In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive safely into Noumea, New Caledonia, but we have quite the scare on arrival. Our engine room started to puff out smoke and upon inspection a serious fire was smouldering. With quick thinking from Bonita, we isolated the energy source and controlled a very serious situation from turning even worse. We decide to relax for a day and enjoy the fact we had arrived after 9 days at sea before tackling the issues on Nandji. This time was wise and allowed us to think clearly and work through the damage and resolve all the issues! With that being done, it was time to enjoy this little slice of paradise. It is off to fulfill a few dreams and make them reality!

Yosh and Bonita. DITTO, bob smith below. 😊👍👌 So happy the 'motor thingy' was inexpensively repaired and, more importantly, you made a decision to keep up your spirits and just take a break. As far as sailing Nandji, there is nothing more warm than Bonita's smile in the midst of problems. So encouraging to us and to you, Yosh, you for sure !! Happy you are making time to have some fun. YEAH !! 😊👍👌⛵️⚓️⛵️⚓️

Thanks Richard, taking some time was the best thing for us I think. Attempting to fix and resolve issues when still stressed and tired will not work well. Our decision to relax and take a break was a good idea and resulted well. I learnt from the passage and swinging around the mast that taking a step back and thinking about the issue is a better solution then going in guns blazing! Cheers mate

I have worked on electrical equipment for years including lots of cars and a few boats. Your logic of the heavier cable coming loose and that overloading the alternator cables is completely logical!! You are quite blessed that it didn't burn out your alternator. Much success to you! :)

Glad your fire though scary, didn't do any serious harm. This is a why I personally always say to myself in my head when doing any kind of electrical connection, " loose wires start fires!" and once i have made a good connection I tighten it just extra and give it a steady pull just to test it is really secure and the wire is sound.

One Aussie surfer/sailor to another...... Ive surfed allover the SW Pacific as inspiration to my sailing.... Been to New Cal 3 times surfing... arguably some of the most consistant and best waves ive found are very close to you now... that says a lot.... I spent 17 days straight at Big Left.... St Vincents passe... Ile Tenia... and the right breaks well also.... check it , it's only a couple of hours sail north of Noumea... and theres plenty more along that stretch.... These days I'm based in NZ... repairing inflatables by day.. always in touch with the cruising community.... looking forward to seeing more of your adventures... they remind me so much of our own trials during our 10 years of Pacific wandering.... Discovering the inital cause of the problem and fixing that issue should cause it to not happen again. I know prevention is better then cure, but unfortunately there is no fuse inline for the battery connections direct to the starter. That would need to be one big mumma fuse!
