Years ago when my kids were young. I converted a washing m as chine drum with the holes in the side to burn oak firewood. I used Steel rebar to hold the pots well above the fire. Iwe would make a fruit cobbler as a dessert for the four of us. I used the light aluminum baking pans I put two small jewelry box hinges and a clasp to keep our makeshift oven closed. This set up laster well till my kids were in their mid teens. Then was usually just my wife and I on vacation. I do enjoy your videos. And thanks for sharing Stay safe in the woods.

This was a fantastic video, it helps jump start your imagination, over the last 50 years I have used countless different kinds of gas stoves, if any thing will let you down, it is a gas stove. I am retired now on a fixed income. the cost of bulk white gas is getting up there and you have always work on them , canister gas is getting out of the question, I still use them some times in minus 25 or colder, but now I use Trangia with methyl hydrate, 3.78L for $10.00 bucks, less than the cost of one canister for a pocket rocket. plus an Ember lit stick stove the pair complement each other. I have used your dog bowel oven in the past and love them but it made me think of my Outback oven and using it with the Ember Lit stove will have to work it out. I have been experimenting with coconut briquettes/logs in the Firebox. The hexagonal logs I purchased ( Napoleon brand, seen them available in the USA and I purchased in the UK) are a bit longer/taller than the Firebox so I cut them to length, which is easy to do. I than placed 5 of these Swedish torch style in the FB stove and it's been a very successful way to use carbon neutral charcoal essentially made from a waste product. These logs do take a while to get going but a few wood wool fire starters ensure a good start and once going burn hot and long, a few hours!

Not the point of the obvious, but if you are buying wood from the kiosk, they got that wood from somewhere off the ground or cut it off of a tree. It didn't just appear. So somewhere the forest is being robbed of its resources. But they just won't let you do it.
@MarkYoungBushcraft6 ай бұрын
I understand your point. The wood that is sold is from wood lots and is kiln dried to ensure not unwanted bugs come into the park. Thanks for commenting

Wow, Mark. Great report.. The lump charcoal is very light and super easy to ignite. If you have the room in your pack it is a great choice as a fuel. Your idea of using the ash plate as a damper is ingenious. Thanks for sharing. Perhaps you need to bank a supply of dried onions for extended forays in the future (very little weight penalty there). I really liked the idea of using the parchment paper. That worked very well. That should be a standard component of your lightweight dutch oven kit. God's speed on your recovery. God bless you and yours and keep the good ideas coming....

An addendum to your Dutch Oven....... I watched an INSTRUCTABLE video this morning that suggested the use of a carbon fiber pad as a separator/insulator. The carbon fiber pad weighs almost nothing and has some advantages. The heat convection aspect for the system needs to be evaluated - it may restrict the heat flow excessively. You have some work you need to do. Hey man, we need your continued input - you have a great ability for conveying your great knowledge to the rest of the world.. I love your gentle demeanor - I pray for you. Good luck my friend - God's speed on your recovery.

Jim Ferguson ...Good to know I am still wanted...I would love to get a hold of some carbon fibre matting. I can think of a number of uses for it. It is available here at Home Depot but it is not cheap as I would have to buy a rather large "blanket". Apprenetly, it is intended for use as a welding blanket and comes in a fairly big size. Maybe I could find someone to go splits with me.Thank you for your continued support

Great video! Some food for thought; I have used charcoal as a forging fuel on and off for many years, and the study of ancient tooling and practice has always been a large part of that. What you find is that, generally, airflow is more or less provided in a fairly narrow range of flow, with the amount of fuel sometimes being used to regulate heat output. Mostly though, the fires and containers are made to be of a suitable size for the job at hand, and the fuel and air consumption rate is fairly constant. The big factor controlling heat applied to the work is either position in the fire, as in the case for forging, or distance from the fire, as in the case of cooking and other uses. Adjusting draft to control the output of a charcoal fire tends to not work very well by and large.
@MarkYoungBushcraft7 жыл бұрын

Great video Mark. I use my FireBox Stove with lump charcoal all the time. It’s my favourite stove. I don’t use the damper, I find using the damper can cause a buildup of ash. I’ve seen several of your other videos using the stainless steel dog bowls as a baking oven. I have a set of Snowpeak titanium bowls I would like to try baking with. The first set back is trying to find a pair of clips that would hold the lip of the bowl which is very narrow. Because I haven’t found any yet I haven’t tried. The next problem I might run into is whether or not the heat would transfer throughout the titanium bowls, as titanium is not a very good heat distribution metal. Have you ever tried using any type of titanium pots or bowls for baking before?
@MarkYoungBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
I have baked with titanium but it was wet baking or steam baking. It can be helpful to small (clean) rocks inside to act as a heat sink to hold and evenly distribute the heat. Hope this helps
@larryn82 жыл бұрын
@@MarkYoungBushcraft - Yes, I have used titanium bowls for wet baking before with success, I just have not tried dry baking yet. I read about someone using “pie weights”, which are made out of ceramic, for heat sink. Of course that adds pack weight if backpacking, where rocks or river stones would be more ideal.

