the reason they speak Chinese on occasion is two fold. 1) in the Firefly Universe the two remaining powers on earth were the US and China and they merged to form the Alliance so you see Chinese influence in the show. 2) Speaking Chinese was Josh Wheaton's way of getting curse words passed the censors lol

I watched this first run. One of the OG fans that used to hang out on the Fox message boards and chat to the cast between episodes. I simply fell in love with it. Firefly being cancelled ripped my heart out, and it is so gratifying to see people still falling in love with this show over twenty years later. Enjoy the ride.

I'm 53 years old and saw Star Wars more than 100 times in theater during its first release in 1977-1978 by begging every adult I knew to take me with them when they went to go see it, sometimes multiple times per day. Two years later, the first of the "Expanded Universe" novels were released, with "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" (a low-budget sequel to "Star Wars" with only Luke & Leia on a single planet) and then a Han Solo trilogy by author Brian Daley. Many old-time Star Wars fans have been pining for that series to be developed for the screen - the sarcastic smuggler & his crew in a broken-down old ship just trying to scrape by. This show was everything we've been waiting for...and then... *sob*

I lived in a suburb of Sacramento and was 12 yrs when it came out. One of the local theaters, which was a four-plex, with four theaters showing different movies, had a back door that entered through a curtained foyer directly into one of the theaters, was easy to Jimmy and get open, and I literally watched practically hundreds of showings that year, often two or three in a day...😂😂😂

There are many subtle visual clues in the scenes. During the battle of serenity valley we see Mal kiss a cross he's wearing around his neck but later he's antagonistic whenever Shepherd Book mentions religion making it clear he's lost his faith.

Firefly premiered in the United States on the Fox network on September 20, 2002. By mid-December, it had averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode and was 98th in Nielsen ratings. It was canceled after 11 of the 14 produced episodes were aired. Fox aired it on Friday at 8pm. Most people didn’t watch network television on the weekends and Fox had even lower ratings than the Big Three. Typically, we’d watch Primetime shows from 8-10pm Monday through Thursday on ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX. Friday-Sunday was spent doing activities with friends, lovers and family: Movies, Clubs, Bars, Bowling, Grocery Shopping, Kids/Teens activities, Fast Food, Fancy Dinners, Coffee dates, Play dates, Crafts, Arcades, Swimming Pools, BBQs, Errands, Parties, Sleeping-in, Spa/Salon, Sports, Mall, Live Music, Family visits, etc. Monday-Friday was booked solid for families: breakfast, work, school, dinner, homework, housework, bathing, primetime tv, news, bedtime. It was a different time, I miss it. Anyway, that’s why Firefly was cancelled; they aired it on the least popular network on a Friday night. They picked up more fans with re-runs and then picked up a cult following when they added it to Netflix. Fans begged to see the crew back together again so Joss gave us Serenity. We would have loved to have seen more Firefly, it just wasn’t meant to be, unfortunately.

I finally get to watch your Firefly reactions now that they're on KZbin!! When people ask me of a list of my TV show recommendations, it's like this: Firefly is ABOVE the list. Before we get to my number #1 top recommended show, Firefly comes first, before number 1. It's required. It's one of those shows that I feel they just hit on everything--cast, writing, music, acting, everything. I don't feel it has a weakness.

Here's why it got canceled: Joss Whedon had been hugely successful with his 2 previous series Buffy the Vampire Slayer & it's spinoff Angel. As apart of his deal with Fox for Angel he was allowed to do a 3rd show of his choosing. That show was Firefly. However, the Fox Execs, particularly the VP of Programming didn't get the concept of Firefly from the beginning. But they couldn't deny it due to his contract. So instead they spent absolute bare minimum on advertising prior to 1st aire. They also didn't like Joss' pilot and ended up airing the show out of order. But Firefly wasn't a Procedural show like Star Trek. There's lots of elements and plots that get reused and/or developed. So broadcasting out of order just made it more confusing. Because of this the ratings for the show was very poor leading to the cancelation. It was canceled before the last 2 episodes were even aired even though they were In the Can already. There's a scene in episode 12 where the cast had just been informed prior to filming that scene. Someone will let you know which scene once you watch it. Despite being cut so short this show is worth watching. You won't regret having watched. The cinematography is top notch quality, the dialog is genius, and the character development is fantastic. The only negative thru the whole thing is it's cancelation. The movie Serenity began filming 18 months after the cancelation. Universal was convinced to buy the rights for the movie due to the Collector Series DVD's sold out within 24 hours of the pre-release announcement. Unfortunately due to limited knowledge of the TV show and again only a small ad campaign by Universal the movie bombed at the Box Office. It's DVD sales and Broadcasting have been huge after the fact, just like the show. Firefly's fandome has swelled by magnetudes since it first aired. Most fans today learned of it after the movie left the theaters. And that includes me, I learned about it from my brother, and now own the full set of DVD's. Along with belonging to a BrownCoats Facebook Group. (Yes, I'm old GenX and thus still use FB). Don't join any BrownCoats social media till after you watch Serenity. Otherwise you'll get hit with daily spoilers! 🤣

I loved your comment about how you couldnt believe this was the first episode. So much was happening. That was one of the big problems for the show. FOX never aired this episode till the show was already canceled. Firefly gets stronger and stronger as it goes along but without this pilot episode, it took even those of us who watched from the beginning a while to figure out just who these people were.

When this series was aired for its first run on television, in was played out of order (Episode Order = 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 1) and the last three episode never even aired due to the cancelation. The following year in the UK they started showing the series again in the CORRECT order and this time it INCLUDED episode 11, 12, & 13.

