I have the same generator from Costo but just the dual version. Gas and propane. I paid $499 on sale at costco. I have had to use it this past summer two times. Once for a few hours and the other time for 40 straight hours. I have a 100lb propane take so that makes it very easy. I don't access to natural gas so that would not be something I need. So far it has run flawlessly. When I first got it I added the oil ran it for an hour and changed the oil. Second time I ran for two hours on propane and again changed the oil, this time I put on a small load. After the 40 hours of use I again changed the oil. I did have some trouble starting it the last time on propane. I took 3-4 tries to kick over. I am more than happy with the purchase. I also had a transfer switch installed next to my breaker. @@bobgieser2943 Raul did not say whether he was in Canada or the US. This generator is available at 2 Costcos near my house in Canada for $899 Canadian right now. The Canadian dollar is at about $0.80 USD so that would be about $720 USD. So if he is in Canada $899 CAD is about what you are going to pay but in real money (USD) it is not that far off. I really want one of these Firmans for the house, but since I already have a 2900 watt Yamaha with an American Carburetor tri-fuel conversion on it my wife is not so keen. And let me tell you straight up the Yamaha was way more than $899 Canadian! And only 2900 watts instead of the 5500 watts the Firman will make on natural gas. The Yamaha is an inverter generator, which is nice, but you can't use eco mode on gas or propane. I bought the Yamaha originally for camping because it is an inverter and much quieter than the Firman (as well as more portable), but for home use the Firman seems like an outstanding value. The Firman is not an inverter generator, but if noise and fuel economy aren't your number 1 and 2 concerns then an inverter doesn't really give much value. For home backup this model running on natural gas or propane seems like a great and cost effective solution.

This is my 2 nd tri fuel generator. I have a plug outside by the generator, that goes to the fuse box in my basement. It is hooked to a natural gas line that used to be for a pool heater (That I don't need anymore) The natural gas line fitting that came straight out of the generator I looked and found a 3/8 swivel fitting 90 degrees , now it goes down instead of straight out. In less than 5 minutes from the time the lights go out I can have them back on. (very easy) I have the same generator as that one. I have an 1850 sq. foot and the basement is the same size house . It runs pretty much everything in the house . I had a new 3 ton AC unit installed in July, (the old one was very old and it wouldn't run it) with a hard start kit, now it works too . You never have everything in your house on at the same time. I have lights , plugs. heat, in every room. It all works. I use a generator interlock switch on the fuse box. You turn off the main fuse, then turn on the generator circuit breaker and you have power in the house. I live in Michigan, we lose power here on a regular basis. You will love it.

I just purchased one and I'm very impressed so far. It will hook up to the little receptacle I had an electrician install with a cut over switch, so it will power my panel. A little warning to everyone, these generators are not inverter type generators so I'm concerned about their higher than normal THD for some devices. Would be interested to know other people's experiences. You CAN clean up the power (lower the THD) with a double conversion UPS, but they cost as much as the generator! Nonetheless, you're still way ahead as the total cost is FAR less than a whole house generator.

That's a very nice generator... and thank you for the video. I am impressed with that unit though... I, myself, do not have natural gas at my home so i run my units on propane... good luck with it... and, again, thank you ...

Probe, glad you mentioned the load test. After breaking it in I decided to put a lid on it using some house appliances. I plugged in a fridge, a separate standing freezer, a large stran of outdoor lights, a fan, and all was good. Lastly, I decided to connect a hair dryer and once I ran it, the generator could not keep up and shut down. After using a wattage calculator, it seems once I got to 4000 running watts, it gave up and shut down. I am guessing I need better NG flow. Not an expense I was expecting.
@probeteam99364 жыл бұрын
@@toror212000 see that's the issue with the NG generators. And when you contact the company they usually cant tell you how much pressure you actually need. With propane I think its between 9 and 11 inches ... but I have no idea how much NG you would need. I've seen videos where people use larger and more expensive NG supply lines... sometimes they work, sometimes the do not. I've see where people had to have their meters changed ... to increase service... but I've also see where people changed their Meters and the gas main didnt even have enough pressure to supply the load. If your able to get the exact amount needed from the company... a plumber can test your supply... also... remember... if you have an 8000 watt generator that's only 4000 a leg... you gotta split and balance the load ... if you put 5000 on one leg the generator will not be able to handle it... good luck and again... thanks for the video... it was very good...

