This is arguably my least favorite episode, so everything after is better. I have severe issues with this being the 26th century, but these people are in the 18th century for no reason. One of the few reaction channels not to recognize baby Zac Efron in his acting debut as young Simon. Oh, wait, now you found him. Summer Glau's acting debut was on Angel as a ballet dancer, as that was her pre-acting trade. "He seems like a good father." Um...I just think that the parents are obsessed with parents are obsessed with status. Only a doctor would be dressed that nice? "She reads minds and spins falsehoods." It's one or the other. There may be a few plotholes in this.

I love the scene when River quickly learned all the local dance steps from simple observation and within minutes became the center of attention as she was innovating new dance moves. As another commentor already posted, the Hill Folk were ease dropping in the bushes and overheard Mal call Simon 'Doctor'. I'm glad you guys understood why Mal left Simon & River behind to search for later. Finding them would take time that Shepherd Book didn't have. We can speculate that Mal's military background taught him guerilla war tactics (like how to hide in the hills). The Hill Folk are good at evading the townsfolk = similar tactics. This factored into why Mal knew there wasn't enough time to search for Simon. Probably also factored into why Mal was able to find Simon & River as quickly as he did when the townsfolk can never seem to find the Hill Folk. "Daddy will come and take us home" Daddy = Mal, Home = Serenity. I believe that is why River never panicked when being caught by the hill folk in the first place. Here we get a hint that she not only reads minds, but can tell the future as well. "Time to go" - River says this to Simon moments before we see Serenity show up. Unlike the Tam parents, who were angry about bailing Simon out - Mal is willing to come back to get Simon & River when they are in trouble. The problem with the Tam's parents = They have been indoctrinated by Fascism. In their eyes, River is safe because the Alliance knows what is best for all of us. Everyone must follow the rules without question. No one wants black marks on their social records. Why Simon doesn't understand this is very frustrating to the Tam Parents. At the very end, we see the crew sitting down to dinner like a family. Dinner always looks good after a successfully paid mission. Simon holds a chair out for Kaylee, who smiles at him. He is forgiven. Meanwhile, River purposefully sits next to Jayne and steals a dinner roll off his plate - forcing him to get another. Was River perhaps punishing Jayne for stealing Simon's money earlier? As for your joke about Jayne wearing one of Simon's silk shirts - I doubt Jayne would be caught dead in a "pansy rich boy" shirt, even if it could fit him.

As someone who has loved Firefly for a really long time, I would recommend that you keep with the current pace of reviewing one episode per week. There are a finite number of episodes, and then the movie, but then that's it. There's no more. So, let yourselves enjoy the newness of it as long as you can. It's definitely worth rewatching; I can't tell you how many times I've rewatched the series over the years, but you only get to watch it for the first time once.

Others have already written about River learning the dance right then and there, but I wanted to add in that movement/dance is considered one of the many different kinds of intelligences that people can have, so her being able to have such grace and to be able to pick up moves so quickly is the same as another person being good at math. Another thing that I have seen already is that Summer was a trained ballet dancer. The first time Joss used her on one of his shows was as a Russian Ballerina on Angel. She also attends a ballet class on an episode of the Sarah Connor Chronicles (one of my all time favorite shows from this era)! Some people say River's feet are actually their own character on Firefly! Look at how she used them while walking barefoot onto the ship that had been taken over by Reavers and tell me otherwise!

Kaylee is still interested in Simon. Just for starters, she knows that he wasn't deliberately insulting her taste; he had no idea that she was considering buying that plate for him. She's hurt, but she isn't angry. Simon has a veritable gift for putting his foot in his mouth around Kaylee, and most of the time he doesn't even know he's done it.

Also Badger (the british guy from Shindig and the pilot episode) is Mark Sheppard who is kind of a geek icon because hes had reoccurring roles in Supernatural, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Leverage, along with guest roles amongst so many other great shows

@Mikey Please guys after you finish this show consider picking up Battlestar Galactica. It's an amazing show both in terms of storytelling and all aspects of writing ( dialogues, layered characters, storylines ), has really good CGI and an amazing soundtrack. The only show that ever came close to it for me was The Expanse. Its dark, its gritty and doesnt pull any punches when it comes to telling a good story. 5 seasons, + 2 movies. Very high quality scifi. Also in my opinion its Katee Sackhoff's breakout role, and she killed it really hard. I myself never been a Star Trek fan that universe is just too pristine for me and the characters are pretty much role models. I prefer people with flaws its just feels more real that way and BSG is outstanding in that department. :) Anyways, great vid as usual Firefly/Serenity is amazing I rewatch it once a year. Such fun. :)

@@732ReviewCrew I have this controvertial opinion that BSG is the best sci-fi show ever. :) Lots of people sleeping on it from the newer generation but it is amazing. You only have to watch the pilot and you are hooked and 100% along for the ride. I'm glad you guys are considering it, its amazing and it did change sci-fi TV for the better. Those were the fun times, it ran alongside SG-1 and SGA ( Stargate ) so we've got an episode of all three of those on every weekend. :) Glad you guys are considering it.

