Just a couple tips from an retired truck driver. When I first started an old driver told me to never pull into a place thatyou will have to back out of. If you backed into your barn at night you can just pull out in the morning. Second, it is illegal to shift gears while on a railroad track and also unsafe for you. You are doing a great job!

Plan your shifts around curves not in the middle of them, especially when loaded. When you're stopped planning on turning, as you are moving straight forward grab a couple gears. Complete the turn and start grabbing gears again as your truck and trailer is straightening up. When you shift in the middle of the turn your tires are scuffing the road and it will feel like your truck wants to go backwards when in-between gears. 50 years of driving and I still grind a gear every once in a while.😉

Love this video. Love your attitude and personality. From my experience, just 2 items. Unplug the heater cord before you start the truck. When the engine is running and still plugged in, air bubbles in the moving coolant can contact your heater element. This can cause hot spots on your heater element leading to its failure. Also be careful using the "trolley brake" on the steering column. This brake will not hold if there is an air leak in the system. You did not leave the cab totally to get your scale ticket, but this could lead to trouble. The safe way is to apply the yellow brake button on the dash. This is a spring applied air released brake and is pretty much foolproof as long as your foundation brakes are in good working order. I want you to stay safe.

While watching this current one, we noticed something that was a little concerning when you had your hands on each side of the center bar of the steering wheel you had your thumbs around the bar. We rode with a log truck driver years ago and he said when you're driving, never wrap your thumbs around the steering wheel(even driving a car),because if you have a flat or hit a pothole, it will break your thumbs. He also taught us how to go smoothly over railroad tracks in a truck or even a car. He said to put your foot on the brake, while excelerating at the same time(basically power braking), it really works. Please give Pepper a hug from us! Happy Farming!❤️🌽❤️

Re: moving the hood. You don't need additional weight, just a bit of leverage. You have all you need around you to make a little bracket/fixture on the lower part of the front of the hood to hook something like a long piece of scaffold tube into it so that you can pull it over with the aid of a long lever. The easiest way to get this done would be to suggest it as a challenge to your nearest and dearest boys...
@b61mack5622 сағат бұрын
Laura, you are by far the first farmer I have seen with perfectly manicured nails.😂 But as a truck driver two things. 1. You can leave your Jake brake on, once you step on the gas pedal or clutch it will disengage automatically. 2. Never use your trolley brake ( read the writing on top of the handle) to hold the vehicle when you get out of that seat. Just pull your tractor brakes ( yellow one ) or one day you'll find yourself chasing your truck and trailer down a road. Just saying
@hughcrandall25418 сағат бұрын
Leaving the Jake on when you float the gears won't work. you'll kill the engine. You need to double clutch to leave the Jake on. Off the throttle energizes the Jake, clutching de-energizes the brake.
@b61mack5617 сағат бұрын
@hughcrandall254 Well if her clutch has the proper free play when she is floating gears, She can just press the clutch pedal a little, taking up some of the free play and activating the switch which will shut off the jake brake. I've done it many times.

@@b61mack56 leaving Jake on on slippery roads is not recommended. You can turn on the cruise control and it will set Jake to only deploy after brake depression. Sure happy to see another video of what's currently going on at your farm that is so much like what is going for us farmers here in northeast Missouri. I wondered last fall where you taking/storing your grain; and the last bin site I remember in your videos was at your dad's. I've got to tell you, like in your last post, and especially this one, that I really like to see the surrounding, Nebraska countryside near your farm and around Aurora. Your dirt is better than ours; and to me, the flat countryside where you live and farm is some of the best looking scenery on earth. I'm saying this after having driven a semi-truck over-the-road all over the United States; and after traveling overseas in the US Army. I have mentioned to you before that I have delivered to Iams many times (sometimes once or twice a week) on the west side of Aurora; and I drove all over Hamilton and Adams counties when I went to the "Red Power Roundup" in Grand Island in 2023. I have made a gazillion trips myself pulling a hopper bottom to haul mostly corn (some soybeans) from the farm to the nearby, Mississippi River terminals along with the ethanol plant on US36 east of Macon, MO. Some of my hopper-bottom trips hauling corn involved crossing the Mississippi River at Canton, MO on a ferry boat to deliver to Meyer, Illinois. Fully loaded with two semi's (naturally, us farmers were overloaded grossing 85,000-90,000 lbs.) the ferry really rocked around a lot with the bow coming out of the water as we drove on to the deck. Well, again, given a chance, I could just talk and talk visiting with you, and Grant, in person; and I'm sure you and Grant have the same passion for farming as I do.

