So sorry, I forgot to mention how I fastened the mantel to the wall.. In this case, I put one screw kinda diagonal through the back part of the shelf, into the wall. This was just to hold it for the photoshoot. For ours in the living room, I put a few screws in the flat side boards, into the wall. I was able to paint over the holes. If you dont want screw holes showing, I would suggest using my method with the one in the video, and just adding a few more screws, through the shelf and into the wall..that way, you could hide the holes with decorations..hope this makes sense!

@@yzolakitchi that does sound nice. Do you do it yourself and do you have old wood too? I would never have thot it would come together so well. @yzolakitchi4 жыл бұрын
@@mumstheword8851 I wish I had a good timber supply, it can get quite costly here in the UK. I like up-cycling though, so may salvage some wooden picture frames, plaques, chopping boards..lol, whatever is budget friendly, available and hackable 😁 I guess your hubby will have his hands full but is such a lovely project. It is simpler to construct than I would have imagined based on Mary's finished item, she really is super talented! Good luck with your new mantle 👍

Can't thank you enough for giving us ideas and encouragement to "do-it-ourselves". We own a sawmill company in New England and I love seeing the saw marks in the wooden pieces you used. There are many family owned sawmills in the U.S. that are a great place to find scraps of old/new wood or pallets to make projects such as these. I even bet that if they mention that they watch your KZbin channel they'd give them a "deal"!

I am making a faux fireplace as we speak. I watched so many videos and they were mostly trying to or actually making them look custom & professional, which made me feel a little inadequate. I've spent so much money on wood from HD trying to mimic these people. But it's not me. If I knew you had a tutorial, I would've watched yours first. You're my girl! I have to get back to it but Idk where to go from here. Unfortunately, I'm an overthinker while you just jump in and get her done. I admire you. Thanks for this video.

Mary, I just finished making a faux fireplace after watching & rewatching your video until I felt confident to build my own. I used a footboard from a 3/4 old bed for the board across the front of the fireplace. It has a decorative carving. The rails I cut down to use for the vertical sides. The mantel top is a piece from the bottom of the footrail which had saw marks so I left it in its orginal varnish. For the inside of the fireplace, I went to the dollar store & bought 6 fake tin stick-on squares which I attached to cardboard to fit inside the fireplace. Painted it looks like tin. Thank you for sharing your process with us. It only took a few hours and turned out beautiful.
