Renee Sanchez says her granddaughter was locked inside her Tesla after the car battery died. She urgently called 911 and feared what could have happened if firefighters hadn't broken open the window and safely removed the little girl. Car expert Blad Fayer showed Inside Edition's Les Trent a hidden latch that will manually open the door when it's locked shut in most Tesla models. He says the placement of the hidden latches varies in different electric vehicles.

Outside the car you have access to the 12V umbilical port as they realized you wouldn't be able to open the hood to access the accessory battery if that accessory battery were dead, once the port is open you just use jumper cables or a booster pack.

You can open the door in this situation by popping off the recovery eye cover on the front bumper and applying 12 volts to the wire leads behind there. That will open the front trunk. Then pull the plastic cover inside the front trunk to access the 12 volt battery. Connect the jump starter to the 12v battery and voila, the doors will open and the car will now "start". I helped a woman in last year with this very thing. She was stranded in a Target parking lot and was all upset and I told her we could get it going. She didn't seem to believe me until I showed her in the owner's manual. I used my lithium jump starter to power the 12v to get her car started and send her on her way. As long as you keep Sentry mode on so the car doesn't sleep, you're all good. Took about 60 seconds once i started. Yeah, not great in an emergency unless you happen to have a jump starter on you.

There is more to this story. The main battery AND the 12v accessory battery don’t just die like that suddenly between you getting out of your and opening the rear door for the kiddo. The thing must have been alarming her for days that it was at a low charge, and even then, it still doesn’t make sense if she was just driving it. But yeah, once it completely and utterly dies (like the vehicle is left for three months at a shop) you can just manually open the front trunk and apply current to the accessory battery and open the door.

the hidden latch feature is pretty much useless and worthless since the grandmother is outside the vehicle with no way to access it if they put another hidden latch on the outside of the door would be more helpful tesla should think outside the car.

Lol lets be fair. That release latch is NOT hidden. It's right where the handle is LOL. Wouldnt help a baby stuck in a car however

I wonder, how many people that own gas cars have never lent it to someone, got it back with little to no gas and didn’t know until they got back in it later? This might have been what happened to the grandmother, who ever drove it last didn’t think to charge it or let her know.

That hidden latch is only in the front, there is one in the back but it requires prying panels off

Wait I’m no ev owner and never would buy one but wouldn’t it tell you how much you have left in the battery as like a regular gas powered car ?

Lol, Tesla will give enough warnings when battery is low. The news didn't say if the 12v or main battery is low?

But if you’re on the outside when the door is locked, how do you get to that little special thing?

At the front of the car, there is a circular cover, push the cover and the cover should cave in. There should be 2 wires in the hole connect the jumpstarter to the wires (there is a black and red wire) connect the black crocodile clip (or whatever it’s called) to the black wire and connect the red to the red , the frunk then opens and you can access your charger (if you keep it in the frunk)

@@3masouri But like who even gets their battery that low, esp in the Arizona heat? That's insane. She somehow used up even the reserve battery and was planning to drive it. What an idiot.

@@josephjoestar515 older models have a seperate accessory battery but the same instructions apply but then you just open the accessory cover inside the frunk and can then connect your jumper cables / booster directly to the accessory battery terminals instead of the wires in the tow eye port.