Laura, take it from a fellow Nebraskan, & someone who's been driving a truck OTR for over 32 years! You'll be happier with that cheap auction truck, & you'll save ALOT of money! You don't drive it far enough to justify spending the money to buy the big fancy truck! You did great, but just a few little tips. Don't use the jakes on gravel roads, & your shifting is ok. Try lugging the engine down to about 1200 rpm. I think you have the old style Detroit, the sweet spots for shifting the old style Detroit diesels for best performance & best fuel mileage is 1200 to 1600 rpm. In other words lug the engine down to 1200 & shift upshift around 1600. Try progressive shifting when you can, especially empty! Also, never shift when crossing tracks. Not criticizing, you're doing well. Just a few pointers from an old trucker that's been driving a truck longer than you've been alive!!😂😂
@TL-zh9qq21 сағат бұрын
You would have a lot less trouble shifting if you would just use your clutch, that's why they put one on a truck, if used properly you will never grind gears and it would allow you to shift faster and more smoothly.

I used to drive commercial trucks one summer, and I had to learn speed shifting - that's what the old hat called it - because the clutch adjustment went way out of whack on a trip and we couldn't figure out how to fix it. At certain speeds, both sides of the transmission are spinning close enough to the same speed where you can shift without the clutch and just a minor change in engine speed with the throttle. I got good at it very quickly because I needed to.

Just stumbled across your vidoes. Really nice to see younger people taking this very tough, time consuming, 100% dedication job on. I was born and raised in a small farming town just north of you a couple hours in Husker Nation. I did relocate to Phoenix in 1989 for my job as an aircraft mechanic though. I've since retired in 2021 and we moved back here again to enjoy our lives again. I honestly love being around home and family again too. Wanted to say keep up the great work you all are doing and best of luck to you guys.

If I read the corn price graphs correctly, by storing the corn for three months, you picked up an additional $800 per truckload. Or I'm totally doing the math wrong. And the cost of storing and the additional load/unload operations are a factor. Would love to see a video where you talk about the business side and the dice rolling you have to do.

It's great that Laura's film connects people from different parts of the world, and different professions. I'm from Poland. I work with excavators. Looking at the price of fuel in the US, I thought we had the most expensive fuel in the world. Here in Poland, for that amount of fuel, I would pay $620. I also checked the price of corn here today, for 1000 kg (2220 lb) the purchasers pay 850 PLN (212 $) you have to convert to your units, we have a different system of measures and weights... or you have a different one :D stay warm :D let me know how it looks for you.

You really are wonderwoman Try anything, always upbeat, never cross. In UK you have to be over 25 pass a very stringent heavy goods vehicle licence test costing thousands and the limit for artics is 40ft long and 44 ton gross vehicle weight . Just very frequently change the engine oil with best quality oil on that Peterbilt and it will keep going - but that is the most important thing you can do . Never tire of watching you .

The other person was right you do not need low gear when you're loaded that's more for out in the field. First gear on the gravel or the pavement is fine when you're loaded second or third empty should pull that just fine. And remember don't shift going through corners Don't shift going over train tracks. Also that big black truck is gorgeous but the bigger the truck the less the payload the lighter the smaller the truck the more payload the light or the smaller the truck the cheaper what you need is horsepower if you ran over the road big black would be great working on the farm doesn't matter the color light and simple will do the job and it pays better
