3,410 REASONS TO GO TO WAR | WARBIRD, 1968 FIREBIRD!
Jack Greene / Daniel Ray '68 Firebird Warbird Nitrous making some power at FuelTech USA Hub Dyno! This car is one of the most powerful nitrous cars that crossed through FuelTech USA headquarters!
Whoever said nitrous couldn’t keep up with the boosted cars in the highest levels of door-slammer racing has never experienced today’s Godzilla-sized 5.300 bore space billet masterpieces. Recently Jack Greene and Daniel Ray brought their 1968 Pontiac Firebird to FuelTech for some checkout runs.
The result was nothing short of staggering with the nitrous-injected Pat Musi 959ci powerplant cranking out 3,410HP. Built by Robert Hayes, the Warbird has run in the 3.60s during Radial vs. The World competition while rolling on a set of Mickey Thompson ET Radial Pro tires.
The team relies on a FuelTech FT600 engine management system to keep steady control on the powerful Musi 959. It offers them integrated systems such as an LCD touchscreen on the face of the ECU. The display not only gives the driver critical live information but also allows the team to make tune changes without connecting to a laptop or PC computer.
The FT600, however, is far more than just a fancy and convenient screen. Like all PowerFT ECUs it features sequential injection and ignition, O2 closed loop, Data Logger, Delay Box, Boost Controller, and much more. The Pro-Nitrous control is renowned in the RvW, 275 Radial, and Pro Modified worlds, giving the user a set of tools for engine tuning as well as power control for record-setting performances.
The FT600 also includes GearControl, allowing the transmission shifting and lock-up functions to be integrated into the engine management system instead of requiring a separate control box. Spark power and control is critical on a nitrous engine, just like the big power boosted combinations and the FTSPARK-8 Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) is up to the challenge.
It can provide up to 600mj of energy for the spark and 125 amps of current in the coil primary. The Warbird relies on eight CDI Racing Ignition Coils, also sourced from FuelTech, to deliver that energy to each cylinder. Data acquisition is another highly touted feature of the PowerFT line of engine management systems with accelerometer, gyroscope, and the ability connect any sensor via the CAN bus system.
The information is displayed with the engine and power management data, allowing the tuner to use only the FTManager software when analyzing the information.
It streamlines the process for easy and quick changes for the next run. The Warebird also utilizes eight FuelTech WB-O2 Nanos, which are connected to the FT600 via CAN bus and without the use of an analog input. FuelTech offers Advanced Factory Training that includes the shop, Mainline hub-dyno, and FuelTech staff to help you diagnosis and troubleshoot problems before you hit the track.
The package is available by appointment only. Incredible products to help vehicles perform better and faster combined with exceptional customer service is why you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere

A lack of collector headers is costing them power. You can't beat the scavenging effect of a collector header. Fuel cars do not use it as they are still burning fuel as it exits the exhaust port, I assume. Also, considering that it's a ground-up creation, they could have prioritized the zoomie tubes over the tube chassis and eliminated the double dogleg kinks in some of the zoomie tubes, which is doing nothing to help power or consistency between cylinders.
@davelowets
@davelowets Жыл бұрын
@@exploranator There's NOTHING wrong with Zoomies at this level of an engine. This thing doesn't NEED the scavenging from a header collector. A 4-into-1 header setup with a collector, would simply hurt power on this engine. Also, those slight bends arent hurting anything either... They headers are swept up, and designed like that for a reason... The exhaust pressure puts downforce on the front of the car, to help keep it down and not end up on it's back bumper. It wouldn't do them a whole lot of good having them come straight out the side of the fender, or pointed DOWN and lifting the front of the car. If the headers came up OVER the chassis, they'd have MORE radical bends in them to end up getting them pointed in the right direction.

