In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we had to return to Noumea for yet more repairs to Nandji, hopefully they will be the last ones for quite some time!! We head into the marina and have to remove the forestay and furler. We had to replace the forestay in a foreign country which was good fun. We really need to learn a bit more french to succeed over here haha It is all part of the adventure!!
Whilst at the marina, we were lucky enough to cross paths with the greatest of all time solo sailor, Jon Sanders. This man is an absolute legend. He is currently on the last legs of completing his 10th circumnavigation at the young age of 78. He sailed solo and unassisted non stop around the world twice. Then he thought, I can beat that and went and sailed around the world non stop three times!!! what a man!! When we asked him how he did it, he shrugged it off! This man has sailed around cape horn 5 times! The only thing he had to complain about was that the floor boards get thrown around went knocked down and you loose your winch handles. What a legend!!

You made the comment “Lucky Bonita was here,” and “One tick to Bonita”. Dude you are lucky she is there all the time. She is not only, skilled, capable, beautiful, smart, strong, thoughtful, confident, beautiful, hardworking, insightful, caring, and beautiful, but she obviously LOVES you, and did I say she is beautiful. DUDE, you are the luckiest man on earth, “I Reckon”. Having an easy life is not having a better life. You two keep living well and loving each other.

Jon is inspiration to all younger sailors (which basically categorizes almost all sailors based on his age). It would be interesting to hear Jon's comments regarding diet and fitness on his long distance sails, and in everyday life so we can all inspire to be sailing like he does at 78 :)

Cheers guys, your spirit of adventure, and willingness to overcome any difficulties they come your way with a smile and a laugh is awesome. I have followed Jon's latest circumnavigation. He definitely is a true sailing legend, and his boat (S&S 39), is a true classic. Would have been pretty amazing to have had the chance to chat with him, I can imagine.

Great video Bonita and Yos. You guys always amaze me how you sort out your technical problems, like getting the sleeves of your furler apart and fixing things on the dock...although that is not always the best practice because when things drop they tend to roll in the drink. I dunked my portable hand drill that way...bye-bye... plus several tools and bolts and nuts. I recommend that you take it to shore, find a clean area of pavement or cement to work on. In any case you managed to get everything fixed up. Your meeting with Jon Sanders was fortuitous. I hope you were able to pick his brain about key things that will make your adventure safer and more fun a long the way. Keep on sailing with fair winds. I love your videos because I get to live vicariously through them thanks to you guys. All the best. - Wm.

Yep, I have definately lost my fair share of tools to the drink. I pulled the furler apart on land so we would not lose anything, but it had o built on the dock because of its length! Lucky we did not lose anything this time around!! We picked his brain over and over haha we picked up some nifty little tips that he uses! He is a legend.

You might have been able to avoid taking the furler tube apart by using a Norseman or other similar compression fitting you install yourself on the lower end of the forestay in lieu of a swaged fitting. This works on some furling systems but maybe not all. Really enjoy the channel.

Kudos to John. He is a legend. Bernard Moitessier sailed 37,000 nautical miles, 1.5 times around the world in 1968 without ANY electronic navigation. Think about that for the GOAT?. Read "The Long Way" by Moitessier, you will be amazed what those guys went through. Pure adventure. Pure sailing. Aloha!

Fantastic video! Actually meeting John,wow. I don't think he saw the meaning of the word "back" exactly as you do. I think to him back meant back to sea. For you it's back to land. You may have confused the issue. If at all possible please tell me the mfr and length of his boat. Thanks for posting the great video mates.

Nouméa was a huge naval base in WW2 and critical to supply limes, as well as the security of Australia's west coast. Did you see any evidence of the base? That large knoll behind you in the start of your videos appears in a lot of period photos. Find us some more WW2... You're right there.

We will do some more research into that when we are back in Noumea! We wanted to leave the city as quick as we could, we did not take the time to look around much as we wanted to explore. Once Nandji was ready, we left as quick as we could!! we will be back to stock up again before we head off so will take the time to look more into the history. Thanks Captain!

@FrothLyfeSailingNandji

We like the hydrovane as it less bulkier to hang on the back of Nandji. That is what we are leaning towards at the moment. Any thoughts?
@kevinbaerg
@kevinbaerg 7 жыл бұрын
I installed a #Hydrovane on Blue and it performed very well on our trip from Seattle to San Francisco! Looking forward to a heck of a lot more sailing miles with "Heidi" doing the heavy lifting! It really does "just work." Not only that, but it is an emergency rudder also (obviously as long is it isn't taken out by the same thing that would take out your main rudder). And, you lock your main rudder in place while the Hydrovane is working - so it means a lot less wear and tear on your main steering system. It works great offset from center too. Anyway, we just had Will and Sarah from Hydrovane aboard (they just sailed to SF from Vancouver) and I am going to tell them about you - perhaps some kind of sponsorship can be worked out? Maybe you're already talking?! Love your sweet, authentic channel! Go Nandji!
