Apologies for getting emotional, but I swear to god as a Scot this is genuinely the most infuriating thing in my life. We simply haven’t voted tory in that long, and we’re still paying the ****ing price. I’m not going to sit and say we got everything right but I don’t know how we were able to get a couple quid shoved in our pockets and made to stay in this god forsaken Union. Ultimately we can all do so much better

Austerity is so infuriating. It's completely self-defeating, but also makes it harder to rebuild afterward. We stopped building new nuclear in the late-80s early-90s. We hadn't really upgraded our national grid for a similar time, and now we're having to rely on HVDC interconnects across the coast to boost capacity instead. Rail, roads, hospitals, schools, etc have just been left stagnant on an "ah, it's doing alright for now, we don't need to build more for now" basis. But then we lose the expertise to build more infrastructure, because of the lull, where workers either retrain or move abroad. It's amazing how governments keep needing to re-learn that infrastructure work is cheapest when it is constant and becomes ridiculously expensive when it's stop-and-go. And now, the systems to _protect_ those infrastructure investments are being undermined. I'm sure it's union coordination, which is totally valid, but it says something that these guys are all saying the same thing. Homes, schools, roads, power lines, phone lines, railways, etc have been very damaged all across the island by this ridiculous defunding.
