Thanks for posting this. I have a 1973 Formula 400 and my lock cylinder just shit the bit. Ive built a few engines, but I have never done battle with the dreaded GM lock cylinder. Now, to find my steering wheel puller.....

Great presentation, Olds! Just went through this and for those who had trouble returning the key back to Lock position, I discovered that the middle steering column sleeve (inbetween Tilt lever and the Ignition switch) has approx 45+ degrees of play so if you turn that left or right you'll find the sweet spot to relieve the pressure that it puts on the acuator rod and allow the new cylinder lock to fall into place. This was on 76 TA.

Seems easy enough. Time to flip my 84 Camaro steering wheel back to right side up. Thanks for this tutorial!

Finally a 'How to Video' on removing the Formula wheel to replace the old stuck ignition cylinder. My 1976 Trans Am cylinder is locked the same way and I can't turn the steering wheel because of it. It's been sitting for 30 years in the same position.

Hey big fan ! Loved your shifter video . But I have a question about the flashing over the plunger . Was yours just a matter of just dragging a small flat head screwdriver over or did you need to punch through it , with a flat head and a hammer ?

Any flashing I've dealt with on GMs knocks out pretty easy.

Hey, I've taken apart my wheel assembly, I was having two problems, the ignition locking cylinder was coming out of its place, and the horn wasnt working. I think the original owner replaced the locking cylinder with the wrong one, it had a groove for a screw to retain it, but my camaro doesnt have a place for that screw. I was wondering if you would know what to do?

Are those 3 screws the one you tighten if your tilt steering wheel is loose?

Hi, I got an 1980 Trans Am, but the key stopped working in NEUTRAL not PARK. Do you know how to move the gear stick to PARK. Thanks
@Oldsmob4555 жыл бұрын
Replace the key cylinder right where she sits. If it needs to be put in park bad for some reason disconnect the shift linkage going to the steering column.

Will a bad key cylinder turn engine over but won't start. Thank you
@Oldsmob4556 жыл бұрын
If the engine is turning over and not starting you have eithe a fuel, spark or compression problem.

Oldsmob455 well it's a complete rebuild and everything is new under the hood. I drove it up to Walmart after I got my exhaust done without a problem drove great. On my way back home everything was fine until I got 2 feet from my parking place it died or stalled as if I just turned the key off. I tried starting it it run for a split second and the same cut out. Tried again nothing engine just spins with compression. 1st I checked the fuel as I knew new fuel pump great pressure. 2nd spark. I checked all plug wire's one was off from the dizzy laying on the intake correction made. 3rd try to start it nothing. Back to 2nd spark. Pulled a plug put a screwdriver in and put it on the head no spark. I changed out module-rotor button-cap-coil. Still no spark. Trigger wire has power. I stumped. I've read where a bad ignition switch can cause it not to start. Or it may be electrical. Im unsure. Thanks for your response.

My 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme I inherited from my grandfather has a similar problem, except when I turn the key to start it, it cranks but doesn't fire up, so after 3-5 seconds of turning key and no fire, I turned the key off but it doesn't obey, I turned the key to off position and pulled the key out of the ignition holding it in my hand and the engine is still cranking itself trying to start. with no key in the ignition and in the off position. I had to jump out and disconnect the battery cables so it would stop cranking itself. think it may be the starter. But I'm not sure

PhenomProductions23 Check your ignition switch. It's located and mounted on top the column. If your shifter is on the floor it could be mounted inside the console.
