What makes this movie great is that its entirely self-aware and over-the-top, and that's the point. The plot embraces its own absurdity, and leans into its own campy humor. Willis, Tucker, Jovovich, Oldman, Holm, and Lister as the President were well-cast in their roles.

This is one of my favorites. Anytime it's on TV, I just let it play. My favorite line is: "Uhh, negative. I am a meat popsicle." Director Luc Besson developed the Universal Language that Leeloo speaks. He started developing the story as a teenager, including the language. Milla Jovovich had to learn the language, and she could converse with Besson in that language (which probably led to their marriage later, but they divorced after a few years). The language has a dictionary of around 400 words. The Diva, Pavalaguna, was played by Besson's then-girlfriend, Maiwen Bescoe, but it was a big secret who played the role for years. No one knew until they released a special edition DVD with an extensive set of BTS features, including a documentary on the making of the movie. She did not sing the song, though. The entire thing was recorded by an Albanian soprano named Inva Mula. It was recorded in pieces. The first part was the aria "Il Dolce Suono," often called the "mad scene" from the opera Lucia Di Lammermoor by Donizetti. "The Dive Dance" was written by film composer Eric Serra and was recorded in pieces and then put together to sound complete. It was written to be unsingable. A few operatic sopranos have managed to do it in one go and post the results on KZbin. Chris Tucker was not the first choice for the role of Ruby Rhod. The late music legend Prince was first choice and wanted to play the part but had prior touring commitments that could not be changed so that he could take the role. This is why Ruby has such flamboyant costumes, designed by uber-designer Jean-Paul Gaultier. The overall production design for the film was done by two heroes of Luc Besson's. French comic book artists Jean "Moebius" Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières, whose work in the science fiction realm had inspired much of the original story as Besson created it as a teen. In particular, Jean-Claude Mézières comic Valerian and Laureline inspired The Fifth Element. Based on that comic, Besson would later make the film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) with Dale DeHaan, Cara Delevigne, and Rihanna. It's not the best, but it is fun with some fantastic visuals.

"Are you classified as human?" "Negative, I am a meat popsicle." Fun Fact: The wonder on Bruce Willis' face when the Diva (Maïwenn) sings is real. That was the first time he'd heard it and seen the actress in full make-up. Big Bada Boom Fact: The explosion in the Fhloston main hall was the largest indoor explosion ever filmed. The resulting fire almost went beyond control. It took twenty-five minutes to put out. Lost In Translation Fact: The "Divine Language" spoken by Leeloo, was invented by co-writer and director Luc Besson and further refined by Milla Jovovich, who had little trouble learning and developing it, as she was already fluent in four languages. The language had only four hundred words. He and Milla Jovovich held conversations, and wrote letters to each other in the language as practice. By the end of filming, they were able to have full conversations in this language. Bad Timing Fact: The hero, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), and the villain, Jean Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gray Oldman), never meet, nor do they communicate with each other in any way. They are aware of each other (Korben used to work for Zorg's company and Zorg knows that Korben won the contest) but they are unaware of the other's involvement in the main plot (getting the stones). The only time they appear in the same scene together is at the end when Korben flees towards Fhloston's hotel's hangar while Zorg is just returning from it. They pass but just miss one another putting them in the same shot together for just a few frames. Music Enthusiast Fact: Diva Plavalaguna (Maïwenn) sings the "Il dolce suono" aria from the opera, Lucia de Lammermoor. It is one of the most difficult arias because of its length, its soaring arpeggios, and the high F above high C. When composer Éric Serra showed soprano Inva Mula (who dubs the voice of the Diva) the sheet music for the Diva Dance, she reportedly smiled and relayed to him that some of the notes written were not humanly possible to achieve, because the human voice cannot change notes that fast. Hence, she performed the notes in isolation, one by one, as opposed to consecutively singing them all together, and they digitized the notes to fit the music. There are a few moments when you can hear the differences in the vocal tones of the Diva's voice. It has since been done for real by several singers.

Predator fact : Besson (director) started dating and grooming Maïwenn (the diva) as she was 15 and he was 31. He broke up with her and started dating Mila Jovovich(leeloo) after shooting the fifth element. I'm not concerned with seeing the nature of the wound. What explains the apparent coloration of the blood? A: The effects department opted to use molasses as a blood substitute rather than other mixtures. I can't be certain if that is cooking molasses or refined "fancy" molasses which is a good deal sweeter, but that explains the brown tone and how darkly it stains his skin. If it were chilled before being poured onto his skin, he'd warm it up and it would get runnier.