One of the best shows ever made. It was a Western drama that happened to include spaceships. Perfect cast playing fully realized characters, superbly written with dialog that is hilarious, tragic, and always grounded. No sound in space, and no aliens, just us. Incredible score and soundtrack, also. Firefly and John Doe premiered on the same night, and both got cancelled before they could finish their stories. Fox can such the stinky, worm-ridden sludge out of rotten, moldy eggs for the rest of time.

RE: "Serenity" the film v. the "Firefly" series; Without spoiling anything, there's a narrative dump in the beginning of the film which gives some backstory to why humanity is apparently in some other solar system that has many inhabitable but still being terraformed worlds. That's touched on in the TV series but there's very little reason to explain the why of it, all the characters already know why.

Fun Fact, if there's another series to look at later which captures some of the same elements of "Firefly" in a jar of its own, it's the original animated "Cowboy Bebop" plus the feature film. The episodes are short, the character sheet has less characters but the "space cowboy" aesthetic is what it's all about.

Space cowboys indeed! And Nathan Fillion, who plays the captain, went on to star in a long running series (8 seasons) on ABC called "Castle". And he or the writers or both did little tributes to Firefly in that show. And Nathon brought on most of the cast of Firefly in guest roles for Castle. Yes, they do reuse the Starship Trooper gear. There is a deleted scene from this episode available on KZbin in which Zoe explains to Simon that the aftermath of the battle of Serenity was actually worse than the battle itself. The victorious Alliance did not pick up the surrendered Independents for several weeks, leaving the wounded to die and the unwounded to starve. Zoe said that the handful that lived long enough to finally be rescued never really left Serenity. The series was cancelled in mid-season (others will give you that sordid story). This was network television, which means the season should have been 20-22 episodes, of which we only got 14. So, we don't even get the full first season of whatever Joss Whedon had in mind. The way you like the show and catch all the character interaction and humor is great to relive.

Serenity has a Terminator on board. Summer Glau (River) portrayed a Terminator on the TV Show "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (2008-2009). I found the series to be quite enjoyable and, in my opinion, the best Terminator released after T2.

Back in the 60s they always said science fiction was just a western in outer space. This show just ran with that idea. And it makes sense. The frontier, any frontier, is going to be a little rough and primitive. A mix of state of the art and whatever they can get by on. On new planets with no infrastructure a truck would not be very useful until you could produce your own fuel for it, but a horse would be just fine as long as you have something to feed it.

There is gel that the military uses to breach doors. It's more foamy looking, but it comes out like caulk and will basically use a small explosive charge to blow out the path of the gel, making it perfect for breaching enforced locks on doors or making holes in walls.

Joss Whedon said he got the idea for the show from a book he was reading about the US Civil War. He said he was reading the book when the idea of the Millennium Falcon suddely occurred to him. He thought, what if something like the South had lost a war in space. What would that look like?

Firefly was cancelled halfway into the first season. It was aired out of order and the time and day of the week it aired was changed with no notice. One episode was preempted by a sports event and only 11 of the 14 episodes shot were ever aired. This episode, which was suppose to be the pilot, was the last episode aired on tv. A year after it was cancelled DVDs came out with all the episodes in the proper order and became a cult favorite. Two years later a movie was approved called Serenity (same as this first episode). Jayne is like a big brother to Kaylee but he doesn't want anyone to know it. In my opinion Jayne's character is developed the most over the series. Your opinion about Jayne will change, then change again. Jayne is very crude when he said that Kaylee "gets all lubed up" over Simon, just like Mal is very crude when he calls Inara "whore", but neither one is wrong. Summer Glau, who played River, did the waking up scene nude. At the end of the scene she asked the cast and crew "Did the box make me look fat?". Zoe told Simon what the Reevers will do. She was wrong. Reevers much prefer to start with eating you alive. When Mal asks what Simon is doing in Inara's shuttle, Inara said she was giving Simon a "free thrust". She lied. There are many hints in every episode about storylines that were meant to be developed in the first 2 or 3 seasons. As far as the dynamic between Mal and Inara, there is indeed something there, but not what you think. Why did Inara leave Sihnon? I don't mean to give any spoilers. I only want you to know that there is a lot more going on than you can tell the first time you watch the series. Most of the time when something is said that doesn't quite make sense, it's part of a backround storyline that you don't know about. A lot of backround storyline information was revealed by Joss Whedon at Comicons and reunions after the series was cancelled. After you know all that backround information it's easier to see it in the scripts.

I think they started with the Train Robbery, which, while good, is probably my least favourite Firefly episode? The network wanted to start with more "action" apparently, but it's a confusing place to start.

13:37 Fun fact: The actress who plays Kaylee doesn't like strawberries. 32:33 No it wasn't that. Some of the suits of the network hated the show for whatever reason and did everything they could to sabotage it. They aired the episodes in the wrong order, gave them a terrible time slot, did no promotion - literally trying to kill the show. And then they cancelled it mid season. Yep, it's not even a full season, it is only 14 episodes (and a few years later they managed to make the movy Serenity that at least wraps up some of the storylines we never saw develop fully in the show). Firefly was made in a time when shows had actual seasons of proper length (= 20+ episodes) and not the crap they do these days of making 6-10 episodes and calling that a season.

Reportedly, it was cancelled during the shooting of a particular episode, so a scene in the snow was extra poignant. They'll see it when they get there.

Most of the CG was done by Zoic Studios. I know a couple people that worked on this there and got to visit them later while they were working on Battlestar Galactica.

Firefly was my gateway drug to the Buffy-verse. I bought the 7 season box set solely on the strength of one season of Firefly.