PT, Thanks for that info. I just got this one as well and likely need to do the same test. I have a split directly off of my meter but 8 haven’t tried it under load. That being said I have a couple of propane tanks and can get another 30 or 40 pound tank (for some reason Firman says only use 20 or 30 lb tanks). Worst case it’s still better than using gas and gunking up the carb.
@probeteam99364 жыл бұрын
@@jaorme you can use ANY size propane tank you like... you just ha e to ha e it regulated properly. If you have an extremely large propane tank your supplier can help you with that. I have a 100 gallon (420 pound) tank and twenty 20 pound tanks... when I go to the landfill... when nobody is looking... I toss 5 or so tanks in my truck that people have thrown away and exchange them... or I buy them cheap on the internet. A 7000 watt generator will use about 3/4 of a gallon per hour under normal use. With the dial on off there is no smell so I'm thinking pressure to the connectors and line are in tact. I reached out to customer support and might call to see what they say tomorrow too.

Never tested the pressure to be honest. Just read that the shorter the hose connected to the gas line, the better pressure. After I switched, it didn’t lag after testing.

Did you move the choke back and forth while pressing the start button? Try that.
@wooddawg48683 жыл бұрын
If your using regular gas you have to choke it to start, then pit choke half way for a moment or to then open choke all the way. On propane the choke should be wide open to start, most propane generators have a gas prime button.

I've never owned a generator but am looking at buying this one. How long have you ever let them sit without starting it up?
@toror2120003 жыл бұрын
Since this one comes with a battery to use electric start. You would want to have a trickle charger on it to keep the battery conditioned. These things can sit for a long time without a start as long as you take care of them after use. Ex: flushing out or conditioning the gasoline, cleaning the carb, etc. since I am using Natural Gas feature, it should be less maintenance........fingers crossed. Either way. I would still start it every few months to make sure.
@ab_ab_c3 жыл бұрын
@@toror212000 Yeah. Keep a 13.2 vdc trickle charger on the battery. You should also run the engine once a yr for 30 minutes (if you run only natural gas--more frequently if you use petrol) to ensure it is working properly. I also would not keep any gasoline in the system until you need it. Gasoline gums up over time--even when you use fuel stabilizer in it.

@PeterLawton Жыл бұрын
240 VAC. Yes, noisy. It's big.
@ab_ab_c3 жыл бұрын
Smart choice! It won't provide as much power as a whole home standby generator, but it will definitely get you through a power outage! You can do your own wiring to your power panel, you just have to remember to switch off your main power switch to isolate your home from the public grid before you power up your generator to provide power to your whole house. Just looked at the user manual. It uses 101 cubic feet of natural gas at 100% load--which only gives you 5.5 kW on natural gas. That means the energy efficiency of that generator is ~18%--which is rather poor. Here's the math: 101 ft³ * 1037 BTUs/ft³ = 104737 BTU/h (this is the energy content in BTU/s of the natural gas burned) 104737 BTU/h * kWh/3412 Btus/h = ~30.7 kWh (this is the energy content in kWhs of the natural gas burned) 5.5 kWh / 30.7 kWh = ~0.179 (this means the generator is ~18% efficient at converting natural gas to electricity--which isn't that good. A good diesel genset has an efficiency of 40% to 50%).

I’m having trouble with mine it won’t stay on with the natural gas. Any idea what could be wrong? I’m using a 1/2 inch hose with quick disconnect.
@toror2120004 жыл бұрын
Use plumbing tape around the area you screw the line into. Then I would spray area with soapy water to see you you have a leak. Obviously you would smell it as well. Also, I did move from choke to run while I was pressing the start button. Give that a shot a couple times.
@CardiffGiant4 жыл бұрын
Raul Toro if you’re using a direct flared fitting you actually don’t want to use gas tape. just tighten by hand and give it a 1/4 with a wrench. using gas tape could actually be causing the leak. if your having to reduce or expand the size of the fitting then tape is appropriate but for a regular flared quick connect hose do not use any gas tape.
