The NAB is the translation used for Mass , I myself have many translations and study them all. This is a good Bible especially the one with the Doctrinal inserts and the Rosary embossed on the back cover.all that matters is that someone has picked up a Bible and is reading it.

The NABRE is used in the lectionary and English translation of the liturgy of the hours. It is also used in some African dioceses.

The Liturgy of the Hours uses the original 1970 version of the NAB, while the Lectionary uses the 1970 Old Testament and the 1986 revised New Testament. As of 2024, the NABRE Old Testament is not in used at all.

@@carlose4314 The NAB New Testament was revised in 1986, after the Divine Office was published. The second revision of the New Testament is supposed to appear in 2025 or so. Then the revised Office and Lectionary will be brought into conformity with the latest NABRE. I know the changes are confusing. Who can keep up?

The Spanish version of the Jerusalem Bible is pretty common among Spanish-speaking Catholics.

Always interesting to see different translation s. From what I've seen the NAB has some very sceptical (some would say "liberal") notes, especially on the Old Testament. I think most conservative/traditional catholics stick with the Douay rheims or the catholic versions of the RSV, NRSV, or ESV

NAB is an outdated version of the current NABRE. The “RE” for Revised Edition. Which has a completely revised Old Testament. The style of which, I think, is greatly improved. They’re currently working on revising the New Testament. The final NABRE should be out in the next couple of years. As for the notes, people are so whiny about the notes because they’re not really theological commentary or doctrinal study notes So if you expect to learn about Catholicism this isn’t gonna help 😂 the notes tend to be scholarly biblical exegesis.

You should read that dogmatic constitution on Divine Revelation in the beginning! It's really beautiful! It will give you the Catholic understanding of our view on scripture. Cause some like to say we dont value scripture or know it or something. I would not read the study notes on the bottoms of the chapters cause some of that is not even remotely Catholic or faithful to the scriptures. Some of the notes are good but I would just either not read them or read them knowing that that is not necessarily the Catholic view.

@@RustyBibles I have the same question. Its multiple Bible scholars some good some not. The approval from the Bishops is on the translation not on the notes as far as I understand it. So I dont know why they let those comments in there. To find truly Catholic commentary we do have options Ignatius Catholic study Bible (that's just new testament) Didache Bible and Haydock Bible. So praise the Lord there are solid options.

The NAB was replaced by the NABRE, and it's being replaced by the New Catholic Bible (which looks a lot more promising). For verses, you can't have a set set of verses. John 1.1 works for Jehovah's Witnesses, because denying the Trinity is a big issue for them. Different translations have different areas that are sketchy. For instance, the Douay-Rheims translates "repent" as "do penance." This is because of the underlying Vulgate, but that's a pretty sketchy translation if we take Greek into consideration. It's a translation made by a pre-Vatican II Roman Catholic Church. The NIV translates flesh as "sinful nature" in several places and has a very slanted approach to "tradition" (always "tradition" when bad and "teaching" or some other thing when good). It's an Evangelical translation and so these views are fairly important. The ESV treats the curse of Eve that her desire would be "contrary to" her husband. It was made with a specific theology of men and women in mind. In none of these places would having a set of verses you look at reveal their sketchiness. You have to look up about the translators and tailor-fit it to find the sketchiness.

The New Catholic Bible by Catholic Book Publishing is an entirely different translation not connected with the NABRE and so is not a replacement. The NABRE New Testament is currently being revised to complete the revision under the “NABRE” name.
