One of my favorite things about a semi-hollow body (aside from jazz) is Alex Lifeson’s use of them on the early Rush albums. If you’ve seen any of the early promo films (videos) for Fly By Night, Alex is rocking a Gibson (I believe) 330. So cool. These guitars rock hard when you need it. They’re great.

Max, I bought the red one 18 months ago because you completely sold me! I have never expected such a lovely instrument when I opened the box. I immediately decided to invest some $$ in it, getting a fret job to take the grit off the edges, replacing the nut and tuning keys and having the action lowered. I spent another $185 on it so it would mimic my Country Gentleman which has seen playing time 4x per week since 1977. I wanted a similar playing experience whilst the CG was in the hands of my lutier.i expected the hiatus to be lengthy, as in several months. The gift that my CG brings is the most beautiful neck/playing action on earth! When my lutier gave me the FIREFLY back, he actually replicated that action to within 90% and I called him to tell him to take his time. Ì LOVE MY EARLY FIREFLY AND I HAVE YOU TO THANK FOR IT! I'm tempted to keep buying the brand in every model! Keep up the great videos. Oh... my lutier restored my Gtresch COUNTRY GENTLEMAN to 90%. And I am playing it at church on c e again. So ye old FIREFLY is keeping me busy at home. I'm a fan for life. Btw, I've been playing since 1963 &I'm still excited about learning new things to practice.

I received mine Sept 30th, paid the old price ($149) GREAT out of the box! I put flat strings on it (I like flat strings better in general) made very minor adjustments to to it and I think it plays better than my Dot.! Very fun to play. With new strings have under $170 into it.

I want to give you massive kudos. I bought a firefly hollow body because of your reviews. I changed out the chrome for nickel, replaced the tuners with hipshots, put in SD Pearly Gates pups, toyed with the looks so I can tell mine on a wall and I am beyond pleased. Like you said, the body detail makes it worth the price alone. The sound out of the box was great, but the Pearly's allow her to go from elegant jazz to bluesy b*tch with ease. Thanks again for all you do. Keep up the great work. Many of us appreciate your efforts.

My Spalted FF338 just came in today and I love! The tuners are not horrible and I was surprised that it came with some nice D'Addario strings that feel new. I'm most likely going to replace the tuners with locking ones and replace the bridge with a roller saddle bridge. So far no tuning issues and I love bending strings. I might replace the pickups with some GFS pro series alnico 2 pickups because those sound pretty nice.

Nice review Max! I received my spalted maple topped FF338 about 5 days before your video came out. I was impressed overall with the guitar. Mine had a small finish issue on the side (looked like maybe the finish got overheated when polished or an impurity was there, but all in all it was better than I thought it would be when it arrived. The finish is really excellent..the binding, front and back and along the neck is done well. Bottom line...this guitar plays really well. Thin C style 60'S neck takes a little getting used to from an LP, but the first hour went by effortlessly. I have a set of Gibson PAF's...but I'm getting into her own sound and tone, so well see. Impressive guitar, regardless of price. The Firefly holds its own easily with the Epi. I don't want to use price as a determining factor with guys guitar, there are those on other sites that are selling them for more than what I played, that are still worth what they are asking for. This guitar is a joy to play...plain and simple.

Subscribed for the safety gear haha. Have watched a few of your vids and they're much appreciated! I picked up the FFLPS Silver Burst a few months ago (12/2021) and it didn't require much setup out of the box except minor intonation/pickup height adjustments. The neck feels great, and unlike some other reviews I've seen, my binding color(cream) is consistent all around. The pickups don't seem to be microphonic either, as some others have reported. And aside from the amazing playability and feel, the finish is way too pretty for the price. Definitely would recommend and I'm tempted to pick up another model! Would love to see you review the newer Aerosonic!

Max, I love my 338 from last November, but the pickups squeal like Ned Beatty with that much gain. Firefly keeps tabs on issues and makes adjustments between runs, so it's great to hear about wax potting. I have the LP and the TL as well. Fun to tinker on and work out some bugs.

I have a 338 from the same run... if you have the technical ability despiser the pickup covers. You don’t have to completely remove the pickups there is enough slack in the wires. After I took my chrome covers off the squeal went away completely. You can also try adjusting the poles sometimes the squeal if the cover vibrating on one of the pole pieces.

Mine is a little older than yours, and it squeals like a banshee. I know how to wax pot the pickups, but the bigger problem is that it's neck heavy: it neck dives badly. It's a shame, because it's well made and a bargain at the price.

It's that mahogany center block that gives this guitar such a warm sound. A few of my guitars have the mahogany center block and they really have the edge over those with the maple or spruce center blocks, when it comes to a warm full-throated overdrive sound.

