I highly suggest a volunteer department first. Mine had a 17 yr old on it. He obviously couldn’t go on fire calls but he went on small ones and it gives you a lot of experience that way when you can go on calls you have some experience. That and it gives you a chance to gauge if it’s what you want to do and if you transition to full time you have that experience to lean on

I have complete respect for firefighting since my dad was a captain. But it's important to be clear about the ugly side of it. Firefighters tend to be first on the scene and the things they see can be traumatizing. People need to understand its not all good. The things you see can greatly effect your mental state of mind and cause ptsd. Which in turn can create stress on you and your family. You can't save everyone and some situations may hit close to home, prepare for that.

A lot of people have told me that I will want something different when I grow up and change my mind but firefighting has always stuck with me for some reason. I have goals that I'm so close on, I'll be able to support myself off of work I've done that will let me "retire" but I don't want to look back on a life that I didn't give everything I possibly could to this world. So I'll be able to volunteer, and help keep pay and resources for you but be very grounded in the community. I have a couple buddies that I'm working on convincing them to go to the academy with me, we already work together and bring great energy. It would get them moved up in their lives.

Wonderful video! To me, Firefighting is the PERFECT job for me because I tried really hard to get into IT and other things, however I just struggled there and I never had a passion for those. But for firefighting, I've had a MASSIVE passion and I really enjoy learning more about them. The 4 days on, 4 days off sounds really exhausting at first but I bet soon you will get used to it and it will be okay. I love how firefighting gives you so many days off, I would love to wake up whilst everyone is rushing to work and I have 3 days off in a row or something hahahah I will NEVER get bored of saving lives and I love that you get to know the family of the people you have rescued, I will never get tired of that Man, I really want to be a firefighter, I really wish I become one soon, vacancies are just very difficult, but once you're in. You're pretty much the happiest person haha

Ever since childhood I (like many kids) loved watching the fire engines go by. Most grow out of it..I never did. The first "real" book I read was "Report From Engine Co. 82"...(RIP Dennis Smith), when I was 8 years old (I've read it many times since). Met Dennis by chance in '86 at the offices of Firehouse magazine. Anyway, whenever I would look at images/film of the horse drawn era, I would feel "goosebumps." I always found this very profound, and powerful. I questioned it. In 1988 when living in Northampton, MA (was dispatching in Amherst for Hampshire County), I had a vivid dream of being in an 1800's firehouse, there was a classic-to-the-era looking man --handlebar mustache and all, sitting at a desk; I turned around and there was a steamer. On it's boiler was emblazoned "Philadelphia 1882"...I then recall a bell sounding, and then I was running down a cobblestone street, with a tremendous weight on my shoulders. Fast forward to 1996, I was living in Boston; I was in the Boston Public Library (Copley Square) studying for a tourguide job; I'm flipping through a book and see an image if what I believe to be that steamer from the dream. Okay Erich, now some nice people in white coats are here...just let them put this special jacket on you; they'll be bringing you to your new home...you'll love it.

I agree 100% with what you’re saying , especially the part about this job being meaningful and being recognized because the impact it has on others by what we’ve done for them. Recently I retired after being an EMT for 30 years, and even now, when people find out I was an EMT, they thank me for my service. So this ripple effect, or this aspect of it can continue even after retiring from the service, which gives me the satisfaction that I really helped to make a meaningful difference in my chosen profession. I was in the same boat knocked back on my first try lost and jaded but now I am proud to say I'm due to start the firefighter recruits course next week. This is without a doubt partly down to the detailed and comprehensive work that he does. Its also worth noting that I am from the UK not the US but the fundamentals of the information thats found on the chanel is in my experience universal. I’m 19 right now. Graduated from Navy bootcamp a month ago. When I get out in 6 years I will either be a cop or a firefighter. I’ve wanted to be in one of those careers ever since I was really young but I’m still struggling with which career to choose.

In the same damn boat as you buddy, I have my BA in CJ but I have a bunch of Fire certs and undoubtedly have more experience in the fire service than in law enforcement. I love both fields and honestly I am split between which profession to stick with permanently.

I'm 20 I've always loved firefighters and respected them, I finished school this year for Auto Technology which I also love doing but I feel I could be doing more. Which is why I've decided to return to school for a fire science program I want to be a help to people, save them and be an inspiration to people that feel like they can't do anything.....they actually can

In my area I have seen and known paid firefighters and EMT they go join a volunteer fire house also. I'm a retired volunteer firefighter of 30 + years and even tho I can no longer ride I'm active on the administration side. I wouldn't have it any other way. I've done things that I saw on emergency that I did myself. You name it I've done it. I'm extremely happy for the work I've done in my life with the fire department..

