Mastering is the easiest part of song production. It’s just limiting and compressing with minor eq adjustments to make it as loud as can be. Mixing is where one should put all their focus in.

I often say that mixing is an essential part of the creative process. That's where a lot of the "magic" in a track happens, and it's not as straight forward as mastering. Mastering is more about doing the final polishing and corrections. :)

I’m learning the whole process myself. From recording to mixing to mastering. One question: when mixing, is it better to mix everything at a low level? Keep everything under -12db on your master bus.
@FireWalkMusic3 жыл бұрын
It's generally best to mix quiet. That way you don't go above 0 dB on the master as you keep adding more channels. Check out my gain staging tutorial, as well as my mixing tutorial on how to get the e levels right, where I explain this in more detail. :)

damn I had been debating on using a service like that for awhile
@FireWalkMusic4 жыл бұрын
Services like that will always provide random results in my experience. Some times it ends up sounding very good, but other times it actually ends up making things sound worse.. The algorithms behind those services basically just compares the frequencies and energy in your track to other similar tracks in it's library, and then attempts to master it in such a way that it has similar levels. If your track has too much bass compared to the references, then it will likely take some out. This can work well some of the time, but not always. There's no substitute for a well trained human ear. A machine can't really judge what sounds good or not. It's just acting on a set of pre-programmed rules. I recommend either learning how to master yourself, or use an engineer to have it mastered.

@snowflakes23043 жыл бұрын
Hi Firewalk. Thanks for this short and straight to the Point Tutorial :) Got a little "Problem". When I do a final Master, in comparison to already releases tracks, there is still not enough loudness, but the meters already peak arround 0db. No chance to get over this limit without getting this "overcompression" Sound Effect out. Do you know how to fix this Issue? :)

Sometimes you want the main bus compression to alter the sound a lot, not just subtly. Still leave that part up to the mastering engineer? Why?

Hi thanks for the info I have a question are there any requirements for the pre-master if you intend to upload to streaming sites like Soundcloud? I know different sites have different compression. One more thing would it be possible for you to do a tutorial on how to get a Trance climax/drop fuller/powerful, my issues is my intros keep their power and breakdowns sound quite full but when it comes to my climax/drop my leads and plucks lose power. Thanks again for the videos and info.
@FireWalkMusic4 жыл бұрын
Soundcloud uses a rather terrible compression unfortunately, so it's important to leave enough headroom, and make sure that the track is not too squashed, or it will tend to sound like broken glass, with a lot of artifacts etc. I recommend making a separate master for soundcloud which is more dynamic with more headroom. A proper premaster will already have plenty of headroom and a good dynamic range, in which case it can be uploaded as it is.

Very helpful tutorials. Can I ask a question? During mixing & mastering track, should I use FL Limiter for every each sound used in the whole track or it's totally fine to use it once at last as a master for a whole track? Or maybe Maximus is good enough without using limiter for mixing - mastering ? Good videos, lot of useful infos!

Thanks, glad you like the videos. You don't have to use a limiter on every track. :)

@@FireWalkMusic Thanks for a quick reply!! I have seen lately a mixing & mastering video tutorial on YT where says that Limiter should be used separately for a each of the sound used in the whole track for best results. I always thought that we use it in final stage like Mastering.
@FireWalkMusic3 жыл бұрын
@@cooles9142 There's a lot of videos on KZbin and unfortunately some of it can be a bit misleading. The only reason to use a limiter on any individual track is if you have a submix for example, or a lot of processing causing slight clipping. In most cases you should be mixing fairly quiet, and in that case there is absolutely no use for a limiter on each track. If you need a limiter on every individual track then that means you are mixing way too loud to begin with. I recommend that you check out my mixing tutorials. I have videos on everything from gain staging, how to get the levels right, eq, the importance of mono, panning etc. :)

@FireWalkMusic3 жыл бұрын
You should never touch the master fader itself. That's not the proper way of leaving headroom. You need to ensure that all the individual mixer tracks are turned down enough so that you end up with a proper headroom on the master itself. When you have a few dB of headroom on the master itself, like -3 for example, then the mix will naturally be quieter. However, that volume will be louder again after mastering.

🔴 Can anyone please HELP me out, i am confused, can i make a Pre Mix Bus in the mixer and do limiting and compression and then send it to the master bus? Or should i not do compression n limiting at all in the mixing stage? Because i found out if i dont do limiting and compression, my track doesn't sound tight at all 😐
@FireWalkMusic4 жыл бұрын
Some people prefer to use a "premaster" bus like you describe. That kind of routing will often end up consuming a lot of CPU though, but if you have the computing power for it then there's no problem with that. If you intend to master the track yourself it doesn't really matter if you master it in the same session or export it and then master it in a different one. However, if you intend to send it to someone else to have it mastered for example, then you should disable all the mastering effects first, such as compression, limiting etc. A track will always sound quieter without any compression and such, and for humans louder always sounds better.
