This is the second tangent stave turning I have done. Because the pieces were long and narrow it was a bit tricky making sure I had stock to turn a shape . I like the shape I ended up with.
Made from Padauk, Maple and Sapele.
Here is the first Tangent Stave turning I did:
• COOL! Twisted Tangent...
I finished it with Deft Spay Lacquer and Acks Sanding Paste and Polish
Tools used: Sorby Bowl Gouges, Carbide Hollowing Tool and a Negative Rake Scraper

Wow, professor, another great glue-up and turning! You certainly have tight joints down pat! Your thought processes make me a little dizzy, though, much like some of your pieces do. You also have a patent on perfect finishes! Really a great job, my friend! I was also in the shop on Super Bowl Sunday! Hey, what's with the short sleeves? You guys having summer down there, already? Take good care, buddy and keep'em coming! Phil
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Well thank you Phil! It's really crazy how easy it is to get good joints doing this. They sort of just fit by themselves when tilted. But these fit good straight up and down so I felt good about it. As I recall it was a little cold that day but I really hate wearing long sleeves. I may own 1 long sleeve shirt that probably does not fit anymore LOL. I will break down and wear a sweat shirt when it is really cold but there will be a short sleeve on under it. Looking the weather today it looks like short sleeves from here on out. But it is supposed to get in the 20's this week. Be well my friend, Gary

@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Van! I decided every time I thought I needed a new tool I would first see if I could make one. All my carbide tools were made from steel stock I had on hand and the handles were from some Ash I had. To darn expensive for the big ones for a cheap guy like me. That and I enjoy making things if I can. take care, Gary
@oldsloane
@oldsloane Жыл бұрын
@@ThePapa1947 I agree that commercial carbide tools are unreasonably expensive and I have made all of my own just using cheap pry bar sets from my local Princess Auto store and carbides from Amazon and other sources. I usually turn a nice hardwood handle to make them more professional looking and can usually make one for less than $30 CND.

Thank You Gary.. When I watch your shows - #1- I watch, listen, try to anticipate & predict your next move...#2- I am looking in the background all over your wonderful shop to absorb as much personalized tooling .. #3- Go back to #1 & repeat, HA... Sooo much FUN watching you work Gary. Each show is like watching an Olympic high jumper. Every time you complete a difficult turning the next show you just move the bar up another notch!!! ... Watching, I feel like taking notes in "Professor Gary's woodturning class". .. Another wonderful piece and am looking forward, wondering what "notch" will Gary select for his next show???..... TM

Thanks so much my friend. I do love making things out of the norm. But I also love to make simple turnings. That said I have a simple one on the lathe BUT I forgot to tell the wood this was going to be easy. I am hopping around on one foot mostly because i did injury my little toe and there is a cut on the bottom that is slow to heal. Bare foot on wet tile is not real secure . Foot went up against a hard surface and my doctor says to stay off my feet. But when she is not looking I sneak out to the shop LOL. Main reason for what I thought would be a quick and easy turning. So I will spread it out for 3 or 4 days. Take care, Gary

I really, really appreciate that you do not play crappy music in the background so that I can hear and concentrate on the content. Great videos, you are a very talented man and you are quickly becoming a hero of mine.

Thank you very much. Back when I started making videos I had no idea what I wanted to do. I had music in a few of them but found it to be a lot of work just putting it in. And it takes away from what I try to do with my videos. I appreciate you like them just like they are. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks Andy. I did have these glued up before the first tangent staves I did. I had and option of giving this the same shape or cut the pieces into thinner strips. Glad I save this one for the second. Now for something different on #3. Take care, Gary

Your glue joints are always so nice and tight. The extra time you spend on jigs and cutting the materials seem to really pay off. What a beautiful example of segmented turning. Great job ! Thank You for sharing