Since you mentioned onions you might like this recipe. Make the potatoes like you did and at the same time add Italian sausages (bulk or whole, also add some green bell peppers and the onions. Also used some of your Tex mex... Excellent taste. I must try a blueberry muffin... NIce video Thanks.

Great vid and demo Mark! The firebox is certainly a versatile stove, the best IMHO. My stove obsession ended when I got both of Steve's stoves. Maybe Santa will bring you the Nano and then you can cook the sausages and the fries the same time next year! Hope your feeling better. Hi to Gina!

HI Jackie. The Nano is at the top of my wish list. I tend to pack too heavy most hikes and want to start packing a little lighter. The Nano will likley become my goto stove. I will pass on your hello to Gina. Thanks for commenting

I believe a campfire is literally a human right. None of us would be here without humans gathering some wood together and making a fire.

Great video Mark, I love that dog bowl oven! I'm going to try that. I noticed that you had a really nifty set of tongs that worked perfectly to remove the dog bowl oven, it was great how they wrapped around it. Did you make those?
@MarkYoungBushcraft6 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. Actually, I got lucky with the tongs. I picked them up at a thrift store for another project and it turned out they were perfect for this. Thanks for commenting

I like Mark's Mid-Atlantic accent. Sounds old-timey. Is this the eastern Canadian accent?
@MarkYoungBushcraft4 жыл бұрын
Funny thing is I don't hear my accent although many people comment on it. Likely because I am from Nova Scotia

Great video. What was the recipe for the muffin? Did you modify the recipe at all knowing you’d be backpack cooking ? Thanks
@MarkYoungBushcraft5 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. The muffin was from a packaged mix the brand of which I don't recall right now (maybe Betty Crocker). We prepared it according to directions, other than adding a few additional blueberries. If it had not worked out we may have considered modifying it but as you could see, it worked just fine as is. Does anything smell better than hardwood charcoal on a grill -- or firebox? I'm hungry just thinking about it. Of course in Texas where I'm from, we would be using mesquite wood. An outdoor meal cooked over an "open" fire is the absolute best. Saying Grace makes it perfect. Bless you and your channel, and prayers for continued success. Your channel is a welcome island of peace in my on-and-off internet time.

I enjoy a cooking over coals as well but when that is not possible, charcoal is the next best thing. Thank you for your kind words

what are the spacers you used?
@MarkYoungBushcraft3 жыл бұрын
By spacers I assume you mean in the dog bowl oven? Two pieces of aluminum stock cut to make crossbars. I show how to do this in my videos on making Ikea Hobo Stoves. Thanks for commenting

Great Video. Does the charcoal have to been completely white, to get the correct heat?
@MarkYoungBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I start grilling over the charcoal as soon as I see it turning white. The heat will continue to rise then start to go down. Best to keep checking to see if you need to add a bit more charcoal. Thanks for commenting

you're definitely right about waiting till near the end to add seasonings, minus salt for most things minus eggs lol, you do definitely lose some flavors when those delicate compounds get heated for too long or too high

Mark, I've done much the same (using briquettes) with my homemade hobo coffee can stove, but the idea of using a folding stove just sold me. I agree with you 100% about not using wood debris from the floor of the Prov. or Canada Park. I've seen too many examples of damage to dead & green wood by unthinking campers. This is a real alternative to bringing in gas stoves with fuel and all that entails. I also know that two burner stoves made from two coffee cans hobo stoves, sterno stoves or these folding wood burning stoves would not only be practicable, but also appeal to our "get back to nature" minimalistic approach to camping. So in the next day or so, I will go out to price & maybe buy a folding wood / charcoal burning stove. Great video.
@MarkYoungBushcraft6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. I agree charcoal, especially chunk charcoal is greatly underrated as a fuel as is wood pellets. I absolutely love my folding Firebox stove and highly recommend it to anyone who can justify the cost. Truthfully, if money was an issue for me I would be almost as happy to stay with my Ikea hobo stoves. Glad you found the video helpful and thank you for commenting
