I'm part French and Dutch. I would probably still be living in France today but France didn't want Huguenots so my family left for the Netherlands in 1567 when the second civil war started. My ancestors were from Normandy and were of the nobility.They came to America in 1653 sailing on the Bonte Koe. My great grandfathers worked for the Dutch West India Company. One was Magistrate of Haarlem and the other was Peter Stuyvesant's adjutant. They were wealthy men. One owned 5000 acres in Bergen County in New Jersey the other was the founder of Woodbury New Jersey. France lost a fortune in trade when all of its merchants and tradesmen left. They took the leather, glove, millinery, gold and silver smithing (Faberge and Revere and others) to other countries which got richer while France got poorer.

Yay another great documentary! You should do the Scandinavian countries next! When people say the French are a nation that surrenders, and loses a lot of wars need to check Frances score card. They have won a lot more than they have lost, and this “French surrendering meme” that’s going around is kind of pointless. You simply can’t judge a nations entire history on one battle in 1940, which most “Americans” do anyway. They’re like any nation and have had its fair share of losses, but it’s not to the extent that people make it out to be. The French have always had a top grade army and military. It’s simply poor and ineffective leadership at certain times that plagued its military from conducting effective campaigns and wars.
@stevenmoore46125 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly! America and others shame Germany so much with what happened during the holocaust. We simply need to look at ourselves for a minute a realize that we murdered over 20 million native peoples, and enslaved millions of Africans, but as of everything negative the so called “good guy” allied nations due it’s simply swept under the rug. Just like stalins regime that killed over 20 million of his own people, but nobody cares about that. Or the British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese empires murdering millions of native peoples around the world, but yet again it’s ignored, and all focus still to this day just hammers at what Germany did in the Second World War.

@Hardy Harhar The Americans arrived in 1917, they had to be trained for months and equiped (by the French) before being sent to the front and they only really participated to the allied operations from september 1918 and often under french command. The idea that WW1 was won by or thanks to the US soldiers while the French were cowering up somewhere is video game revisionism. France bore the absolute brunt of the war effort in WW1. In 1919 it was obvious for everyone that the french army had won the war, at what cost is another story.

Caiã Wlodarski Literally worthless metrics. HDI is higher in the US than in some Nordic countries. A ”big economy” being somehow inherently good is such a stupid argument. Yeah dude China is such a great place to live like in comparison to Iceland because the economy is bigger in size, right? And the bigger army just means there are a ton of people. That too is a retarded argument. What these ”reactionaries” are referring to is the ethnic demographics turning into a new Brazil and French citizenship becoming as valued as a Walmart membership card.
@sebrands5 жыл бұрын
Caiã Wlodarski Well uhh... I don’t know, can you find a metric which proves they make it better? LMAO
@sebrands5 жыл бұрын
Florian A. No, I’ve never heard anyone say that migrants are what caused the ”downfall” of France on the global stage. People just argue that these migrants are an economic encumberance on the nation. The fall from global hegemony happened before the migrants. What these people do argue however, is that overall France has lost what it once had. No global hegemony anymore, decline in tradition and the lost respect for the nation itself. And also just to clarify, we can’t see the stats on France due to the laws prohibiting them but the migrants in Europe, generally, are negative in almost every metric you can find. In most situations the immigrants from Africa and the Middle East have an unemployment rate of over 50%. In some cases like Somalis it’s around 70-80%, the latter in my country of Finland. We’ve spent millions in these integration programs and improved their employment rates by about 2-5%. In crimes they are overrepresented to a staggering degree, like being 30% of rapes while being 5% of the population. The amount of migrants in Finland increased dramatically in 2015, and since then I’ve seen surveillance cameras pop up in the cities like mushrooms after a rainy autumn day. It has been a massive economic strain for us to beef up security services and policing just because of them, basically.

William the conqueror conquered england. Robert Guiscard conquered southern italy. Hugues de Payens founded knight templar. Daniel Montbars pioneered in North America. Richelieu, mazarrin and louis 14 made france the greatest power in europe. Louis 14 even strengthened control in north america and indian continent. The bourbons sent soldiers and money to help George Washington fight against the british. Napoleon made france great again. Napoleon 3 rebuilt colonial empire overseas (it was also 2nd largest after british empire). France suffered the most casualties and fought some of the bloodiest battles during ww1. But ppl just focused on ww2. Even during ww2 resistance in france never stopped. De gaule also fought overseas with free french forces...

