Firing up Schumacher's '93 Benetton F1 car in the back garden. Our latest Car Cave owner, Steve, chooses to not have a vast vehicle collection. In fact it isn't a collection at all, it's a pair of sheds that he built himself (because he's a builder by trade) to house a pair of fully functioning F1 Benetton Ford B193s, along with a classic Fiat 500 and a trio of 1970s Japanese motorbikes.
The truth is, Steve (who is a builder by trade) didn’t want the 1993 Benettons (which used to be Michael Schumacher's) as ornaments, and given most historic F1 cars do not run - many don't even have engines - that’s quite a feat in itself. Steve wanted to drive his race cars and share the experience with others. Gawd bless you, Steve.

Schumacher made his debut for Jordan Ford at Spa in 1991, then straight after was poached by Flavio Briatorie and Benetton. His first Grand Prix Victory came at the 1992 Belgium Grand Prix in the Benetton B192.

Can you still call there and buy spare parts? Or are there any manuals on how to setup or repair such an engine?

@@daybyter I'm not sure if you can by parts for the HB engine. The company I worked for before cosworth. Was called Langford & peck. But now its just called Lanford performance. In Wellingborough Northants. They were building the HB for historic racing so they may well have parts still. Dick Langford is the chap that you would need to talk to. Hope that helps. I'm afraid I don't have the number. But you should be able to go on line and find them..the address .is Findon Road industrial estate Wellingborough. Kind Regards Bob Rose.

I went to donington park years ago and this car was doing some demonstration laps at a ferrari day strangely and we missed it because of a flat tyre on our car. My son the only 5 years old cried all day because he missed seeing Michael's F1 car, I would give anything to be able to take him and show him this car just to see his face light up🙏. Yet again the late brake show smashed any other channel out of the park 👏😉👍

It's tremendously interesting to hear a 1993 car is consider one of the last Grand Prix cars to be simple enough to be run by a private owner, whereas us F1 fans often regard this cars as overly complex compared to younger cars!

l was lucky enough in 1992 to be shown the 1992 Benetton car, in person, by Michael Schumacher himself! He was very patient explaining the various features of the car to me with his broken English and my rudimentary German. What an absolutely lovely person!

Schumacher did his first and only race with Jordan in 1991 in the Belgian GP. His first win was the 1992 Belgian GP. He won that race in the B192.

Great era for F1. Schumacher was on another planet. I was at Spa for his first F1 drive. And was back at Spa for his first win. I also watched him race the Mercedes in the endurance races. One wet Le Mans every time he came out of the car the lap times just shot up. How many hours he finished up driving I don't remember but just watching you knew he was in the car. So much quicker. A friend of mine was a car designer working for Tom Walkinshaw. He was telling me he was taken on some laps around I think Silverstone in some saloon car. First with Brundle who he said was pushing on a bit and trying to impress. Then with Schumacher which he described as a fast Sunday drive. Schumacher was actually faster just no effort. There have been a lot of F1 drivers. But only a handful of truly gifted. Schumacher is one of the best ever. Maybe even the best.

Senna was by a country mile the best,Cheated by Prost for his first formula one win ,by Prost who was screaming for the race to be stopped as it was raining and senna was catching him rather quickly, he got his revenge further on in his career,people saw his potential in that race,And the race was on to secure his services. Senna hands down was the man .

You do realise that pieces of these cars are worth millions? The Schumacher car's engine alone would be worth at least £10mil due to it being a 1-of-1 masterpiece of bleeding edge technology. If Steve has one of these cars at 100%, then it's practically priceless.

That era, '91 to '97, to me is just the pinnacle of F1. I became an ardent Schumi then. Just seeing and hearing those cars gave me goosebumps and took me back to my early 20s, glued to the TV every fortnight. Thx Jonny, U R a legend. BTW the Bennetons in that colour scheme were the argubaly the best looking F1 cars of the time, perhaps ever.

Schumachers first win was 92 at Spa. He debuted at Spa for Jordan in 91 and then moved to Benetton for the next race.

Schumachers first F1 Season was 91 ( not 90 ) He replaced Bertrand Gachot at Jordan for the Belgium Grand Prix at Spa. Gachot was handed a 2 month jail sentence after a road-rage incident with a London Cabbie. Schumacher qualified 7th for his first Grand Prixbut unfortunatly he fried the clutch on the start and his race lasted 2 corners. After that he was poached by Benetton and the rest is history.

First time I have seen the 193B since 2005 when Steve took me to see it. I didn't know that he had a second 193B and that it had the only engine of its kind in the world. Steve would remember me (Les) as he is a builder since leaving British Telecom in the mid 1980's, and I used to make regular deliveries to him until I had a stroke in 2007.

Another great episode. Looking back at the Benetton F1 Wiki page, and seeing who worked for them. It's almost like the Who's Who of F1. They also had some great drivers. Awesome to see it running and being driven by the owner. Kudos to Steve and all the owners who get their cars out and to historic meetings. Too many classic race cars are locked away and never seen or heard! I am currently restoring a 1979 Cheetah Mk6 historic Australian Formula 2 car with plans to enter historic events. As also green behind the ears and with the speed differential in Group R (it includes Formula Holden's, F3000's and one owner has 2 1984 Ferrari F1 cars!) I have just bought a logbooked historic Formula Vee to get on the track now.

Brings back some memories. I got two tours of the Benetton factories as a kid, first the Witney facility where i got to sit in Piquet's car. That was 1990 i think. Then again late in 1995 at the Enstone factory, just after Schumacher quit. Didn't get to sit in the car that time, but i did get to appreciate how clean and well organised the factory was.

This is the era when I first began watching every single race... late 80's and into this car's era early 90's. Oftentimes it was early Sunday morning for the European events, .. I'm guessing Speedvision Cable channel in the US. Back then pre-internet ... I would read Speed Sport News ... Chris Econamaki's superb weekly racing newspaper, watched every IndyCar race, every F1 race, and most every Nascar race. Late 80's early 90's, open wheel was at its absolute peak. F1, IndyCar, and USAC open wheel, were at the height of success. Nascar was just then exploding in growth. F1 was in a technological explosion, mated with the best powerplants, light-weight era, add the active suspension, programmed shift points, traction control... Schumi, Prost, Senna, Mansell, Hakkinen... Simultaneously... IndyCar had Michael and Mario Andretti, Rick Mears, Foyt, Unser Sr, Unser Jr, Fittipaldi, Luyendyk, Bobby Rahal, Paul Tracy... Nascar had Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, Mark Martin, Bill Elliott, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, Darrell Waltrip, etc... Wow, I'd never realized the magnitude across all series.
