Gotta love big piles of free wood! I do the same thing with all the tree debris from my neighborhood. Lots of ridiculously overgrown trees being taken down, because they are hazards to houses. Maintenance is more than happy to have us cut it up and take it- means THEY don't have to deal with it, lol win-win. All the red and silver maple I want! Spruce and honey locust, too. One of them even stops by and tells me when they've just dumped some good wood out back. I cut up a couple of nice spruce logs 2 weeks ago, intending to use em for kindling. The pieces were a tad knotty, and I figured they'd put up a decent fight when I went to split them. Nope. This stuff will be a joy to make kindling out of. Pretty wood, too, with nice reddish pink heartwood. LOTS of fatwood too!

Agree on that! And sounds like you got a nice contact for free wood! Got to love hard woods we don't get much of it around here, mostly soft woods and when hard woods do come available people want to keep it or sell for big dollars. Thanks for the insight on how you get your hand on your wood always interesting how everyone go's about gathering there wood. Cheers from Alberta 🇨🇦

To get more wood out of the bush quicker. What about cutting into 4' lengths and finishing them in the wood yard. Either with the processor or by hand at your convenience. Just a thought 🤔 👍✌️❤️🙏
@larrylefebvre22372 жыл бұрын
I agree, cut them up at 8 foot length so they fit in the truck and process them at home. Bring the trailer and get even more wood.
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Completely get what your saying and I've gone that way in the past but sometimes to keep the enjoyment of doing firewood I have to take it back to what got me hooked at the very beginning. Eventually once the roads get abit nicer out west I'll be taking out trailer so I can haul out 2 cords instead of the 3/4 cord👍👍

I'm surprised at the amount of wood left on site . I'm sure you're not the only one in the area that would buy a truck load or two. Seems like a lot of money left on the table.

Ya there alot of nice logs that end up in these piles and after a years time they get set fire 🔥. Lots of money on there end going up in smoke but I take full advantage of the wood 🪵

Another nice haul of firewood for the day. You might find it a little easier measuring your cut length, if you mark your saw bar at 16”. I mark my bar from the tip inward 16” using a red nail polish. It does wear off after a while, but I just keep applying it, saves me a lot of time. Just an idea to try.
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks 👍 and might have to give that a try. I've marked my bar in the past but only with a sharpie but always wore off after a few cuts. Nail polish can solve that, ill have to pick some up, wife would kill me if I used hers 😆👍👍

Hi Armand, how far west of Red Deer do you have to drive to find a burn pile like this? I live in Calgary and want to find a score for a friend who has a cabin at Gull lake. He always invites me and the fam up every year so I thought I would get him a load of firewood as a thank you. Stay safe. Brian.
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Hey good day and best advice I can give so you don't get lost out there would be to get on the "trunk road" that go's from Calgary up to Jasper way. It you get onto it between Sundre and Rocky mountain house you'll find a few logging blocks full of burn piles. Just if the wood it all decked up next to the road way good chance there still working out there. But the burn piles are free to grab from. Hopefully that help you out cheers

Armands Highlife, do you have access to all those piles? If so that is awesome. Like how you handled thos logs down that slope, made it easier on you! Nice pick up load you got there out of the Bush!
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Hey Craig Wilson and yes I do! Everything is up for grabs once there finished on the blocks and wood is hauled out. But definitely a good amount left over. Also few years dealing with logs like this bit not always this smoothly 🙄 lol Hope all is well 👍 cheers

Any decent firewood in those slash piles? Then again, how hard do you want to work for free firewood? Those were my thoughts when I saw those big piles. Be nice if most of those piles don't go up in smoke.
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Hey good day and yes there tones of good firewood in these piles! Definitely have to work for it though.. and personally find it's a big waste of money setting fire to it all. Definitely could set aside and haul out for cash or even leave at side of road and sell to guys collecting wood. I'm not complaining tho👍👍

Why not put a winch on the front of the truck?????
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Mostly $$, I've had a few small winch systems but to pull over some of the terrain I kept burning them out. Eventually I want to get a profitable gas winch but they run around 2000$ for one and not feasible at the moment 👍👍
@davidmatznick7782 жыл бұрын
That wood is so straight to bad you could use your processor to split up
@jakebredthauer51002 жыл бұрын
If the dog can run that far maybe he could drag the logs over to the processor.
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Ya this wood would be awesome for the processor. Once roads get dryer and not so soft I'll be bring a trailer in and start hauling logs out for the range road unit at the wood yard! 👍👍
@jakebredthauer51002 жыл бұрын
@@armandshighlife maybe you could get it ready to go while the roads are bad and then move it when the roads are better. You have probably already thought of that but decided against it.
@armandshighlife2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jake Bredthauer definitely have thought about going that route. Only reason I don't do that is for the work it is to drag logs out section up and place near road way, all fine that way but with these blocks open to the public almost certain someone else is going to load up when I'm not out there, hence why I just take what I can haul that day, wood and gas theft get back out on these blocks