I live in a small town in upstate New York (far away from New York City) our firemen make a lot of money. $100K for the chief, $85 for the lieutenants and like $75K for the rest. They fight one or two real fires a year. The rest of the year they polish the trucks and watch TV. 💸

I realize what I haven’t had in my life is purpose, a regular job doesn’t do that for me that’s why the fire department is something I know that will give me a purpose. I like helping strangers and to risk my life for it gives me a purpose I start my first class tomorrow at 6. If it something I truly wanna build on And go for a paid career, I have to start out volunteering.

I was in highschool almost 10 years ago, And in highschool I wanted to be a graphic designer in the clothing industry and was too young to know I had potential in exactly what I knew I wanted to earn a living doing. I was too young and dumb but also my parents never really supported me and really I did not even realize they were neglectful. so I did not get a chance to continue school until I realized my life was turning into my parents life that did not go to school and never talked about getting and education or a career. I did not know my parents did not mind struggling. So I gave God an opportunity to help me because I was not a believer. Started feeling completely different. Always happy even when I'm supposed to be down. And I am now going into a career that I am creating for myself in clothing , t shirts jeans, sweats, hoodies and what ever graphic design can offer me. From wedding invitations to video and photography but I still haven't gotten in to video Thank God he found me 🙏.

Hi, I'm Daniel. I am 36 years old, been working out at gym, I live within walking distance of a fire station and currently, thinking about volunteering. I'm not going to lie.... I'm terrified and excited. The journey sounds insane, the amount of people who quit prematurely or can't hang is also a bit scary. But I think I need this..... thank you.

I'm am electrician's apprentice, and for the past year, I've found it to be rather meaningless. While I'm terrified to leave this stable job, I'm strongly considering becoming a firefighter. I've wanted to be a firefighter since I was a kid. Any thoughts?

I think you are in the same position many, many people have found themselves. That said, I would encourage you to find a way to transition into firefighting if you feel as though it would be more meaningful to you. If you can go to school on evenings/weekends, etc. It will be hard, but it can be done. In fact a guy on my crew was a union carpenter for several years before he became a firefighter/medic. It's tough, but you can certainly do it!

Do you mind if I ask you a question? I'm in the Army and I absolutely hate the redundancy of it all. Wake up, go to PT, PT for 2.5 hours. Get an hour to myself for personal hygiene/eat. Go to work and mop, sweep, strip and wax floors, buff, sit around waiting to do real training that never comes, go home at 10pm. Get home to my already asleep wife - play with my dog for an hour; shave, pack, shower again, then go to sleep to wake up and start it all over again. I work 80+ hours a week and at least 14 hours on my "weekend" all whilst making 30k... I'm tired of the amount of work I put in for the little pay and lack of family time I receive. While in, I earned my degree in Criminal Justice and Policing. For as long as I could remember, I've wanted to be a cop. However, with everything going on in today's society with law enforcement, seeing the disconnect, etc; I've decided to move passed that. I was a volunteer firefighter back in New York before I joined the Army and I loved every single second of it. Hell, I spent more time there than I did at my actual job lol. Anyways, my wife is from Massachusetts, I'm from New York. We both decided to move to Massachusetts this upcoming summer in July once I get out of the Army. I've used Google and have called countless fire departments within Massachusetts, both civil service and non civil service. I keep getting differing answers. How do I start this process considering my resume has been groomed towards law enforcement? Do you even think I have a shot? I've been told to go get EMS, EMT, and EMR certified prior to applying. And then once I'm a firefighter, become Paramedic certified and use my GI Bill to get another degree in fire science for more knowledge and pay. Any truth behind any of this? Thanks for taking the time out of your day to respond and read (if you do) - I truly appreciate it, man!

I’m commenting almost a year after this video came out. I’ve enjoyed being a volunteer firefighter and EMT for over 40 years and NEVER wanted to be a paid firefighter. I was an engineer and was paid week. Firefighting allowed me to be a black hat, driver, instructor, etc but avoided the politics and “wokism” that comes with a ‘job’. When the firehouse politics got to me, I just avoided it for a while. Always focused on serving the community.
