I'd agree, Larch/Tamarack burns great. I'm also a fan of Paper or White Birch. Standard Poplar or Ash is good for a backyard fire since it doesn't seem to spark much but it burns pretty quick. I aim for Larch myself

Might want to be careful and check to be sure that is stuff you can legally take. The Forest Service in our area won't let anyone take firewood off an active timber sale unit on a firewood tag. The wrong circumstances can get you charged with theft. And I've personally had firewood cutters cut out of valuable decks that they assumed were junk.....which actually IS theft.

I get it now. Out of necessity its prudent to have a saw with you, as the roads you travel may be blocked by a blow down. Maybe it's time to carry 1gal of premix and 1qt of bar oil because you never know if you'll come across some wood that wants to go in the bed of your truck.

@@mountainlifewithdavidkelsie I had a similar opportunity at a logging site just down the road from me. They had a big old deck of Tamarack logs that the foreman said I could help myself to as he had no market for it. 6-10" diameter logs up to 30' long That I could drive up to. Rather than buck it up, I cut 9 foot poles and flopped 8 or 10 at a time in my F-250. With the quick turn around time I had my firewood for years!
