Here in Glasgow Scotland in the 1970’s the Religious Education teacher Mr Jackson took the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme pupils to the local fire station, Yorkhill, for a visit. They were being shown around and when they were came to the fire pole Tam Flood ran up shoving everyone out the way saying me first, me first and proceeded to jump onto the pole head pointed down and slid down the pole whacking his head off the ground. Mr Jackson said the whole fire station was in stitches of laughter.

That's not a good technique......Using your hands to brake can result in slipping and burning your hands causing you to let go. If you're wearing sleeves wrap the crook of your arm around the pole and pull at your wrist with your free hand to brake. It works great and is much safer that way. Take it from me, I've slid fire poles hundreds of times :) FDNY Retired

Pretty sure it was F.E. Warren AFB…if it wasn’t that, it was Cheyenne regional airport.
