@kyomademon4535 жыл бұрын
mostly because Black legend spread by the english and dutch, also the reconquista wasnt a 700 year period of war, its period was more precisely from the fall of the visigothic kingdom up to the fall of the caliphate of Cordoba, with the Almoravids in the middle ending with the battle of navas de tolosa, after that the only thing left was Granada which was a vassal state of Castilla

It took the Romans 200 years after the fall of Hannibal and Carthage to conquer and subdue the tribes in Iberia and Romanize the region. (except for the North) yet we hardly hear about that either. It's always Romans vs Gaul, Germania and Britannia.

It is good to see history but still these people seem to strategically pick our history apart with every channel, show, movie or commentary on our histories. Lots of personal bias and the typical English propaganda bs that runs rampant here of trying to always criticize our histories every step of the way. It is cutting lots of accuracy out and time to dedicate to valuable historical facts and events to know about and more leaving a dehumanizing distaste. N.duero river valley is not an "arid wasteland" hahaha... some parts might have some arid stuff in it, but it is not actually truly what he described. We like these documentaries because we do not see much else, we got to research and truly make our own.

As the Spaniard adage goes "Spain is Asturias and the rest is conquered Land." This is the reason why even the modern day Spanish royalty enshrines itself with tittles such as the Prince or Princess of Asturias. As someone of heavy Asturian blood, from the geographical backwater that it is, where mountains that once had ore and were hydraulically mined to the ground millennia ago, this video does some justice.
@FlashPointHx4 жыл бұрын
It was the last stronghold and from that small enclave the rest was retaken . . . in time. I've read sources where the later kings and queens of Navarre / Castile / Aragon / Portugal would trace their lineage and legitimacy not just to Asturias but to the Visigoth. In fact, it was this justification that lead to the attempted conquest of North Africa, which was once in Visigoth possession

Very happy to find this; the Reconquista was a major part of my independent college experience for me. I've had to learn Spanish in school since I was 5 but I never liked it until I linked linguistics to geography, culture, and history. I taught myself Portuguese too and recognized the Reconquista as the birth of the modern world; had it not been for the Reconquista our world today would not exist. It was not Spain, but Portugal, that began it all, but Spain truly brought the world together. There are about 800 castles in Castile because the region was a buffer between the 2 sides so all settlements became heavily fortified, some taken by the other faction just a few miles away in a game of constant take, lose, and retake of strongholds for 300 years. Its not true that Castile was a desert back then. In fact it was a forest. More like Riverland of Game Of Thrones. It got transformed into a desert when Castile became a maritime empire, so they ended up chopping all trees to make ships, ¿Remember the Armada?. The Cid poem talks about "the forest of Corpes", where now you see just one tree every few miles on a completely flat wasteland. No wonder the showdown scene from "the good the bad and the ugly" was filmed in Castile.

Sure they chopped plenty of trees for the Spanish Armada, but I have my doubts concerning the Castilian forest. I had also heard about the ancient forests, but I suspect it's a bit of a myth. The climate is dry and with very high and very low temperatures, not ideal for forests and even less for oak (the wood you need for building ships), which grows in the green Cantabrian strip (modern day Asturias, Cantabria and Basque country) and mountain areas in the Iberian range, but not in the Castilian dry plains.

whoever put this together ... thank you.. whatever happened happened ... I like the straightforward manner in which you presented the material and bravo on the graphics too! The presentation was mainly on the battles and such ... perhaps at another time he can present the things that the moors brought to Spain .... however, the inherent danger in that is that it can become a merry-go-round of who did this and that or who invented such and such... This was a straight forward approach on the battles and beginnings of the Reconquista period....

Do a special on the Spanish conquest of Muslim Philippines. When the Spanish conquered the Philippines via moving from Mexico, they once again encountered Muslims. There was a worldwide Ottoman-Hapsburg conflict during the era of Iberian Union when Spain and Portugal was united, and all their colonies across the world were engaged in a global Christian-Muslim conflict led by the Ottoman Turks who even had territory in Indonesia (Sultanate of Aceh). @@htoodoh5770 Kings in Feudal Europe weren't as powerful as one may think. They heavily relied on the feudal lords, and many times those lords could be as powerful, if not more powerful, than some kings. They owed the land, the serfdom was under their control, and made taxation over commerce, more than actual kingdoms themselves. The explanation here is that the count of Barcelona wasn't officially a kingdom, but he had a lot of power, as much as the king. It was the richest county, and the count of Barcelona owed most of that wealth.

How do you pick topics for videos? I have an idea for a video/series that doesn't seem covered in the current spread of youtube animated history channels, based around steppe riders throughout history from the spread of technology and religion across the steppe, the creation of the spoked wheel, trade with great bronze age empires, through to the Scythians, Huns, Mongols, Turks and the empires and cultural centres they created like Sassarkand. The great pasture of the Steppe made it the greatest invasion route for nomadic people's right up to the gunpowder age, toppled many empires and if we look back far enough to the domestication of the horse, possibly the first use of stirrups. The Kurgans that still stretch from the Donbass valley in Ukraine to the borders of China fascinate me. Anyway maybe something interesting to piece together.

I pick items that are a bit out of my comfort zone. The current video you are watching is Episode 9 - if you go back to Epi 1, I explained bit more about where I came up with the concept of this video series. The way we studied this in Spain was that it was the invasion of the Almoravid invasion, and shortly after the Almohads, and shortly after the collapse of the unity of the muslim kingdom with the Taifas small kingdoms that marked the very beginning of the end. Ther Navas the Tolosa battle only meant the march south and impossibility of these taifas to reunify again to face the christian kingdoms, that at this point were more united (they were because they could share the spoils of conquests because of the collapse of Al-Andalus: Castile would take the centre-south of the Peninsula whereas Aragon would take the coast lines of Valencia, Alicante and Balear Islands, Navarre was the smallest and could fuck off later to be invaded by Castile after all muslim kingdoms dissapeared).

The Reconquista was a pivotal chapter in medieval history, spanning over 700 years of conflict and cultural transformation in the Iberian Peninsula. This documentary brilliantly showcases the key moments, battles, and figures that shaped the Christian kingdoms' quest to reclaim lands from Muslim rule. A fascinating deep dive into one of the most important and complex periods of European history!
@Freedomfighter66772 ай бұрын
Ah, the Reconquista: a “pivotal chapter” in medieval history-because who doesn’t love a good 700-year-long game of tug-of-war? This documentary must really know how to spice up that conflict and cultural transformation. I mean, nothing screams “complex history” like a glorified highlight reel of key moments, battles, and figures. Forget nuance; let’s just slap some epic music over a montage of knights and castles and call it a day! And really, how refreshing to see the Christian kingdoms’ “quest to reclaim lands” framed like they were on a heroic treasure hunt! It’s not like there were centuries of political intrigue, backstabbing, and, oh I don’t know, a whole lot of bloodshed involved. But who needs those pesky details when you can have an inspiring soundtrack and some dramatic reenactments, right? This deep dive into the Reconquista is basically a history class for those who skipped the reading and just want the SparkNotes version. It’s like a history buffet where they serve only the highlights, leaving out the messy bits. So, grab your popcorn, folks, and prepare to be dazzled by the “most important” chapter that conveniently overlooks all the chaos, complexity, and contradictions! What a ride!
