Cody's lab once managed to get a thunderous explosion out of thermite made with copper oxide rather than iron oxide. It seems to burn about as fast as black powder and gets hot enough for some of the copper released in the reaction to become vapour. I would advise that experiments with copper thermite are confined to small amounts in small containers. But what about a "race" between a trail of iron thermite and a trail of copper thermite, to see how much faster the copper thermite burns?

Could u try some experiments using this version of thermite and the version using the black (dark) iron oxide? I’ve heard that the red iron oxide powder makes the reaction happen much faster, but if u use the dark stuff, you get a slower burn and more Molten steel produced in the reaction and I believe it will produce much more heat

I remember an episode of one of the SCI shows, I think Miami, where a guy who'd watched a bunch of bank robbery movies decided to do it himself. It was the now infamous movie heist scene of drilling or burning into the safe, and then using water and explosives to blow the safe open with hydro-static shock. It plays out the whole thing including him getting away with it, and then jump cuts back to the room just after the explosion, and him dead having been pinned to the wall and cut in half by the door when it was blown off... Super dark, but something I would be super scared of having happen doing this sort of thing in person.

Here's a tip for thermite: it doesn't really burn ceramic. So if you want to focus it on something like a safe, put one of those big ceramic flowerpots with a hole in the bottom on top of it and fill it with thermite. Thay way it should burn a hole through it as it's focused nicely.