I feel like you guys missed a couple things based on your discussion. The first and most important was you never discussed the whole point of this episode. There was a past-present parallel story arc going on that you didn't acknowledge. In the past Simon finds out about River being in jeopardy and of all the people he should be able to go to for help and support, his parents, he only finds judgement and abandonment. In the present, he and River are back in what turns out to be an even more dangerous situation and the people who he just met and have what is considered to be a questionable moral code, come back for them and show him loyalty. That was the whole point of that conversation Simon had with Mal at the end where he is asking him why they came back for him and River. It was because Simon's life experiences had taught him that he couldn't rely on others to help him. The second thing I want to point out is that in your speculation about who Shepherd Book could have been in the Alliance, you were speculating he may have been a high rank in the military. However, in the "Train Job" episode Book was very aware not only of who Adelai Niska was but also of his reputation which is why he advised that they were better off being late for the meeting with Niska rather than showing up and telling him they left behind someone in the hands of The Alliance who could testify as to Niska's involvement. I always felt even high-ranking government / military officials would not have that kind of intimate knowledge of the criminal underworld so my assumption was he may have been more on the intelligence side.

Disney XD was my "Gravity Falls" source, so it was time "get physical media." I had bought the "Firefly" DVD set, then loaned it to my brother-in-law. (It wasn't returned.) These days, "there is nothing worth watching despite hundreds of cable TV channels," so "Firefly" cruises the 'verse whenever I WANT it to. "Safe" is an interesting episode, and superior to Fox TV's "Krapopolis."

Gravity Falls is so good! Is there any connection between the shows?
@Otokichi786

@@732ReviewCrew "Gravity Falls"has been described as "The X-Files/Twin Peaks" for kids, so I don;t see a connection. However, a casual look at "Cowboy Bebop" and "Outlaw Star" would be revealing.;)

"as it aired"?! if you want the true experience, roll a dice, to ramdomize the order and take two of them out to never be watched at all, then wait 2-3 years to watch the movie. jokes aside, I do like the speed, once a week. Myself, I binged the entire series in one sitting when I got my hands on it. It's that good.

@davidbergfors6820

@@732ReviewCrew well if you want the "real experience as it aired" you will have to watch the episodes out of order. And also watch it at different times as the studio movet it around in time slots, and that first episode ("serenity") never aired. The Whole thing is a mess.

I think the reason why River plays dumb and playful when she basically captures herself is because she is so incredibly intelligent and prescient. She acts childlike to avoid early suspicion and seem non-threatening, making sure she and Simon are in the same place to be rescued.

"Why are the parents just ignoring the sister now?" Hmm... You may know that Joss Whedon has a problem with blood families, especially fathers. If you look at his work, fathers rarely if ever look good, and mothers only about 1/2 of the time. I think he said once that he believes in the family that you choose (= Serenity's crew) rather than in the one you're born in.

Stupid question (probably): Don't you have full reactions? I checked the description, I checked your channels "About" page, I searched on Patreon - nothing?! I would support you on Patreon (because of Firefly) but it seems like you are the only reaction channel without full reactions... Am I blind? (Don't get me wrong, the editing is great, but more would be better and definitely worth the usual $5 a month...)

We aren't at that point yet! We have some steps we personally need to do prior to this including some things to setup for tax purposes, like an llc, as we all work full time jobs(if we didn't it would all go under my income so we have to do it correctly.) We would like to provide you with full lengths soon, they're available and I will release them! Just currently not yet. Soon we hope, we didn't want to jump the gun. We also were afraid being "greedy" would scare some people away . Also thank you, I edit all our videos and I learned to edit this year. It's tough! Your kind words mean a lot. -Mikey.

Not the most action packed episode, but important when it comes to character development. Personally I like the dancing scene the most, which provides brilliant contrast between pure joy and criminal activity. It is a Western show in space, but for a while it turned almost into a Warhammer 40k show - "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live". Sadly we learn much about background of Shepherd Book. Unfortunately if I am not mistaken that comes only in a comic book which clearly was supposed to be an episode of Firefly and it would be really, really great. I like how Kaylee spoke about the duck-swan - in such an optimistic way which really suits the show and the character. Though if you have not read about the Lion of Gripsholm Castle you might want to BTW. Different circumstances, but somehow similar outcome. Take care!
