Considering a church is mostly empty space, that fire got going in a hurry. Fire response looks limited also, so I guess when they rolled up they figured it was a total loss and just went into containment mode and let it burn itself out?

You're damned right. Churches under construction, pallet yards, railroad tie piles, abandoned or vacant buildings just naturally and spontaneously combust when all their utilities are either disconnected or turned off and/or there is no "reasonable" source of ignition. Bakersfield, Taft, Lamont, Arvin, and other areas have had more than their share of large and suspicious fires. Unbelievable.