Besson was taken to court for plagiarism. He was accused to have ripped off the first segment of 1981's animated movie "Heavy Metal". It was settled out of court. You can find many shot-for-shot comparison videos here on youtube and yes, it WAS a total rip off ... especially from someone who claims he had this idea since his childhood (yeah, probably since when he saw Heavy Metal on VHS). The animation was done by celebrity comic artist Richard Corben ... and Besson named his main protagonist (who was just a cabbie in 1984) "Corben Dallas". If you think this might all be a coincidence then you will probably be surprised that he got accused again in 2012 by no other than John Carpenter himself this time for his movie "Lock Out" for having totally ripped off Carpenter's 1981 masterpiece "Escape From New York". Carpenter wasn't after the money so he refused to settle out of court. Besson got indicted AND found guilty of plagiarism by French courts. That, plus the open secret about how Besson treats all his lead actresses (aka you don't starr in a Besson movie if you don't become his cocubine). He's in some sort the French Harvey Weinstein. This unfortunately taints all his movies, same as Polanski and others.

Also RIP to Tommy "Tiny" Lister as well, who played Debo in Friday which also starred Chris Tucker. He was The President in this movie.

One of my favorite sci-fi movies. It's just so over the top yet is engaging. Gary Goldman is such a terrific actor, his variety of characters portrayed is so vast. Here he is as Zorg, he was Dracula, then Winston Churchill....brilliant. The character lineup is not what anyone would come up with in the traditional sense lol. All the side stories intertwined perfectly & with the characters as well. You asked for other sci-fi films with special effects, here's my #1 suggestion; "Metropolis". Don't let the fact it's a silent film from 1927 scare you away. It's absolutely fantastic & the effects are mesmerizing. Additionally, it poses a great thought-provoking storyline as well. Hope you consider it. Enjoying your channel, you have some very good commentary.

D. Luc Besson conceived this when he at School as escapism from his traumatic loneliness at Highschool! He wrote the Screenplay when he was 16! Finally completing the movie when he was 38! The Opera Singer who dubbed the Diva Dance song said it was impossible to sing some of the notes together as the human voice cannot change so fast and so high, so she had sing some notes in isolation and then they were edited together. I'm a huge fan, but I just discovered these facts myself a video short that popped up after watching this reaction! 😂❤

Those bits of trivia, along with many others, have long been easily accessed on a certain database site for movies.

30:39 All of the notes sung by the vocalist in the Diva Dance are real. Some of the notes were impossible for a human to quickly switch between, so those impossible notes were recorded individually, then assembled using computers.

Fun thing is, Corben never meets the bad guy. And savor all movies with Bruce Willis, he retired because of dementia.

If you love practical effects, I recommend "Event Horizon". Best Sci-fi horror imho, though it suffered somewhat due to production issues.

If you liked this space opera you should watch the film Valerian by the same director Luc Besson. It's even more space opera and a bit more serious.

Normally I would identify this as my favorite Luc Besson film although I recognize it isn't necessarily super hard-core science fiction. It was certainly a departure from "Leon The Professional", and while there's plenty of films he's written, directed or produced since "Fifth Element" I haven't been as captivated by them with one exception, "District 13" (2004) AKA "Banlieue 13".

La Femme Nikita I consider to be his magnum opus imo. But some of his other early films Le Dernier Combat, Subway and The Big Blue are also good. His later stuff after The Fifth Element though are still good, with some exceptions whether or not he wrote, directed, produced or all of the above.

Most reactors are traumatized by Evil Dead 1 and never get to relish in the ridiculous 3 stooges humor of part 2 and 3. They’re loads of fun! Part 2 dark and cheesy humor & part 3 is mostly cheesy humor. Hell It’s worth the watch if only for the practical effects!

Many of the secondary and tertiary characters are played by famous fashion models of the day; costume design is from Jean Paul Gaultier.

What "The Mummy" did for Adventure-Movies, this did the same Thing to SciFi-Movies. It brought Fun to the Genre and became an absolute 90s-Classic. One of my most watched Movies ever ... never get's boring. Chris Tucker is Gold in this ... or better said: Chris Tucker is Green in this

Hiya Maplenuts! Fellow Canadian, here! As Canadians, it would be fitting for you to react to a series that is shot in Canada, right? ;-] And since you made a point of mentioning that you are both big fans of sci-fi and special FX, this is right up your alley. The show is "The Expanse" - A six season masterclass in modern storytelling. It is based on a series of novels, and the authors are involved throughout all six seasons. The show had been called 'Game of Thrones in space' by many... that's how intricate the worldbuilding is. And the space effects are second to none! (Trust me, I've been watching science fiction for over 60 years, so when I tell you this is second to none, I really mean it.) The series is not for the faint of heart, and because it is so well made, it has little left in the budget for superfluous stuff like explaining things before they happen -- no hand-holding here, so your full attention is required. The first season is a developing mystery, as it builds a most believable world around you. And for the second and third seasons, I highly recommend you have your chairs fitted with seatbelts! ;-] The writing, the acting, the production values... everything coming together to make you feel for the future.
