dust cloud and started laughing. I was the ripped-clothing, bent-bike, road-rash champion. (My Dad said the only reason I survived is because I landed on my head.) Despite this and other stunts, I lived to tell the tales, to endure the subsequent arthritis, and to enjoy wood working videos. Thanks for the video -- and the memory jog. 😎

Thank you Jerry and I know it will work the next time. So I did not mention I did not even crash, I have many stories of bike ridding . We used to ride down a steep twisting road with no hands on the bars. That was not bad because I was pretty good at it. Once on my paper route I was all done and coming back up a steep hill and my handle bars broke. i slipped off the seat and landed on the cross bar. I wont say any more!!! Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks Phil, so I kicked myself a few times after seeing the mess then set it aside. Got over all that and decided I just might be able to get something out of it. The fact that I did not have a lot of hope with the colors of the scraps in making a cool dizzy bowl I was shocked at the design it made. You know how hard it is to give up on a piece and I very seldom do. Sure glad this was one that got finished. Thanks a lot my friend, PS making another special 3D printed tailstock piece to finish next weeks turning. Hope I can get the turning done before Thursday! Take care, Gary

That's excellent Gary. Like the other commenters have said, you are not afraid to try something new, and show us as you experiment. I like that. And the result is beautiful, if not quite perfect. Certainly a worthy project. That ring cutting method is really nice. Can we send you our planks to cut rings for us? :) I would really like to try that method if I can find a way to make the rings. Will have to think about that. But you have opened the door for sure. Thank you!

So there is another way I have not tried and will end up being faster.(The laser is slow but I was supposed to be able to walk away. I bought one of those glue roller applicators like yours and I love it. I found that it works best by putting the glue in a squiggly bead on the board then use the roller to smooth it out. I tried using the tray like a paint tray but that made a mess and the tray doesn't hold near enough glue so I just use it as a holder. Don't try to clean it when you're done. Just let it dry and the thicker the glue on it when it dries the easier it is to clean. I still like the bowl even with the imperfections. Great job.

Gary, I think it looks terrific! Like so many things, if you don’t point out the mistakes, most people will just assume those things are supposed to be there. Come on, how many times have you messed up something on the guitar but keep a straight face, and behold no one knows it wasn’t part of the song!! My wife Nancy thinks it’s absolutely beautiful too. Hopefully you will do another one and show the laser cutting process in more depth. Cheers, Rick

Display it. Use it as a reminder. That's my opinion, but I'm still green enough that I'm less inclined to get rid of anything or give up on anything. That said, I can think of a few small ones I bailed on. With all the work you put in, if only to watch your precision working with so little material, it was worth it, Gary. And it is nice, regardless. I enjoyed watching this one become what it is.

@@ThePapa1947 Wood can be unpredictable, very! I had one piece, that literally exploded, took out one of my fluorescent tubes. Luckily, or because I'm an ex scout, (be prepared) I was standing to one side, so it didn't take out my teeth in passing! There are several videos on youtube of asian turners that use flat planks cut into rings, to conserve wood. They always use an angled cut, and fairly thick wood, carefully selected. It can be very frustrating when you think you're nearly done, and suddenly a hole appears! I had one, had reshaped to remove the hole, and it was looking quite good. Then in a moment of careless inattention, got a snatch, which destroyed it!😒 ...

Hey Gary! I think this is great, and I love that you also have crazy mad scientist ideas integrating the laser into your woodturning 😁. I’ve had the same kind of issues with LightBurn but it is an incredibly powerful program and I’m amazed at all it can do - if we are smart enough to figure it out anyway 😂. When you said you milled it to 180thou I wondered if you were gonna cut it on the laser and you did not disappoint-nor did the final product. I’m still farting around with the Two Trees rotary but finally got it dialed in and one tip I can offer is the use painter’s tape - cover the piece once you’ve got your project lined up and secure, and run an engraving job at like 3000mm/20% power. It will leave a line on the tape enough to see but doesn’t go through. Once you’re sure the laser is going where you think it’s going, remove the tape and change the job to your final cut or engrave settings. I actually used the roll of tape on the chuck rotary to dial in the mm/rotation and it worked perfectly. Sometimes even the framing looks OK and then somehow when it starts to burn, things aren’t doing what I wanted. I’m especially doing this on commissions or special pieces to eliminate potential boo-boos. I haven’t found a good way to align the rotary parallel to the laser head so running a 3mm rectangle around the piece on tape lets me know if the ends line up or not and has saved me some hassle already. Super nice recovery, and you didn’t blow through a wall so I say WiN! 😃😊

Thank you Lisa. Yes I really had to give it a try and it worked ok. I think the fact it was all hardwood and had glue to deal with it did not cut as easy as I would have liked. I may do it again and pick some softer wood. But I still want so good colors so that may be hard to do. I used a pencil mark to adjust the rotary to land in the same spot. And what I did was just use the move function in light burn and had it move the same as the circumference of the turning. You can have the laser light up at a low level while you are doing that. What numbers did you end up using in the rotary setup? Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, this is a very dizzy, dizzy bowl. Think using the laser to cut the rings is a good idea. What thickness did they end up? Can you explain the “black line” issue? The end product looks terrific. You amaze me with your creativity. 👍
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Skip. I think they ended up about .19" thick. So I was using the laser to cut rings. The Black lines were made from almost cutting through the rings that were not concentric with the outside. Once I saw that I stopped and cut them the way they were supposed to be done. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching, Gary
