Rice is an obvious candidate for the previous strong, traditional Republican party that was serious and had more respect for truth and for difference. That party no longer exists, and was killed by thousands of acts of compromise, cowardice , and surrender on the part of people I used to respect. Is there a new wave of Republicans out there somewhere who could reconstitute and develop a party that could nominate someone like Rice?
@coryreedrobbins3 ай бұрын
The Republican Party, as it once was, is dead. It’s been overtaken by the Trump cult, locking the party into a cycle of extremism. Even if Trump loses or goes to prison, figures like Don Jr. will still control the narrative, pushing it further into dysfunction. Gerrymandering and the rise of fringe elements in Congress will keep the party from evolving. Until major reforms-like overturning Citizens United-are made, the GOP will remain a shadow of its former self, trapped in ignorance and extremism. @@andykoehl3776

She was clear about a couple of things: agreement with the Biden administration’s support of Ukraine; does not agree with Trump’s isolationist perspective, or his plan to pull the US out of NATO. As a long term viewer of the program, Connie Rice is as close to an “old school” Buckley Firing Line guest as you will probably ever have on your new age Hoover Firing Line. American world leadership, like democracy itself, isn’t always easy or stress free, but the right path forward is a balance between clear short term objectives and some otherwise obscure long term goals. Yes, she evaded any directly political questions because she didn’t want any. OK, I understand why. And, in principle, she is talking about American foreign policy, which should not go through a politicized and polarized transfiguration every time a new president is sworn into office. But that is where we are at. So many of her friends and colleagues have spoken out against the former president and what he will do if he returns to power. It does not serve the country or its interests to give the an excellent analysis of what needs to be considered in the long term and not say what needs to be done this November. Score her down for her bad decisions and way up for most of her diplomatic theory. Net score just a bit above zero.

Even if she did theoretically accept such a post, her intelligence would upstate anything said or done by Harris , so no such cabinet offer is likely forthcoming. I happen, on a separate note, to disagree both with the intervention in Iraq and I believe that current war in Ukraine need not have begun in the first place. It was the push by Biden , Harris, and others with economic and other interests to provoke Russia, among other things, with Ukraine's possible entry into NATO, and it has cost dearly both in funds and in lives. Now Europe and United States are locked in a war that must be won. At what cost? Nuclear war?

Even so, this interview and the one with Neil Gorsuch a few months ago consisted of strictly softball questions. How could Margaret Hoover have not asked Condi Rice about the election that's merely three weeks away? I would guess that PBS agreed in advance that certain questions would be off limits. I appreciate Margaret Hoover's ability to ask tough questions in a non-confrontational way, but that version of her did not show up to this interview.

Globalization, shaped by the principles of “survival of the fittest” under social Darwinism, has undeniably brought significant economic benefits to Western nations, particularly the United States. However, these benefits have disproportionately favored the social elites, while the majority of the population is left with mere remnants-“crumbs of the cake.” This dynamic mirrors a predatory hierarchy, where the elites, much like lions and tigers, consume the best portions, leaving the broader public to scramble like vultures for what remains. While globalization may foster economic growth, it has also exacerbated inequality, restricting access to the full benefits of this system for the wider population. Beyond the complexities of the “religionization” of communism and the politicization of Islam, one of the most pressing challenges for the United States today is the October 7 terrorist attacks, deeply rooted in the historical injustice of the 1948 Nakba, which displaced Palestinians and sowed the seeds of long-standing grievances in the region. This unresolved injustice has fueled a resurgence of aggressive Zionism, and vice versa, heightening tensions and instability across the Middle East. Failing to address this historical context perpetuates conflict, making it a critical element of regional volatility and a central challenge for U.S. foreign policy. In the long term, the West-led by the United States-can foster meaningful change in totalitarian societies by leveraging the influence of expatriates, particularly Chinese individuals living abroad, for example, to subtly impact those within mainland China. Through cultural exchange, the spread of diverse information, and the demonstration of alternative governance models and lifestyles, expatriates can help shift perspectives within authoritarian societies. A strategic focus on advancing gender equality in conservative communities could also serve as a catalyst for broader democratic reforms, particularly among Western Muslims. Since parents are the first role models for children, empowering women by abolishing restrictive practices such as wearing headscarves and niqabs-A remnant of extreme patriarchal values-would symbolize not only women’s freedoms but the rights of all individuals in these societies. This push for personal freedom could pave the way for deeper, more profound democratic changes. Shifting attitudes toward gender equality can serve as a critical first step in reshaping societal norms. As Western Muslim women assert their right to choose their attire, this could inspire a broader questioning of authoritarian religious and political controls. This ripple effect could extend to regions like Iran and other parts of the Islamic world, where many, particularly women, yearn for greater freedom and autonomy. Gender equality could thus become a powerful symbol in the struggle for human rights and democracy, gradually transforming these societies both culturally and politically. By promoting these shifts gradually and through culturally sensitive engagement-augmented by advancements in AI and information technologies-the West could play a pivotal role in fostering a desire for freedom and democracy in totalitarian regimes. If sustained, this approach could lead to lasting transformations in both political systems and societal values across the globe.
