FINALLY got around to seeing the show at the behest of my wife. Absolutely despicable that Fox canceled the show. It really is one of the top 3 sci-fi shows of all time. Just fantastic.

Serenity, Firefly, loved them. So sad it was discontinued. I loved all the characters of this show.

OMG, that's right! I remember noticing that they all "spoke" Mandarin, and thinking "Wow, something really important must have happened on Earth to explain that." Turns out the show was 20 years ahead of its time.

Fox doesn't give anything a chance,Cheers for example was near bottom of the ratings in its first year but NBC stuck with it and it became a classic

Like others have said, it was a combination of timing and the network they put it on that caused Firefly's demise. Had it aired a decade earlier, or even now a decade later, it probably would have survived. Granted nowadays it'd have to be on a specialty channel like HBO or AMC, like Hamster pointed out, but it could have easily thrived in those places. It unfortunately aired during a time when people were more interested in not thinking, than they were in watching intelligent TV dramas.

Of course it was cancelled. Commercial television is not the place to find quality programming - competition is too fierce. That's one of the oldest truths of the modern age. It was great while it lasted - thanks Joss, thanks Tim.

BUT we now have Halo 3: ODST which has a DISTINCT Firefly tang to it. Never mind the fact that the main actors consist of Nathan, Allan and Adam who are basicaly straight copies of thier characters from Firefly.

My ultimate hope is that one day someone finds the right cast for a spiritual remake, or a continuation of the universe through the eyes of another crew. I won't dare to wish for a complete return to force that disregards the events of the movie and brings back the original cast - though that would be amazing.

That's what I'm hoping. Maybe The Operative character from Serenity will be the new Shepherd in the continuation of the universe. The new crew will run into the old crew. Like the Star Trek TNG crew running into Star Trek Original crew.

The sad fact of all this is that is wouldn't take shit to continue on with the remaining cast. (Story-wise that is). But the drive, support, & the investors ability to stay the hell out of the way, would be the key factors here. Fingers crossed! (Would love to be part of that... were I an actor that is).

Just listened to what Chris Buchanan said about why FOX cancelled the initial pilot; can you believe how sexist FOX is?! "The men didn't respond as strongly as they thought they would, and the women responded more strongly." That's a f***ing plot point! It's what makes up the Wash/Zoe dynamic -- she's the warrior, the soldier, and he's the joker, the stay-at-home pilot. FOX wanted knights in shining armour and damsels in distress, and that's not what Firefly delivers because it is REALISTIC.

The show had terrible ratings. The movie bombed. The show is fantastic and has a following, it just wasn't big enough, Unfortunately, show business is a business that needs to make money - and "Firefly" didn't, and neither did "Serenity". The truth is that the majority of people in America are just not the type of audience the show was for. The show was too smart. It would have survived in the '90's, but not in the early 2000's, when reality TV was the rage among audiences. It was the timing.

If it had been on the syfy channel and had more of a plausible explanaition for the western half of the show, I think the show would of had more of a chance at survival. Of course, Battlestar would have stolen the spotlight eventually. Great show though

Yeah I heard, not surprising it had terrible ratings. Season one was good, but two not really.