More French died fighting for Germany in ww2 they were some of last in Berlin.
@nicolasmassoulier61162 жыл бұрын
@@Shawn-fy2hrShawn Not true. 100 000 French soldiers were killed during the German invasion of 1940. And you could add to the count the many French soldiers who died during the rest of WWII when they fight in Germany with Leclerc. And never forget Eisenhower who said (it's in his book) that the help of the free French forces during the D. day was of paramount importance, and save the lives of thousand of America and English and Canadian soldiers (never forger the Canadians who fight with so much courage). Eisenhower said that without this help, the day could have been more destructive for the soldiers. The free French manage to break the rail lines of the Germans so they could'nt sending troops to help, and this among others actions like informartions about he germans move's help a lot americains and all the allies soldiers. I know about the people you talk, those who fight for the germans. Very few people, and among them were pimps, thift, hothead and a bunch of fascist. They were traitors for the french and they were sentenced to death for this exact reason. They chose to fight with the SS, the worst evil people on earth. But, thank's god, they were only very few. And writing as you do that they were more french with the the germans than french in the army with the allies it's just completly false. Ask to your history teacher or to anibody who really know the story of WWII. But there is no need to argue: Russians, Americans and English: they all agree when they decide that France was also one of the winners of the WWII. That's why France has a sector of Berlin under his control. There were French judges at Nuremberg and France have a seat with America, USSR, Chine, England at the ONU security council. 5 places only and one for France... Do you really think that all those things were accorded to France only because all of the people were true francophile? At this time, history was alive and well known and all those people know that France had played a major part. Of course, without the heroism of England (great country! for a moment, england was the only one against Hitler ! for me, this is the greatest country in WWII, because of Churchill and beacause of the english people) and, moreover, without the great help of America, France will have been destroyed by the nazi. And even if i hate Staline, i couldn forget the sacrifice of the russian people, because more than the others country they have paid the blood price. But to said the truth, for most of the french, the face of liberty was american. The idea thar some kids from Alabama, Tennessee, Georgie and so many states, came here and give their life for the safe of a country they never heard about is so strong, so touching...I dont have the rigth words. I wouldn’t give Louis the Pious such a minor role in history. Yes, he was not a warrior at heart, but he was determined to keep the state intact with its force. Before being Emperor, he had already seized Barcelona from the Umayyads as a commander. As Emperor, he would reform the army and the navy, plus consolidating the vast empire instead of renewed campaign, which was a necessity by this point. The birth of a new son, Charles (later known as “the Bald”), created tension between Louis’ sons. Before, they were mostly content with their inheritance, but this new brother was seen as a breaking of the status quo (a concern for the titles they would receive), which lead to their rebellion. Initially, Louis had the upper hand as a commander and as the emperor himself. Most of the population supported him, and the infighting between his sons never really allowed them to agree on the outcomes of war. Eventually, they were successful, forcing Louis to abdicate. However, again, infighting ensued and he was able to regain his throne through treachery between his sons (Louis the German would switch sides and honor his father, allowing him to regain the throne again). He dealt major defeats to his disobedient sons in the end, but due to his pious nature (especially towards his family, though not to rebellious common nobleman, as he was quite cruel in nature for such things), he spared his sons on all occasions. Due to this, and the fact that they were definitely not in a militarily advantageous state as before, submitted to their father and obeyed all commands afterwards, never to rebel again. Louis the Pious, though known for the many crisis that occurred during his reign, stabilized the internal structure of the country, kept his rivals at bay, and led the country to notable victories for the time. Also, he was, just as his father Charlemagne, recognized as Emperor, as he had requested to be crowned after he gained the throne.

All their badass warriors died or went to England. The ones that died led to them not breeding... leading to a weak French nation of the last century. USA should take note, as we are having our strongest killed in war.

Trey Hocker do you know that you are an ignorant morron ? France OWNS the highest number of overseas Territories of all EU countries in all 7 seas from the Caribbean to the Pacific and French is the official language of 29 countries do you think that a weak country would have expanded itself like this ??? You american think you are invincible but it's not the case you surrendered to the Japanese in 1941 in the Philippines, you lost in Vietnam because it became a communist country, you lost to the Taliban in Afghanistan they are still there and your president G.Bush lied to the rest of the world in 2003 for the illegal attack of Irak. You should show more respect to France in 1815 the French army under Napoleon took Moscow forcing the Russian to burn their own city but you are so ignorant and proud of it that you probably didn't know everything I said.
@franctokyo59815 жыл бұрын
@DeathSeller Exactly, the French President J.Chirac had the guts to say NO to US imperialism and the illegal invasion of Irak because there wasn't any mass destruction weapons despite what G.Bush said ! If France is a week surrendering country I really wonder why the US even bothered to ask our help and why they got so pissed off when we refused. LoL

@@Siegbert85 you forgot that France encouraged the unification of Italy and italians, germans copied french nationalism that was centuries old and incarnated itself in the revolution. I am French and I know very well we created most of our problems, we were the most powerful after Charlequin. Though, you're wrong to think others didn't intefere with our inner affairs. Protestants, hollanders, british, a few spaniards and the vatican were involve a lot in our inner affairs.

Be "ethnically fench", honestly, doesn't make any sense. Being French is not a matter of race, because there is not such thing as a french race. We are a mix of celtic, latin, german's people and of many other people too. Being french is a matter of language, culture, history...

Even after the monarchy started to refer to themselves as "french" instead of franks they still saw the frankish kings as their predecessor and a lot of early France's identity was built on everything surrounding Clovis so it seems pretty logical to start with Clovis if you want to really explain where the identity of the nation comes from.
