@@nedkelly8633 the mauser was probably a more accurate rifle, better made generally, more solid action i guess - it's the basis for basically every bolt action rifle of the last however long for a reason, rimless ammo which is more of an issue back then than now. that said, the lee-enfield is probably the better *combat* rifle, with its higher rate of fire (action is way faster, and the short throw means you don't have to move your head out of the way and re-establish sight picture), higher ammo count, easier to clean and more resistant to dirt due to the rear locking lugs. a mauser or derivative is an incredibly nice rifle, but there's that old joke about in WWI the germans brought a hunting rifle, the americans brought a target rifle, the british brought a combat rifle, and the russians brought a rifle

These were actually used by Afghan mujahideen against Russians in the early 1980s. It became a point of criticism against muj “supporters” as they were perceived as being arcane “WW1 era” weapons. Some CIA people thought they were a superior weapon to the alternatives because they were inexpensive, very rugged, reliable, accurate and ammunition was easy to procure.

I was surprised to read this myself. Forgot his name. In most reporting from the period from books like “Charlie Wilson’s War” or “The Looming Tower”, reporting on the use of Enfields is generally used emphasize how “outgunned” the Mujahideen were in the early 80s. Just because us Brits have used something for 50 years, doesn't mean its good.. what about the L85?? Even if it is an A3 variant going into an A4, its a hunk of shite and needs replacing. The Royal Marines have got their shit together by phasing them out and replacing them with the L119A2's from Colt Canada, excellent rifles and much, much better than your standard M4 used by the US and also the L85's still in use by us lol.

@@anemoia2661 From someone that's shot numerous WW1 and 2 era rifles.. And does shoot them most days of the week. The Enfield is superior to most in terms of action smoothness, trigger, capacity, etc. The only downsides I can think of for the No 1 Mk 3 is that the wood cracks at stress points if disassembled/reassembled in the wrong order and that the bolts are finicky to disassemble. Shooting them is a breeze.

Guys did the same thing in Vietnam with their M16s, the spring in the magazine would become too faulty if there was too much pressure on it, plus the humility of the jungle which made it worse. So American soldiers/marines would load only up to 18 rounds in the magazine which was designed to hold 20.

I've shot Lee Enfields in competition. The ones that I used had an awesome vernier sight that could be set up for dead accuracy. That .303 round is a big one by modern military standards and they'll wreck your shoulder if you're not careful. 90 lb. weaklings get thrown back ass-over-tea-kettle if their not careful. In the Canadian Forces, it was replaced around 1960 by the semi-automatic FN-C1 and automatic FN-C2 after being in use from WWi, when it replaced the Ross Rifle after the Second Battle of Ypres. The Brits used a similar FN variant called the SLR.

It’s a lot better to use blanks and give some idea of what it’s like to fire these things. Mine was made and issued to the frontline in 1916. Still works like a dream and I take good care of it. Indeed. I lost family on the Axis side of things. On both sides actually. All these Americans that trumpet how they won the war single handed-ly is absolute crap. The war in Europe had been raging. They point at the Sherman *Theres the tank that won the war* If anything the Axis just lost.. Sure the Americans won in the pacific I will give them that. The British didnt put too much effort into defending New Zealand and Australia. Both sides won and lost many battles and millions of men. It was awful there's no disputing that. I just don't like the way people trumpet on.

The magazine is 10 round, loaded from 2 Five round Charger clips. That particular rifle being a 1914 SMLE No1 rifle does have the Volley sights and magazine cutoff. The action if properly handled is very fast. The British Army pre war had a standard of 30 aimed rounds a minute in one minute, known as the Mad Minute, and yes it is possibly with practice.
