We have three different ways of heating our house. Our primary source is our wood cook stove in our kitchen, but all of the wood for it has to be a maximum of 16 inches long. The ideal piece is about two or 3 inches across. Our second source is our fireplace which we found the best way to use it is to throw whole rounds in, it doesn’t really matter if they are dry or not. We want it to just smolder and let it burn for days. We have to throw a few small pieces in on the side, just to make sure the fire keeps going. Our third heat source is just a regular woodstove in her basement and as long as the wood is less than 2 feet long it really doesn’t matter how it split. We burn a little bit of everything in there. Probably 90% of the wood we burn is pine. We live in Virginia and have a lot of other hardwoods around but our property is 90% fine so if that’s what we have that’s what we burn. With a wood cook stove pine is really great because it makes a really hot fire, which is better for baking bread.
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 11 күн бұрын
Yup, pine makes a fast hot fire BUT your in your fireplace the wood should be dry...more heat from dry wood and less creosote build up that can cause a chimney fire.

I've been cutting, splitting, and burning wood for over 50 years and before that at my parents and grandparents homes. Over the years I've settled into cutting 2-3 years ahead and separate by species. I burn the wood required for whatever heat I need given the weather. These days I use a moisture meter to confirm it's ready to burn and prefer wood that's around 15% moisture content. Nothings free and with wood heat it's the time and work that pays for the heat. I don't think I'm a fanatic because I don't push my way of life on anyone else. I do it because I enjoy the heat and the love the whole process of making firewood.

been a short term (couple of years now) wood burner it's changed my life. i love collecting (free) wood and most of the time I'm on the lookout for it (particularly in summer, when most people have forgotten that winter is cold!) bought a small chainsaw with a friend and we've been fortunate these last couple of years to have found a source who was looking to clear his land (a bit) and has allowed us to cut and take wood he's had lying around for differing times... he has a couple of barns which are probably condemned (but still standing) and my friend and I are treading water waiting for him to give us the go ahead. when (or perhaps I should say IF) we get the go ahead we'll be swimming in wood for many years to come. i guess I should say we DONT burn treated wood. We've also had plenty of tree wood come our way and I love chopping it up, I'm around your age Chris and, like you, I feel processing wood is great exercise and being outside, as long as you're busy in winter, is the best place to be. fanatic? no. convert? definitely and for the better as far as my life is concerned. all my best.

I spit my firewood to a variety of size. I like having the bigger wood for my stove to hold the fire longer time. The smaller splits burn away faster due to more surface area to burn. The initial chunk of wood has a certain amount of BTU's in it. The smaller splits do burn hotter due to this. Just like life, variety is the key!

You earn every penny when you sell it. After 50 years of experience in firewood use, processing, and several years of selling. It's all great 👍 I heat with it , and my wood is dry, and I have 5 years worth 😊 I'm 73, and have never been a fanatic, I prefer Ash, oak, hickory, beech and cherry, but have used just about anything and everything that was free. Went back to watch a couple of your old videos. My guess as to why you moved to the new woodyard was space. But the old woodyard was rather large. Question - why did you relocate?

A fellow firewood provider here, just had to bring back a load of firewood because the customer refused it saying prices to large. Today’s modern stoves being sold call for a smaller split piece of wood. They restrict oxygen, and reburn the gases etc and the size of wood don’t seem to have any influence. All of that to say that more often than not now I see customers wanting wood split down to 4 inch diameter approx

Didn’t somebody once say “you can please some of the people some of the time, but you cannot please all of the people all of the time” and this sounds like your situation with some of your viewers having different opinions on wood size etc. etc. Frank Sinatra said he would do it “My Way” so I guess everyone else can hit the “highway.” Glad to see you feeding all the cats. 😊

Good clean hard wood. 🪵 16" my preferred length. And I split and stack a mix of sizes. It's so much easier to start a fire from scratch with very small kindling, and pack a stove for the "night burn" with larger pieces. And each morning the process repeats with hot coals. Clean dry hardwood, 16" lengths and a vary of sizes!

In my narrow-minded pea brain wood has X number of BTUs per pound so 5- 6lb pieces should have the same btus as one 30lb piece, if the smaller splits are burning to fast perhaps you are giving the fire more oxygen than is required given the larger surface area of the smaller splits being better able to utilize the overabundance of oxygen. if stove/furnace is burning to quick tighten the air supply down more.

This comment is for folks who don't know my area (Georgia) and the firewood market here. You have people, like me who have brick fireplaces that can handle most any size firewood. But the are people who have small metal fireplaces which can only handle wood that are max 16-18 inches. I believe Chris has a customer base of these folks. They need small easy to handle firewood.

"If its not illegal i dont discriminate about money". i can even tolerate untolerable people just a little if they have the money. My views about wood is...if it burns its good wood and sometimes you need fancy wood and sometimes it just needs to burn and most of the time sold firewood is the best.

IMO if it doesnt directly affect you or your family there is nothing really worth getting all bent out of shape. For firewood I burn all types and sizes as long as its dry. I use the less than ideal wood like poplar and pine when its warmer to save my maple, ash, oak, and hickory.