Max, the center block is maple. Ceramic pickups and tuners have been upgraded to Jin-Ho (Wilkinson style). The binding goes around the headstock on this one, a little nicer than the red one. Overall I agree, great guitar, especially as a mod platform, easily upgraded.

Well... After watching this vid, and many others from Max, I ordered and received the Spaulded Maple Es-339. Took a little over a week by UPS to get from California to Upstate NY. I opened the box...My god, what a gorgeous guitar. No flaws...nothing. after visually going over it, it was a little out of tune and a little high on the bridge. Tuned it...let get set on the stand over night, and got busy.the next morning. What a wonderful guitar to play. Side by side to my Epiphone ES-335 Pro, there are some slight differences. The Epi is just a hair and I mean a hair heavier. Both come in at just over 6.5 lbs. The Epi has the Probuckers which are very full and lively, and frankly, the Firefly isn't far behind. Slight tweaks in the mix, and she's there. No buzz, may slightly have to relief the neck slightly, we'll see when I lower the action a bit. But I think I'm good. After running thru about 1hr playing, from Inxs to AC/DC to Rush, stayed in tune pretty well

I own a $1000+ Gibson but I really enjoy finding bargain bin guitars!! It's like a side hobby for me. So far I've found an Ibanez grx20w for $150 , a Squier bullet mustang for $130 and a Kramer Beretta special for $200. For the price imo these guitars are gems! I bought one, but it was one of the few guitars i had buyers remorse over. Had to replace the pickups on it, because they were very microphonic. I wanted to gig with it, but that ment spending a bunch of money to put better hardware in it. After adding up all the parts i wanted to make it reliable, i could have gotten an Ibanez artcore. But i will say, selling it was rather easy. I listed it for sale, and had cash in hand, in less than an hour.

Looks great and sound great.👍 I have a FF338 from a year ago in ice tea burst. I had to change the pickups mine were not wax potted and were microphonic, my bridge buzzed so I changed that and I changed the tuners and had to do a complete setup including truss rod adjustment, fixing the nut slots, levelling the frets and string change. Sounds and plays pretty good now. A lot of people buy these as a modding platform. Good bones. The new one you got appears to be better than mine in the quality control department. I’m glad Firefly have improved an already pretty good guitar.

Great looking finish on that Firefly. I guess I'm just an old traditionalist when it comes to the shape of the horns. I really do prefer the original 338 horn shape. Also, big fan of how nice the cherry color on the first gen semi-hollows were. I notice now that Firefly doesn't have cherry offered on their website.

I had a bad experience with a Firefly 338 about a month ago. First of all I didn't check out the finish close enough. I ordered the Iced tea sunburst and I hated it. But the guitar I got I think was an older model. It was really unplayable. There may have been some twist in the neck also. The most discus ting thing about the guitar was after playing it for a short while my hand was covered with black grimey soot. It seems like someone dyed the fret board and failed to wipe off any excess dye. Looking at the fretboard , no wood grain could be seen. The guitar was bad enough that I will never try another Firefly. I hope most who buy these have good experiences.

Finally found some that were available and still at $139 from Hong Kong and got a Blue Burst in April 2021 it's in excellent condition too! great review as always Max.. is that a fretboard gouge in the 3rd fret under the B string?.. kind of showed up during your playout.. looks great.. good platform for mods or practice such as changing wiring in those horrible F holes.. or practice making a bone nut.. thats what I do with mine.. I had a 2019 Golftop. Couldn't get the neck to stop moving all over the place. After upgrading the the bridge & tuning keys to locking, it improved some, but that neck...sold it, got most of my $$ back. Hope this is considerably better...?!?

Just checked out the Firefly 338 with the new finish that you are showing. ALMOST bought it but ended up buying the Firefly Les Paul instead. Very cool, inexpensive guitars! For anyone looking to buy a Firefly Les Paul or 338, goto Guitar Garden.

@Rob Torres I want a Wolf as well but I'm cheap lol I have a Firefly 338 in the red finish. They are nice guitars for the money. Pickups are a little weak and it will definitely need to be set up but hard to complain at the price point.

I can’t speak for Firefly but I have an Ibanez AG95D I’ve had for maybe 10 years and it’s one of my favorite guitars to play and the bubinga wood and overall aesthetic is a work of art. Some people complain about the bridge but I’ve had no trouble. Minor tuning stability issues but nothing a $10 graph tech nut didn’t fix. For reference I also have an old cheap Peavey strat style, Wolf KLP semi hollow, Gibson Les Paul DC Pro Custom shop, and an Ibanez acoustic/electric.
