There are a few things that my associate did not discuss in the video. In term of safety, you should exercise caution where you store considerable quantities of ammo. Obviously, make sure there are no fire hazards present, or that you do not store ammo in an area where if it catches fire you won't have a contained explosion. Basically, treat ammo like you would powder and primers for hand loading. One of my favorite ways to store ammo is buy those nicer plastic Rubbermaid containers and store the ammo in it's factory box inside of those containers with a silica gel packet in each one. When loading magazines with ammo for storage, especially with steel cased ammo, always wear gloves so you do not contaminate the ammo. Same goes for brass cased ammo as well. The oils and acids from your skin, depending on your body chemistry, can actually stain and corrode even brass. I hope you found this video interesting and thank you for watching. We appreciate your business.

Rotate the ammo regularly. Keeping ammo in a vehicle subjects it to both extremely hot & extremely cold temperatures and will dramatically shorten the ammo's useful life. This is also good advice for your carry ammo!

Thanks for the video/information. I think we all know what's coming, and we need to keep the ammo ready. Those zombies aren't gonna shoot themselves. I just read a guy's post that said he inherited a .50 cal. ammo can full of .45 ACP ammo. He said he knew that it had been in a garage for *at least* (10) years. He also said that he had fired about half the can without a single failure. Also, the garage was not heated, nor did it have a.c. Obviously, you wouldn't wanna store ammo like that, but it's good to know that well-manufactured ammo does have some longevity even without storing it correctly. Seriously, I do believe that things are going to get bad, real bad, and I got a feeling it's not going to be long before it happens. About 90% won't be prepared, and when they get desperate (after about 3 days), they'll be coming to steal everything you have, and *TO EAT YOU!* B-R-A-I-N-Z B-R-A-I-N-Z!! *God, Guns, and Gardens!*

I live in FL and I had 9mm ammo stored in a metal ammo can for 20 years, with no silica packs or rice or anything else inside of it. Always kept it in my air-conditioned home, and I sealed it up in the same manner. Took it out of the can and fired it, and not one single round failed. As long as you keep it dry away from moisture and as mentioned, away from high heat, it will go bang.

A small tip/ hint: I like to put a light coat of 3 in 1 oil on the seal of ammo cans because it makes them soft again, seal better and adds a little bit of longevity. Don't use WD-40 to do this because over time it eats up rubber seals.

In all fairness you do bring up a valid point about people having a lack of respect. We do agree on that. I view modern day society as a system that constrains and restricts good natured law abiding people, yet it's extreamly permissive and inept when it comes to criminals or people that don't respect others around them.

A few years back I bought 10,000 rounds of WWII .45ACP 230gr hardball that was stored in sewn shut cotton flour sacks stored in a barn hay loft since the late 1940s. Not a single rounds was ever a dud. The few stovepipes I had I figured were more attributable to my pistol than to the ammo itself.

One question I have though, as far as ammo goes, what would people consider "short term" and "long term" ??? Since that varies greatly from topic to topic. I keep all my ammo in locked cans in my house (comfy temp), but when should I look at vacuum sealing? 6 months? A year? Couple years?

A fire marshall/gun guy advocated storing ammo in military grade steel ammo cans, that he states will swell, but contain any ammo cook offs in a fire. Plastic ammo containers will burn. Also he cautioned storing any guns with round in chamber, that would allow full velocity on a cook off while rounds merely in magazine would just pop, usually splitting case, and virtually harmless.

Recently found, while cleaning up the pile of junk in the unused corner of my garage, a 50 cal ammo can full of .45acp. Believe they were stored there back in 93 about the time I gave up shooting, that would make them 20 years old, stored in an unheated garage in c. Hellinois. These were hand loads with Fed. primers, 230gr.rnl and probably Bullseye powder. Took them out this year and all worked good through my new xdm 5.25 and xds 45. Wish I could remember where I stashed the other 4 cans though

The acid in the fingers is L-serene Amino acid. Wear poly or rubber gloves when handling cases. I can get 8 boxes of 50 rounds 223/5.56 in a 50 can ammo can. I can get 1.000 rounds on stripper clips in boxes in a 50 cal ammo can. I make my own desiccant sewing a pouch that contains 2 table spoons of 100% silica jell cat litter I get from Walmart. I have Federal Premium 270 150 gr BTSP I purchased in 1980 and it's still shiny and shoots as good as new. Also, never use a plastic ammo can for long term storage. The lid can warp and deform. Metal doesn't break the seal.

I store my ammo always with a few boxes in one NATO .50BMG ammo can. In Belgium, they are sturdy, cheap, watertight and plenty avaiable (FN factory makes them). Each one gets one silica gel packet aswel. This was a great FFE!

I am in New Mexico with similar conditions except it's seldom humid here. It's really nice living in the desert. Everything from old cars to guns have far fewer issues. I have some surplus ammo I bought in the 80s that I believe to be from the mid 70s.(it was sold as Vietnam era surplus) Anyways,I just keep it in an ammo can with no special treatment. Actually,I had forgotten about it until I moved. Now I am just shooting a few a yr to see how it is doing & see how long it will last.