I begin to be more and more impressed with FuelTech. I have watched and researched the various fuel systems makers for years, and FuelTech seems to be really going for a full-on invasion. Motec, Holley, and Haltech have far, far too few data points available to really tailor the fuel injected precisely to the demands of the engine on a per-RPM basis. Hopefully Fuel Tech can have enough computer brainpower to make truly ultra-specific maps for all the points between 100 RPM increments, unlike e'rybody else. Have you ever seen, for example, the power curve of a modern F1 engine? They vary WIDELY in output in only a few RPM, and that output is not just needing to be painted with a broad brush of "I guess that's enough fuel, 'cuz 'tain't deternatin" The output of an F1 engine progresses in such an unsteady manner on a per-RPM basis that the teams are allowed to use throttle position programming to use the throttle blades to smooth out the resultant power curve, even though actual throttle-or-brakes-based traction control is banned in F1. Widely generalizing fuel delivery "cuz you's at 3000 to 3100 RPM and you shoul'n't need much differn't" is divergent from the reality of the power production of actual engines. My fervent hope is that FuelTech continues to take the other brands to school and offers a FAR finer scheme of data mapping and resultant fuel injection than is currently being offered by the other brands, whose seats seem to be made entirely of past laurel wreaths, upon which they rest, instead of being hungry to improve. They have not improved by the leaps and bounds that one would expect from established-brands engine management systems. There is not greater granularity in their fuel maps, just more gewgaws tacked onto their system so you can have the rear window wiper come on at 7000 RPM and full throttle or whatever. The fact is, at any given RPM, there are going to be more that 1-5 different levels of fuel delivery needed, due to changing vacuum or pressure. The change in airflow mass to the cylinder is FAR FAR more varied than "choose between these three levels." Example: at 5500 RPM, engine vacuum/PSI can change from near-vacuum to around, for example, 14.7 PSI. How many steps are there between those two extremes? Several thousand? Several hundred? Several dozen? Not with Motec, Haltech, and Holley. They just throw buckets of fuel at it hope it has enough to not detonate. But, established marques, there is far more to fuel delivery than "lack of detonation." If FuelTech pays attention to this and really goes after finely tuning the exact amount of fuel to the exact amount of air, you will start seeing their dyno sheets look choppy and rough in the "power curve" because that is how real engines in the real world actually operate. A power curve that changes in magnitude as smooth as a waterslide is not indicative of how engines really produce power. Do it, FuelTech. Show the world how proper data mapping and resultant fuel delivery is done.

That would be unethical when the bottles get to much pressure the solenoids will not open plus if you get trash in them they will stick open and pwm'ing the noids beats them up pretty well and cause them to no seal all the way after awhile and if one jet gets trash in it it will not only be down a hole on spray but down all together. Plus how ever much vacuum it that hole will suck.

Fuel tech needs to take all their employees to a national event with som AA fuel cars and to a Thursday/Friday night open track day so they have perspective. Maybe a weekend “interning” with a top tier team using fuel tech products.

Apples and oranges. They are tuning normal drag type cars, not fuel handgrenades.

Ted Gerstenslager not apples and oranges. More green apples and red apples. That why I said they need to experience the full range. Geo metros on street nights to national event top fuel cars. Standing mile cars. Salt flat cars. Carbed and mechanically injected cars. Their employees can’t really appreciate the power of their product without experiencing different situations. They have no reference if they’ve only happened to be in the back a few times when a car was being dyno’d.

That front "tiedown" is so super "safer", lol. Looks like 3/8" reddi-thred "set" in the concrete. Probably "bonded" in with epoxy. Equally funny is the "RWHP" numbers minus the "RW". Removing the "mass" of the wheels and tires - easily 1/3 if not more of the powertrain mass and "powertrain loss" not to mention the major source of slippage "loss" not to mention "lost" mechanical advantage of the tires over the "rollers" as the tires "grow" and the gear ratio is effectively made "higher" - can and will easily "add" horsepower "gains" proportional to the mass "loss" before the "gains" from reduced powertrain "slip" and tire growth losses are realized. The "bottle babies" and the "noss" system aka "kit" manufacturers and retailers and "tuners" they "support" and vice versa are desperately trying to sell "noss" as the "cheaper" and "easier" and "quicker" so-called "power adder" and a supposed "alternative" to "forced induction" aka "boost" and are trying every "trick" possible to do so using "dyno numbers" that mean jack squat regardless of the power adder installed if and when "RWHP" is the "metric" used for "comparison".

"This steering wheel is exceptionally light". Which is important since you may save 2 pounds over the "heavy" wheel in a real race car with 198 fewer pounds in "clean layout" wiring and electronics and that doesn't need/have 959 cubes and 5 "kits" to "compete" with cars with less than half the cubes and zero "kits".

So I'm at 4:23 and I'm thinking to myself this guy really shouldn't be speaking for fueltech.. he said things that were considering like not knowing it's a main line Dyno. Grade 8bolts eh not great at shearing loads I'd feel safer with grade 12.9 and even then I'd feel best if theres splines or a key taper something. Really he could just have not said anything and that would've gone unnoticed. All I'm saying is I like fueltech and i would like to see either some thought into the promotional vid or just show me what we came to see horsepower

It's an oxidizer, not a forced induction, it does not force any air inside, it just oxidize. That's why they're not measured in PSI. Something like 6 kits of nitrous is like equivalent to maybe 35 PSI, that why the rules allow them up to 900+CI. A 959 CI motor with a blower or twin turbo would be overkill. Also, NHRA limits the turbo size. I remember seeing that one Pro Mod car on the dyno making 6,144 HP on Hub Dyno. It has 670 CI with twin turbos I think 98mm's.
