I love that you add that sound effect when a text segment appears on screen. Sometimes I have this on while I do dishes, or other chores, and it alerts me so I know to *look* instead of just listening! I wish more channels would do that! Thank you!

I'm very likely also of Spanish or Portuguese ancestry quite far back, as I'm partially Italian but have a name that starts with "de" and not "di," and "de" is not Italian. Regardless, I'm very advanced in Spanish and love the Reconquista history, so I love this stuff regardless!

Brits and Spanish did have more points in common when we start looking deeper in history... Sadly, when you decided to cut ties with Rome the relations really went south maybe too much and even out of proportion at times... Hope we can get along better and reconcile some historical issues. As for England/Britain place in european culture we tend to think that, just as her iconic climate conditions, it is kind of a mysterious land of seclusion and mist... also doing her own thing. The fact that you travel the world out of that "secrecy" is also an oddity of history (I guess that is your norman/viking component playing out)

The Spanish Empire was not a colonial empire such as the English, French or Dutch, but on the contrary, it was the last empire of the ancient type, closer to what Rome or Greece were. 300-400 years of domain based on miscegenation, alphabetization and conversion of different peoples; construction of universities, cathedrals and cities worldwide; a huge cultural and artistic explotion; deliberation of new phylisophic, teologic and juridic debates in human history (like f.e., if all humans were equal); discoverments that changed the conception of the world; opening of new shipping routes; creation of an undefeated infantry for 2 centuries; expansion of the Hispanic culture throughout the Atlantic and Pacific ocean (called "the spanish lake" at that time) as Rome did throughout the Mediterranean... All of this, in a world as big as the one we know today, but using a technology from 5 centuries ago. From there onward, european empires had a colonial model based on mercantilism, slavery, and large-scale production, creating factories or plantations in overseas possessions, instead of a civilizing reproduction of their society. The former were a global market, the latter a global kingdom. European empires shouldnt be generalized by the fact of having overseas territories, because not all of them were the same.

While you couch it in cozy language and are whitewashing the hell out of this, you have a point; Spanish colonialism different from Portuguese, English or French colonialism in some ways. That being said Japan tried to do the exact same thing to the various peoples of the far east during its imperial age, and we had to invent the most destructive weapon ever manufactured to stop them. Regardless of how gently or zealously you r*pe a nation, or regardless of the tools employed to supplant their culture, your still r*ping it.

I rarely comment one videos, but I want to say how much I appreciate these videos. They are organized, in-depth, but comprehensive. You maintain attention to detail, you keep things moving, and you do not try to sell me the content--you trust I am interested enough in the content to be needless of elaborate and foolish attempts to make things more entertaining. This is educational, honest, and fulfilling. How's that for a comment--beat that suckers

Chicano/Mexican here and I have much respect for Spain. It’s amazing to know where our ancestors come from and how their cultures are still prevalent in today’s society. My mom’s fam are from Guadalajara Jalisco on my grandma’s side and Huitzila Zacatecas from my grandpas, heavy Spanish influence without a doubt. That also explains my fluorescent skin color if you saw me haha, soy uno de esos güeros 😂 My pop and his fam are all from Leon Guanajuato mainly of indigenous descent but very much has spanish background coursing through their veins. The ancient Guamare, an offshoot group of the Chichimeca, had an amazing Civilization similar to the Mexica (Aztecs). At the end todos nosotros somos hispanos o latinos. Viva Latinoamérica y España cabrones! 🇪🇸 🇲🇽.

@@jandron94 Spain in the XVIII century was the largest empire in the world, it is impossible for it to be off the radar. The reason that Spain is not considered historically is thanks to the Black Legend, a political and psychological weapon that was used by Spain's northern European rivals in order to demonize the Spanish Empire, its people and culture, minimize Spanish discoveries and achievements, and counteract its influence and power in world affairs. Historian Charles Gibson described it as "the accumulated tradition of propaganda and Hispanophobia according to which the Spanish Empire is considered cruel, intolerant, degenerate, exploitative and sanctimonious above reality".

To add a couple of notes : - Before the Iberians, between the 12th century and the 5th century BC, on the south coast of the Iberian Peninsula, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river existed a Civilization called Tartessos, who where influenced by the Phoenicians and later by the Greek who were stablished in the Eastern Coast of the peninsula. - When the romans first arrived to Spain, apart from the Vacones in the northern part, there were 3 more tribes in the basque territories, in today's Cantabria there where the Cantabri, in today's Asturias there where the Astures who formed the kingdom of Asturias after some centuries, and in today's Galicia. After de Cantabrian wars (29-19 BC), all the tribes of the North, except the vascones, disappeared. - In today's Portugal, there where the Lusitanians, where influenced by the celts like the tribes of the north, and fought against the carthaginians (208-201 BC) and the romans (193 - 139 BC) - When the arabics invaded Spain, the northern part of Spain, except Galicia remained uninvaded
